Just received my vostro 1000. All very nice expect the sound is f*cked, all crackily and stuff. They're sending somebody round on Friday as they reckon it's a motherboard issue.

    sh*t

Got mine today and its got the same problem! Sound is skipping/crackily

Did they sort it in the end? was it a motherboard issue?

    Cheers

I have this as €519 including VAT. Does anyone have coupons / discounts that can be applied?

Also, I assume you dont have to be a business to order these Vostros?

They sent an engineer round to swap the motherboard about 3 days later. It sounded fine when he left but I think I just played too loud a song and didn't notice the problem. It's still there. I haven't done anything about it since, should really get back on to them. He said the only thing it could be is either the speakers or the motherboard. But the problem is still there when I use the headphone socket and the motherboard's been swapped so I'd say this one will have to go back to Dell.

No, from what I've read it's a different sound problem with the 1500's. Heard a sound sample of that and it's not the same thing.

I don't have this problem with my Vostro 1500. However, when I have head-phones plugged in, I can hear interference when the hard-drive spins (which is most of the time)..

Also, the damn power cable falls out about once every 30 minutes. Very annoying!
    Still love the laptop though..

Yeah it's more of a headphone problem with the 1500. Tis a nice laptop alright, hey Krusty, would you be able to link me to them drivers you were talking about in another thread for the graphics please? :)

Has anyone got a good laptop bag? I want to get a Tucano BF XXL 154 sleeve for it. Would like to get a keyboard skin too (stop crumbs falling through the keys!)

You shouldn't hear anything, if you are listening to something.

The cord should never fall out, push it in hard, and strap it up, then it is great.

This coupon works fine for laptops and desktops from the home section of the Dell menu. Make sure you don't navigate through the 'small and medium business' section and it should work fine.

    It expires 27th Feb.

The Red colours were moved to 'Product Red', some sort of charity type thing. I reckon the prices went up.

Never had a problem with a laptop before. This vostro 1000 is a disaster.
First had the noise in the hard drive, Dell guy swapped motherboard and fan , fixed it but broke other stuff.

Then the weird sound is back. Dell now tell me its supposed to sound like that - Rubbish. Last thing happened yesterday. fn key no longer changes the brightness. Its fine for a half hour or so after i turn on the laptop then doesnt work. if you pull the power out and it goes to half brightness then plug power back in it stays at half brightness and you cant change it.

I want my money back. Its a disaster

Nice Price, How come orders are cheaper over the phone? Do you just barter?!

"Whats the best price you can do? I have bought loads of systems from you this year" etc?

Probably because of the upgrades. If it was a bottom of the barrel laptop for €400 and you weren't upgrading a thing or adding any extras then I doubt they'd give a discount. They most likely make good margin on higher end systems (like the xps) and even more margin on upgrades and extras. This gives them more leeway. Saying that I've never ordered off them on the phone so I could be miles off.

just hassle them like mad. i let him think i didnt know anythign and then through everything about how poxy 667MHz on Ram realy is etc and also i told him i have a coupon ftrom a friend. he checked it all out and it totaled 1270 (i gave him the price i had speced, i rang about a week ago for same spec and without saying i knew how much it was he was quoting smt like 1500 for the same one i spec'd at 1270 online) and then after about 30 mins going through everythinghe said delivery wud be 60 euro, i told him thats absurd that i built a new PC muyself with parts from 3 sites and a full desktop didnt cost 60 quid delivery, then told hikm i bought a 22inch screen and a dvd drive (which i did lol) and it was sitting infront of me after 3 days for 21 euro delivery. told him to stuff his 60 delivery and after ages basically said a i might be better off not getting now and come back when offeres like free delivery suit me. then i reduced to vista basic as i told him i was going to format it and sinstall xp pro myself (i have a spare key lying abround for it) and how i dont need bullcrap like works. he said it comes as standard but u can still argue u dont need it so shudnt be payinbg for it. finally got him to 1190.

basically he realised i know every single bit i was taling about and wudnt be conned into stuff that doesnt matter

i rang in the first place cos i knew they had red covers left but they dont offer them online and i really wanted the red one.

haha it was funny i said first if i got him to 1200 id buy, he went 1240 immediately but then i started the argueing about things and then he starting argueing about how he came to 1200 and i still wasnt happy lol. settled on 1190 when he was about to start crying id imaginbe.key is dont let them deflect things whcih they try to do. keep to ur point and give comparisons on the delivery like that. 60quid is absurd so i basically said i wasnt gonna pay it.

oh yeah and all the warranty etc was always at the most basic so there was no reduction from that end. as I've been told towards the end of the month is the best time to chance it

It's a great laptop and is perfect for what you need (might even be a little over kill). At that price definitely get it.
