Aunty Mary

On the radio yesterday somebody said that approx. 70% of Irish people have an Aunt or Aunts called Mary. After a quick survey of the people in studio, they discovered that it was only 20%, but with such a small sample size, it's hard to tell.

I have one, do you?

I have 2 Auntie Marys if your uncle's wife counts as an aunt, none otherwise.

Edit: I've read the word aunt so many times in this thread that it now looks really weird and meaningless, is this happening to anyone else?

Yup - a great-auntie Mary. She looks/acts like Mr. Burns from the Simpsons too.

Yup! We called her Mary Poppins (not to her face) as kids......she is one of those aunts who always has a smile on her face and puts a smile on yours too. Savage cook too btw!

With 18 grand kids for my parents in total (so far) not one Mary in sight. Don't remember the last time i heard someone call a young child "Mary". So i'm guessing it's not that popular anymore.

Lots of Auntie Ann's out there too i think.

I always took aunt to mean "a parent's sister", not "a parent's sister-in-law", I have no idea of thats the proper definition.
