Ed Ed and Edit: On ze topic, why is there such a big kerfuffle? Can' she just cut her hair? For the love of St Dolores and all the Cranberries...

Mr. Burns: "Mattingly! I said shave those sideburns!"

Mattingly: "Look Mr. Burns, I don't know what you think sideburns are..."

Mr. Burns: "Thats it! You're off the team!"

It would be descrimination if she was naturally born with purple hair.
I don't think that is the case though?

This girl was suspended from a school in Tallaght as she had a purple streak in her hair, what a joke. The girl is in 6th year and has been turned away to be taught only months before her Leaving Cert.

Is this not discrimination? How can colour in someone's hair affect how she should be taught.

I say all us school students should dye our hair purple and red and go to school in protest, I'm up for it.:D

So what? She deserves it. You have to abide by the rules no matter what you think of them. Also schools in Tallaght have some of the worst issues with student behaviour in the country (does that supprise anyone? - no - did not think so) so they are right not to put up with any nonsense.

Jesus, being punished by your school because of how you wear your hair is going a bit far!!

We used to be told that when in uniform, we "represented the school". F**k off, I represent myself.

You're incorrect. You wore the school's uniform so you represented the school. Much the same as a soldier in uniform represents the army.

If you had a major problem you should have asked your parents to look into home schooling.

Then f**k off and dont go to school if you dont want to be there. Its simple really. You either want to be educated or you dont. The rules in School are there to try and add some discipline - this includes the uniform.

People slag off teachers etc for having an easy job - I do aswell but one thing I will say in their defence is that nowadays many of them put up day in, day out with a huge amount of abuse that nobody should be expected to put up with where they work. Anyone here under 25 will know exactly what goes on nowadays in Seconadary school in particular. I remember one of my teachers reduced to tears in one incident in class by a little toe rag whom presumes to 'represent himself' aswell suppose. If you dont want to be there then go somewhere else.

I believe most schools have the dress code outlined in some sort of book, given to the students.

If students want to break the dress code, by all means go ahead, but if they're punished for it, they only have themselves to blame.

There's dress codes in working environments too, if people break these and get sacked or another sort of discipline, is that discrimination? No, no it's not. They broke the rules and got punished for it.

If parents object to such codes or rules, then fine, homeschool the fckers.

Exactly, by going to to that school, you agree to be bound by their rules. Don't like it? Tough, go somewhere else or ask them to change the rules. You can't agree to them, then flaunt it by breaking one of them and playing the old soldier when they reprimand you for it.

I'd have a look at Nesf's post about 3 posts above yours. Might end up looking down the business end of the ban-stick.

Fcuk, Pavee Point have organised a protest outside my house! :p

Well, now that is out of the way.....a/s/l?

Anyway, while I dont agree in this particular case, I think certain times this type of thing is justified. Like the bus driver who refused to carry those freaks in England, the rocker guy who lead his bird around on a dog leash. But having went to school under one alot of principals (or in my case dep principals, the principal himself was actually bang on. Unfortunately his role almost seemed to be honory, as the enforcement of wankerish rules was down to his second in command. A small, bullying, petty, trapped in the closet man who got no better joy than, well, being a dick to people generally)

He is gone now apparently. Ive always vowed to call him a twat if I ever see him, but its been 4 years and no sign.

Why under 25? It wasn't a haven of discipline before then at all. I'm nearly 30 and the teachers in my school had to put up with awful sh1t. I'd say the crap in secondary schools started in the 70s or 80s.

The girl was interviewed on newstalk this morning. (im still laughing at her saying she was 17 and a half!)

She said that she turned up for school on a monday and wasnt wearing her school jacket. The principal stopped her and asked her where it was and she said it was ripped and her mother wasnt going to get a new one so close to her finishing school. (she is doing her leaving) The headmaster said thats fine and to bring a note.

When she got to class her year head marched her out because of her hair. As they passed the principal on the way out and he asked what was going on, he didnt intervene.

The problem the girl's family is that the rule is in the rule book about hair cuts but it has never been enforced. Apparantely there are plenty others with mad hair cuts who have never been disciplined.

Were doing our mocks atm, and this one guy wasn't allowed into the first exam as he had a bit of a beard going on. Model student, never in trouble, in the student council as well.

At the same time friend of mine is allowed do his with his hair dyed green and blue, and shaved in some weird way(just above the ears with the rest longish). I don't agree with stopping people from doing exams, but consistency is needed at least.

Cake, and grief counseling, will be available at the conclusion of the test

School are gettting strict everywhere, my old school got in security camera's all over the corridors and outside the school, its like fort knox now.

Jewellery, hair colour, make up and non school jackets should not come into the school rules. Well obviously basketball earrings should be banned due to health and safety, we dont want jacinta's ears being ripped off in PE! :D

    Yes, yes they should.

If you fail to see why then you should never be in a position of management.

lol while in 5th year a friend was sent home and told he couldn't come back until the docs were gone.
10 minutes later the door opens and in he walks in his socks - teacher couldn't say a word to him as wearing only socks wasn't mentioned in the dress code.
Absolutely silly behaviour imo. Nothing to do with management as school is meant to exercise a person's imagination as well as prepare them for real life and not just turn children into mindless robots.

    Prepare them for real life?

The majority of areas they'll go into later in life will have some form of dress code, so why not introduce this to them early? They have all the time in the world outside of school to be "different", school is an establishment, just as work is, there are rules that come with it. If you don't like it, then fck off somewhere else.

I presume you're a 6th year, if so, you'll understand later on in life when you're a bit more mature.

I did my Leaving Cert in 2001.

Sheesh...one idle comment and I've been labelled a toe-rag? Apologies for causing any offence; I am well aware that teaching is far from easy - my sister does it, as do a number of my friends. All I was trying to express was that routinely being told we represented our school got a little tiresome when I'd heard it for the 6th time in one day. That is all. Thank you and good night.

my sons teacher told him, infront of the class, that if he didnt cut his hair he would not be allowed back to school.he has shoulder lenght hair and hes just 12 years old. i am not going to have his hair cut so i dont know what will happen. but i think us parents should start standing up for our children, theses teachers are only bullies and somthing should be done about them.the way a child wears thier hair is apart of each thier own identity, and i for one will not have it cut to suit some oul b,,,,x

thats nothing, i was doing a test in 5th year (christmas exams) in the sports hall with hundreds others, when the vice principal saw my hair (died dark red) she took me away from my test, phoned my parents, had a long talk with me and put me back to a different seat, a seat where she could keep an eye on me?? as if i had cheated by dying my hair?!

also in 6th year i shaved my hair quite tight before i went back because i dyed it, when i got back you couldnt even notice the highlights (depending if it was in a bright light) and i was suspended until it was back to normal..absolute disgrace, u couldnt even notice it and i was suspended!
