hey, after you do the medical how long before your notify or offered a position?

The medical is never usually a problem provided you pass obviously but it’s the vetting that holds everything up! I mean some people on here have been waiting quite a while. The police college has intakes throughout the year because obviously they can’t take the entire 440 new recruits in at once and that will obviously affect when you get offered a place. It’s a long process and provided you pass everything expect to be waiting months after months after months!

How hard is the initial test?

From what I've read the IST (Initial Selection Test) is designed to be hard to test how hard you work under pressure and it gets gradually harder just as your time is running out. Did consensia supply you with a mock test with your invite to IST? Apparently it was never designed for you to finish so yeah. .

They never supplied a mock one. They said there is a mock one online to look up, which I will. Is the book worth buying that people are mentioning?

Do they do the Phsycometric testing, to see if you are suited to the job?

Yea if you applied online they won’t supply you with one. But the link on PSNI's comment will take you to it. Im waiting on my book to arrive but apparently its good and for £10 you can’t go wrong!

60% of people who do IST fail!! scary thought!

    Thanks PSNI!

    Can I ask you also.....I asked Ciaran2008.

Will my family history affect my application when it comes to the vetting? I have no convictions etc myself, but am worried my family may affect my chances....

Am I being silly or should I be worried?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators, Help & Feedback Category Moderators Posts: 9,893 CMod ✭✭✭✭Shield

No idea. It all depends on your family's history and whether they were really bold boys and girls.

They were never convicted or imprisoned for anything as far as I am aware.....just 'known' I think.

And I am adopted by that family, so its not my fault! Honest!! I would hate to waste my time applying, then not getting in because of them. I would be gutted.

It will be the vetting people who will decide. Don't go giving out any more personal information than you already have. It would be quite easy to identify you in the future if you do.

    Mandy Moo,

The vetting questionaire asks for some of the following information:-

All information about yourself i.e where you have lived, convictions etc.

Your partners occupation and addresses last 20 years.

Info on any children you may have.

Your parents names, occupations and addresses for the last 10 years.
Your brothers/sisters names, occupations and addresses for the last 10 years.

They also ask if you have any business interests etc..

You also have to provide names and addresses for two referees.

    Regards.

    Mickey2186:)

Its nothing to worry about really, just dont go slow or waste time on a hard question, move on and do your best, if theres one you dont know just have a guess at it.

worrying about it will make you do worse, keep a clear mind and read things through as logically as you can, remember it is designed to see how well you cope with the questions under pressure from the clock, and you are not meant to finish it all.

    :p

    Howdy!

I received word that i passed my medical just over a week ago, it just says psni will be in touch - i assume this will be with the big 'YES' or 'NO'

I have no idea how long it will take for them to get in touch

I will be heartbroken if it is bad news :(

    Only time will tell....

The true, false, cant tell questions are not to bad you should get most of them completed. I think the data sheet was the tricky one. In this there is 30 questions and unless you are ciaran2008 you probably wont get to answer all off these, the advice i was given was to straight away go to the last ten questions and guess them. Then you will only have 20 questions to worry about! It works!

I wonder how quick they are at sending 'dear john' letters :(

It has become natural instinct now for me to run to the letter box every morning - slowly going mental me thinks ;)

Dont think many people who make it this far are getting the dear john letters?? What is your rough number in pool and background?

Haven't plucked up the courage to ring for my number - also can't due to work ... open plan office and a lot of nosey people mean private phonecalls are a BIG no no!

Non RC background - so outcome could go either way

    hey officerproblem,
give them a ring and find out, it only takes 2 mins and will help put your mind at ease.. ring on your lunch break or something!!!
i think the best advice for people who are at our stage (waiting on vetting) is to try be patient, and stop second guessing(maybe i should take my own advice)...
    anyway guys,
    take it easy!!
ps. best of luck to all campaign 13r's...

We do need to stop the second guessing lol - but it is soo hard when we don't know what's going to happen.

Any time i have had the brief chance to ring during office hours I have chickened out - this is soo important to me :(

Keep telling myself no news is good news

No didn't know that! As I said need to work on that a bit! So assuming I pass IST and move onto the AC I could still expect to be in with a chance with a score of around 50?
