OK seriously going to have to get something new then cos smart and comfortable dont always go together in relation to womenswear. Don't want to fall off my heels if they ask me to touch my toes.:D

    Hi guys,
I have just applied to the latest PSNI recruitment campaign, and I don't really know what to expect. Can anyone give me any advice etc. Also, are there any books out ther that might help with the initial selection test?
    Thanks!

I was in exactly the same dilemma about two weeks ago when i went for mine. I wore a plain black tracksuit from next which did the job perfect - no stripes or anything, just plain with clean white trainers. The doc will be getting you to do some stretches - make sure you can comfortably move you arms and especially your legs as he will be checking your joints - knees & hips - e.g how far can you lift your leg etc.

Got word that i passed mine on thursday - so i must have been deemed respectable enough.

Hope that helps! Good luck! :)

What's best to wear to the medical? Never been to one.

Wear whatever you feel comfortable in, at this stage it wont matter, you have your number in the pool and wearing a tracksuit and runners is not going to change that.

For the medical I just meant "comfortable and smart" not a suit! but it is good to get into the mind set of uniformity...if you know what i mean......

    Hello all,

So that’s week one down, lots more to go!
There isn’t much advice I can give apart from make sure your well rested before you go in. The first week was pretty much all long days and it may take a while to get used to your surroundings. Be prepared for an emotional rollercoaster on the first day so get chatting to your new squad mates!

    Lethho who are you? :D

    Martin.

i agree, first day is an emotional rollercoaster. be prepared to do a hell of a lot in a short space of time. 6 minutes would be about right. itll seem bad then, but i think martin would agree that it was actually funny looking back.
its enjoyable training. do not underestimate P.E, mainly the running side of things, did a 1k run and a bleep test in our first week. 1k run was fine, but the bleep test got me. just prepare before you go in physically, cos i could have prepared so much better

hey justaquestion.... just wonderin can ya give me and the others a quick run down on what the first week was like??
    how long are the days??
do ya get any time for yourself in the evenings(if so how long)?
can ya leave garnerville at all during the week??
and any other stuff ya can think of!!
Thanks in advance and best of luck with the rest of the training...

like martin said i dont think i can give exact details as to what we did. however, you do not get many evenings free. if you have a free evening you are allowed to leave as long as you are back at 11:30pm. to give an overview, the first week does contain a lot of introductory lectures and stuff which take a long time and are very tiring. you will not get a lot of sleep, so be prepared for that. anyway, its only been a week so i dont have very much to say. think next week is when the work will begin

Marching was very nice mic. very militaristic. what colour were you

Just about what to wear....a guy mentioned bringing a suit earlier....what's this for? What should I turn up in on the first morning?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Ethan321

Fencingj, if you go to the student registraion night they will make it clear what way they want you dressed on the morning you turn up to start.
Personaly i went with a suit even on the registration night, its not necessary on that night but fisrt impressions count;)
the first week includes some relaxed yet mind taxing days and some fairly physical days. To put exact details on a public forum wouldnt be a smart move, apologies but you understand im sure.

    That’s just not true! :D

We've only had 2 quick sessions and only got to watch the real deal. Apparently we'll be in it next week!

    Hello PSNI,

I have applied for the current campaign and have my selection test on 7th May, I was just reading the other thread about Garnerville and noticed that you don't have to stay in after the fourth week, is this correct. I am married with kids so it would be much easier if I could travel in and out every day. only live about an hour and half away.

Also if traveling in and out is there a travel allowance considering your not staying.

I know this question is very early in my campaign but all helps when discussing a career change like this with my wife and family as I'm sure you can understand

    Cheers Demo

PS found this a great forum will there be one just for current campaign

Do you get some sort of daily allowance for food, and anything over you pay for or something like that?

Does the gym have machines only or is there barbells and free weights in it as well? Is there a power rack or squat rack?

    hey MAKEPEACE

I wore jeans, runners and a jumper. All was ok - was a lot more dignified than previous medicals have done. Had to take top off for breathing lung check, and male doc asked first if I had underwear on so I wouldn't feel uncomfortable. Doc/nurse were very sound in my experience.

There is no travel allowance for travelling from, and returning to, home.
