John, a farmer in Co. Kildare, wrong side of 40 but keeping the best side out. I've been taking photos seriously since I got my hands on my first digital camera, a Fuji S5000, now I'm on my second Olympus DSLR. I'll shoot anything than moves but mostly stuff that dosen't. Married with 4 kids, who feature on my flickr stream from time to time.

I've always been a hands on type of fella never minded doing my own repairs on any thing from a combine harvester to a computer, I 'm the one everyone calls when their computer/car/electricity/central heating goes on the blink, so I suppose you could say I'm in support as well........

I keep a few greyhounds in partnership with my father (hes the real expert though) always looking for the next flying machine.

I spent a long time lurking around here before I found out that folks on here don't bite, and would love to see more contributions from new members.

Hi my name is Eoin and, yes, I'm pretty big.
Currently living in County Cork - Kilbrittain and certainly not taking as many photos as I should in such an amazing place.

    Me too...

Have a Canon 400D, a few lenses - including a nifty fifty, a lovely new untried flash and a tripod on the way
(that's the great things about 40th birthdays - people can afford to buy you great presents!) and then I'll have no excuses!

Me too! An amazing little thing it was too...

Have no real zone/ type/ genre, but probably prefer landscapes... but I have taken a number of photos at concerts and weddings and I have to keep on forcing myself to take "People" shots up close and personal!
Enjoy the advice that gets dispersed here though, one of the best forums on the site!
What? there's other forums on this site? No, seriously this is an amazing forum and just reading the C&Cs is a learning experience in itself. Haven't made a meet yet as most seem to be up near the world of traffic jams...
and I quite enjoy trying to spot boardsies at the various Cork and munster Photo opportunities.

I have around 8000 photos on Flickr (www.flickr.com/photos/eoino/) but, sorry, over 3000 of them are for friends and family as some are kids and
I also had a few people wary about their image appearing in google searches.

I have a number of my better (Well I think they are!) ones on Pix.ie (pix.ie/bigeoino) which I keep on meaning to update - It has none of that annoying group image spam that ruins the comments on Flickr and is Local!
I am building a website, but, as with all things, these things take time!

Soon to be a dad - so watch out - expect posts in the middle of the night and loads of beautiful baby shots which I'll expect you all to love!

Callina, a meet up would be a good idea. Are you part of the swords photography club. I heard good things about them.

Have been angling to go down there for the last few months but have been busy. Will be going to the next meeting which is on 2 April I think.

I'm Johan from the Netherlands, I've been photographing ever since I got my 10yr old hands on my mothers old Clack camera.

Main things I photograph are macros and landscapes. Havent taken anything lately but thats because I'm forcing myself to learn post processing properly first. Photoshop still cant hold my attention for more than 20minutes tho (which is up from 5min max last year )

Oh and I'm another IT head and a self employed one at that :)

Ok, I think I'll change my career. I'm no longer working in IT, I now work in the telecoms industry. :D It just sounds a little different.

I must say, this is a brilliant thread, and it's good to see so many lurkers posting. Hopefully people will now feel more at ease posting comments and asking for/giving advice.

We're all only learning in here, and no one is perfect.

It's also interesting to see the wide variety of photographic interest.

Hello folks, I'm Dave from Wicklow. Studying Fine Art Media in NCAD, at the moment more interested in audio and interactive work but that'll change I'm sure this summer when I purchase a nice DSLR. At the moment I've been using an Olympus C-770, just a point and shoot really with limited manual controls.

I have a few shots up on http://pix.ie/hendersonfive. Will be adding more over the days, seems like a nice host for images and that - btw is it a boards.ie-run thing aswell?

Anyways yep I'm a jazz/blues fan as you can see, so if you happen to have stumbled across a Miles Davis or a John Coltrane record that you liked, tell us all about it! :)

    Hi there,

Another newbie. Lurked here while deciding to get a DSLR, and now lurking again while I figure out how to use it (Canon 350d). Did a digital photography course in temple bar, but it was crap.

What got me interested? Spent a few years messing about with dodgy second-hand digital compacts, while living abroad. A few people complimented a few of my photos, and it got me interested in trying to take better ones.

    Anyway, great forum.

Oh, I'm not in IT; not technical at all at all.

    Hi,
I've always been the one with the camera while growing up. I'm 27 now, and got really interested in photography while travelling. I love those 'perfect' pictures that are taken spur of the moment, prefer shooting people and animals to buildings and landscapes. I really need more practice though- difficult to find the time. I have a Canon 350D with a couple of nice lenses but am still learning how to make the most of them. I'd love to be able to use photoshop 'properly' :)

I'm an IT Contractor working in South Dublin, which leaves plenty of time for travelling. My next trip is Rome, hoping there'll be great scope for nightshots, another fave of mine!

    Nice to meet you all!

Hi, I'm a 23 year old student, living in Limerick. I rarely post but I read a lot. This forum has probably contributed more than anywhere else to my understanding and appreciation of photography, and I feel a bit guilty that I never give anything back! I've only been interested in photography for about two or three years - my first ever camera was digital, an Olympus P&S used mainly for snapshots. I bought my first decent camera (D50) about a year and a half ago. At first I was interested mostly in landscapes but now I'll take pictures of nearly everything. Over the past few months I've been reading the Strobist blog, and David Hobby's enthusiasm and way with words has practically convinced me that portraiture and off-camera flash is the coolest thing ever - even though I never had an interest in that sort of thing before. So that's taking up a lot of my time at the moment. I was also given an old Film SLR recently - a Pentax ME, and I've taken some pictures with that and developed them in the Uni darkroom, but it's more of a novelty than anything else. I post my pictures up on Flickr and Zooomr if anyone is interested.

My name is Ronan and I'm a 19 year old student in DIT studying photography. Love the course overall and the people are great, however, I'd love to change some elements of it. Like only using black and white film in first year... I find that so constricting!! I pretty much eat, drink and sleep photography. Love trying out new (to me) technical effects in exposing a photograph. I lack motivation, which is my biggest downfall. I've got an ideas notebook full of ideas but most of those don't get past the "drawing board" stage. Photography is what I want to do with my life. People always ask me where I want to go with it and I never really have a set answer for it... apart from "anything but weddings" . Although, the more I think of it, being a wedding photographer wouldn't be that bad at all. Great hours, great pay and you would bring a lot of happiness to people's lives with the photos... It's kinda selling your soul though. I suppose it's always a last resort!

I never made one of these!
My Name is Richard im 16 years old iv been into photography(seriously)for around 2 years..I started photogrpahy(if you could say that)when i wa eight and my mum got me a film camera and since then iv really liked it.Since i was eight we moved from the u.k and i had no camera i got one when i was 12/13 for xmas..At the time we had lots of pets so i used them as subjects.A year and a half later i felt i needed to upgrade i chose a fuji finepix s3100 this really gave me a good boost at it produced great images and had a few manual setting..I started getting into sport and really enjoying photography i then started reading magazines and noticed how cheap slr's were so now im happily using one.Im not to sure if im going to follow a career in photography but id like to give it a shot.I currently shoot sports abit of wildlife and some static cars but usually if im bored ill attemp to shoot new things for me and try and challenge myself

I've been mostly lurking here, with a few posts. Originally from Waterford but longtime Dublin resident. Family home now full of Dubs who can't understand my obsession with the Deise!
Started back in eighties with Film SLR's and then lost interest. Two years ago bought an Olympus E300 and love it. I'm an IT guy as well so the digital darkroom on a PC is great. Shoot a variety of subjects but still need to up my effort and find my style.
At moment have just purchased a film/slide scanner (http://www.shutterbug.net/equipmentreviews/scanners_printers/0907plustek/) and am busy scanning in those old negatives and slides from long ago.

I'm Kev, originally from Dublin but living in Galway now. Work for the government (I know!), have to take some photos as part of the job so got a D50, have started getting more into it now so bought a few more lenses. Mainly interested in landscapes.
Just back from 3 weeks in Argentina so slowly going through photos and uploading a few to my flickr bit by bit. Learning lots from the great advice and shots posted on here, although I'm still a ways off from having anything good enough to post myself!

I'm Sinead, 35, two kids, just finishing first year of a HND in digital media, going on to do the hons degree in Tallaght - hopefully multimedia and photography (if I can actually get myself going and finish the course I'm on and stop wilfing aimlessly to hide from my assignments!). Born in and have lived in Dublin most of my life.

I was given an old film SLR about two years ago when a friend was clearing out her attic and it was love at first shoot. I upgraded to a 350D about a year ago, and I'm (hopefully) ordering a 5D within the week.

I kind of fell into gig photography as my ex and two brothers are musicians and it gave me something to do when I was waiting about for them. I enjoy the buzz of it tremendously. I love portraiture, macro, abstract stuff too. I'll shoot anything really. Just back from a week in Scotland so if I get time to process expect lots of castles and mountains in the near future :)

I haven't been very active here recently due to college stuff, but end of April I'm free! :D

My name is Daire ... yet another software engineer. What IS it with that actually, is it because practically everybody in the country actually works in telecoms nowadays ?!?!? -ahem- anyhow, bit of a film luddite myself. I've got a couple of nikon film cameras, a couple of MF cameras including a newly acquired SQ-ai system, and a bunch of old kodak folders, box brownies, half frame cameras, polaroids, etc etc etc. Also building my own MF monorail view camera at the moment :-)

Sadly don't have as much time to get out and about as I'd like at the moment because this happened a few short weeks ago (although it seems like months and months and months. I'm told it gets better :-))

Another lurker stepping out from the shadows.

I'm a thirtysomething vet from Sligo. I've been dabbling with cameras ever since I was given a film compact after the inter cert (now I feel old), graduated through a Praktica SLR and a Nikon F65, and now have a Nikon D50 and various bits and bobs.

I have a pretty wide interest from a subject point of view. I joined the local camera club, and enjoy getting critique from somebody other than doting family!

I will have to use this thread as a springboard to start posting more and sticking up stuff for C&C.

I'm Derek or as some people call me "who's the muppet lying down in the mud ?"
I'm 29 and I live in Dunshaughlin, Co. Meath, for work I'm computer programmer but I've been out sick for the last 2 years with a brain tumour (all going well now), I took up photography as "something to do" about a year ago and now that I got my drivers licence back I get to take photo's outside my back garden :)
So if you see a guy with a red smig, shaved head (no, not bald ) and a big question mark scar (?) on his head, its more than likely me

I'm Damian, originally from Belfast, but lived most of my life in the Trim/Athboy area of Meath. Living in Dublin for the past 5 years after 5 years of college in Dundalk.

Also in the IT end of things

First really got into photography about 2001, when I did the whole J1 thing in New York City and had my first digital camera (a whopping 1.3 MP kodak P&S ;) ). Such a great place to take pictures and it got me hooked :D

I only have a few pics printed and framed from that trip. Lost them all in a computer crash :( So i've been back many times to take some more :)

Travel is what got me started on the whole photography thing and that's where I would take the majority of my pics. I get to travel a lot with work these days, so getting to see the world and take some pics with someone else paying for it is nice!

Also into music, so that would be the other area that I would mainly take my pictures in. Concerts, festivals etc. I like architecture as well, so I take a good few pics of cool building and structures..

Got a Canon Powershot A80 in 2004, which was a very good camera for a P&S. I have a Canon EOS 400D for a year now and I haven't looked back since... Nice to be able to take quality pictures compared to the P&S.

I'm on the lookout for some nice lenses now. Thinking of the 10-20mm Canon lens. Pretty pricey here, so I think I'll wait until the next time I'm in the US, where its about 300 euro cheaper :D

Hello I'm Trish from South Kilkenny, I'm 30 & I work for a Construction Co., I've been into photography forever. I got my first SLR about 12yrs ago and recently got my first DSLR. That's about it really

Edit: I guess I forgot to say what I like taking.

Well mostly Macro and Landscapes, I've recently started trying portraiture. But we'll wait and see how it turns out.

I've been lurking around this forum for a long time but never really posted anything.

I'm based in Dublin, currently doing a masters in DCU and modelling is picking up for me a fair bit in 2008. I have an engineering degree so my secret life is being a nerd. ;)

    hi all

I am Marty, 29 yo originally from Malaysia living in Dublin for almost 8 good years now. Day job is an accountant (and at nights reading boards). Had a Canon EOS 300 for few years until it broke (and broke my bank too). Then, I converted myself from film SLR to digital P&S and until now still using a 6-megapix FujiFilm F11. :o

Basically, I gave up the pleasure of having controls and superior quality with portability and comfort of having small camera in the pocket. Having lurking this forum for few months, I must confess I'm getting some temptation to get a digital SLR sooner or later. For a 400D (or even 40D), there's always MasterCard. :D

Hi, i'm John, from Roscommon originally, but living in the big shmoke now for about 12 years. I'm a humble office monkey (non-IT:)). Got my first camera for my first trip abroad (to New York) and have been messing about with it and various upgrades since.
I think like a lot of people here I don't take as many photos as I'd like, and i regularly kick myself for not havin the camera with me when I see something "photoworthy". Really like taking long-exposure shots at night, pictures of animals, and i'm hoping to get into sports photography when I've saved up for a decent long zoom.
Really like this forum btw, i've picked up so much useful info here and have come across some great shots too.
