Hi, this is a great idea! I'm Ann and I work in the National Consumer Agency. Carrigman, you're not the oldest around here. I figure we're around the same age. I got a D30 last summer and know almost nothing about photography but have bought photography books for years. Love digital because I can make loads of mistakes and wipe them all out. Live in Ranelagh.

Ok I have been poring over everyone elses replies for last couple of days. Really interesting thread btw and what is it with IT and photography???
About me, 25 year old, originally from Tipp now living in Dublin. Doing a Masters in International Journalism in DIT. Only seriously into photography for just over a year, got my first DSLR back in Sept. Have been lucky enough to be getting a lot of opportunities photography wise in the last number of months so trying my hand at sports photography and hopefully more portrait/fashion work. Will be shooting a lot of different areas for an upcoming end of year magazine/journal as part of our course so that should keep me busy and motivated. I work part time as sports reporter and some radio work
In a nutshell thats the lot

As regards posting a photo, I did a crazy self portrait which was an absolute waste of a bank holiday Monday but why not.. If you are my friend on flickr you can take a look.. Didnt make it available to everyone as its a bit too silly! lol

I'm gerky I've always enjoyed taking photos, I have an on and off switch when it comes to photography I could go mad taking pics for a month and the go a month without taking one.
I've been told I'm actually an interesting fella not that you'd know from my posts on boards:) I'm rather private with my info on boards (cause I'm secretly really famous) :p ah no I'm just a private person so ye can pm me for more info if ya want.

    Good thread by the way.

I don't think it is IT and photography really - more likely IT and boards.ie related (people who talk on online forums probably have a good grasp of the internet and are more involved in the computer side of things).

If you go to a photography club I'm sure you'll find a wide range of people interested in photography.

    that's just here though.
I went to a couple of meetings of the PhotoSoc in UCC this year, and it was 90% women, most of those were foreign students using the soc to see more of Ireland. I think photography has universal appeal.

Uh, yeah, actually thinking about it a bit more, I think Thirdfox has hit the nail on the head. Self-selecting group and all that. Being amazed that there's a high proportion of IT heads is like being astonished that , coincidentally, we all have boards.ie accounts !

Not surprising really, they're both pretty solitary pursuits. A bit like ...

    Actually, I won't go there ...

Hi I'm James, originally from Mayo now living in Kildare and guess what I work in IT too!

I've always been interested in photography but really only got the hang of it when I got my first DSLR a year and a half ago. Turned it off "Auto" soon after and never looked back since :).
I've a Sony Alpha 100 and so far I believe I'm the only one on boards with a Sony :)

I like the outdoors and mainly take photos of landscapes, often with water included. I really like waterfalls and enjoy treking about the place finding and capturing them.

I have found the advise from this forum excellent and I have attended some boards meets and I must say everyone is very friendly and really really helpful, thanks guys.

Anyone there working up the courage to attend a meet (I know what its like) go on take the chance, you won't regret it ;)

My flickr name is Jim_shoot, looking forward to meeting up again soon :)

    Hi All,

Paul here and I just finished my first photographic exhibit at Baldoyle Library on the northside. It went well. I have attended events and love where I live so got out and about and tried to capture some decent shots. The results were generally pretty good and when I dropped some off to get framed, the guy suggested that I start selling them as he got a lot of interest in what I had shot.

I have a site www.pauloshea.net which has some stuff on it. I don't have PayPal or anything set up yet, but am keen to sell some of my work. I put a lot of effort into getting good shots and those of Sunsets, Formula One, Landscapes, Moto GP, Road Racing have gotten some decent feedback.

The problem I have right now is I need to find a good repair place in Dublin that doesn't cost an arm and a leg. I got my camera back from a lend and it is not working as CF Unit needs to be replaced and I was quoted €250 which is too much. I could just buy a new one instead.

Any suggestions on repair places that might do it for less? I am willing to give it a shot rather than have Canon UK mess about for two weeks with it and I get a bill for €250!

Thanks and look forward to checking in with you all.

    Cheers, Paul

Hello, Louise here aka lanky_larry (long and boring story actually), 28 and born bred and buttered in Dublin. I have been working in a sausage factory for the last 10 years. I make sure the sausages are not too bendy **. Been into photography for about 5ish years, have had a digital SLR for about 2. Still finding my feet, at the moment I have been taking lots of landscape stuff but I'll shoot just about anything there is to shoot. I love to wander around the botanics but my macro shots leave a lot to be desired. Keeps me out of trouble so I can't complain.

Met some really great people through the meets, I'd encourage anyone out there who is nervous to bite the bullet and attend a meet. Everyone is lovely.

So then when is the next meet and that coffee plan sounds like a brill one too?

    ** I work in IT

From Clonmel, lived in Louth for 2.5 years and now back home for he last 6 months - working as a software developer in Limerick. Can't get over how many fellow IT nerds are here! More people call be beef in real life than by my real name, Cormac. :)

Well,Inibaz here.I'm currently a student in Limerick(the flickr name is a bit of a give away;)) I'm still a beginner,I got a 4mp P&S 3 years back for holidays and the like but only started using it properly 2 years back.I slowly outgrew it and went for a slightly better 7mp P&S.I've taken most of my shots with this but again I wanted a step up so I got a 400D in January.I've been messing around with it for the past 3 months and I'm loving it so far.

    Hi all,
I'm an engineering student from Dublin. Been reading the forum for a few months, but only started posting stuff recently. I've learnt so much reading the threads here. Only have a Fuji bridge camera, looking forward to getting a dslr as soon as I'm working after I graduate (when I'll probably have joined the rest of you in the IT industry :P ).

Hi. I'm Mark, or m_stan as I go by here. I don't do meets, do a lot of reading here, and some posting - all mainly because of lack of time due to a hectic job and a young family.

Have had a digital slr for around 18months now - Canon 400d. Before that is was all digital point and shoots for a few years for snaps. Started to pick up some more gear now and getting more and more into this craic. Also really getting into the photoshop side of things.

This place has been both a source of inspiration and a proven way to empty my wallet! I have far more gear now that I thought I'd ever acquire in a lifetime, even though it's pretty modest.

I like to shoot everything, and wanna learn more more more!

Thanks to all for helping inspire and encourage me, even though you probably didn't realise you were doing it ...

As with almost 90% of people lurking around here I'm also an IT nerd. Always loved photography. Currently own a Canon 30D but as I'm still a novice user it is getting used far to often in auto mode. Hope to go on one of the next photo meets and see how the professionals do it. ;)

    Ger.

Is that the Rory Williams who studied Economics in UCD in the late 80's? If so, we went to college together! Will you email me at admin@candidsoul.com please?

My past catches up with me. Email sent. I am now wondering who you are !

    EDIT

I'm Ian, I'm an Engineer working in the Semicon Industry. I work for a division of Nikon, which is how I started getting into Photography. As we use large lenses in our machines and I have learnt (sp?) plenty about lens theory I decided to upgrade my point and shoot to a DSLR. I decided to start with the D40 and am thinking of upgrading soon (will probably get the 18-200 lens first though).

I live beside the botanic gardens so spend a bit of time taking photos there.
I'm also hoping to go on safari again in the next few years as I only had my point and shoot last time, this time I want the proper gear with me :)
I work in Monaghan as Head of Research and Development for a company.http://www.flickr.com/photos/collierjo/

What type of R&D do you work on??

My name is Barry Somers, I work in IT by day and try my very best to do photography during the evenings and weekends.

I've had a camera since I was around 8 but only got my own DSLR last year and started to get more seriously into it, always learning and have both lurked here for ages and post here a decent amount as well.

I've been to a handful of meets and have to say I enjoyed them, sadly I tend not to make it to as many meets as I'd like.

I also keep a blog of my work and other events.

Hello! I'm Karen, 21, art history grad student, dodgey northsider (Dublin).

Been taking photos since I was about 15, finally went over to the dark (i.e - Digital) side when I got a lovely Canon last November and abandoned my Minolta. Since then have been trying my best to take one good picture at a gig and ruing the day I got into music photography. Other than that I like taking portraits and sometimes the odd bit of food photography.
Have always chickened out of meets but might work up the courage at some point!
