Another question for you guys (again, apologies if it has already been asked, I've been searching for a while for this with no luck)...

Currently, if someone buys an iphone in the USA, can it be activated through iTunes in the UK, so that it works on O2 UK (on their iphone contract)?

I'm asking this because I'm thinking of buying an iphone and unlocking it for the moment. But, when the official Irish release comes around, I'd like to just plug in my iphone, reset the firmware and subscribe to an Irish network contract (so that I can use all the features like visual voicemail).

Does you guys know if this is possible? I've heard conflicting reports.

    Thanks.

No a US iphone is a US iphone a UK one is a UK one

    Yeah

The only thing that does not work for me is the locate me feature on meteor it will work with the locateme app though

    Oktoprep update to 1.1.2

Jailbreak then run the official dev team upgrade to 1.1.3

You can then run the baseband updater from the installer and then anysim 1.3

that leaves you on 1.1.3 with 04.03.13 baseband

You may have to add i.unlock.no to the sources and install the youtube fix

and of course you have to do the contacts sms fix

OK Cool . And using this way will all my aplications remain on the phone ?

Oh , and does it matter if you use the restore file (iPhone1,1_1.1.3_4A93_Restore) or should I be using different ones ?

    Thanks .

Logistics is your big problem but if you can get it back to america you may be able to bring it to an Apple store.
But surely when you register the warranty, you'll need to input your address. And if you input a non-US address, surely they'll realise when you try and get a comeback on it.

Anyways.. seriously thinking of buying it now. But warranty issue is somewhat worrying, but I presume they're pretty reliable and sturdy.

Another one or two questions: would people recommend getting a cover / screen protector? Do i need to get a US plug adapter in order to charge it?

Would like to have all accessories and bases covers when it does arrive.

If warranty is important to you, buy from the North and be covered by UK Consumer Law, which supersedes whatever Apple says about warranty.

I don't know.. it's almost €100 more. Would it be worth it?

You don't register your warranty the warranty is associated with your AT&t contract of course you don't have one but you do have a faulty non bootable iphone with your AT&T card in it ;)

You dont need a charger it is universal

yes get a cover the screen does not scratch easy but the chrome surround does

No you are in the same boat the warranty is linked to your o2 contract while the phone is subject to normal consumer law you clearly violate the warranty when you jailbreak it
Can't see any court in the UK upholding an Irish residents rights in regard to a phone that has been tampered with in violation of the manufacturers guidelines.

No remove all your applications first

1.1.3 handles applications differently than previous firmware versions that is why so many apps are not working in 1.1.3

If you use the dev team installer it downloads the firmware to the phone for you

BTW if you have a mac a new version of Independence is out that includes a jailbreak for 1.1.3 not sure how good it is

No. You would be covered by UK consumer law as well as that of the European Union. Where you habitually reside is not the issue, it is where the item was purchased. You do, cdebru, have a point about the tampering aspect though, which is why you must of course virginize the Iphone prior to returning it to the point of purchase, who will then be legally obliged to repair, replace or refund.

Cheers for all the help cdebru. Won't bother with the warranty so.. I assume they're good build quality but I've always a fear of being the one who gets the one bad egg! :D

By the way, any recommendation on a cover?

Hi, I've been trying to unlock the iPhone using the more long winded Hotz way because ZiPhone 2.0 was giving me the silver apple screen. I have it done down as far as "installing the 1.1.2" software but the link to "download the 1.1.2 jailbreak archive" is broken...so I can't extract the archived files...can anyone tell me where to go from here?

    Thanks in advance!

basquille, i wouldn't bother with a cover, most make the iphone very chunky and more liable to gather dust in the parts between the cover and the phone.

what i did was buy a screen protector, it's a thin film of plastic that covers the whole front of the phone sans the home button and protects the screen.

one slight problem with it is that it shows up grubby fingerprints a lot more but that's a small price to pay as you'll have a scratch free screen unless you scratch it hard enough to break through the plastic which you will know when you do it.

Have recommended this one before. It's the one I'm using and I think its brilliant. I've dropped the phone once with it from a height and no damage at all. I also use a screen protector which came with the case.

Ok, managed to solve the above, but now when I go to installer and look for the Tweaks(1.1.2) category to install iWorld, there is no such Tweaks(1.1.2) category! There's a Tweaks(1.1.1) and Tweaks(1.1.3), but no 1.1.2...

    Can anyone help?

If anyone is having this issue, it's been resolved on hackint0sh.org -

"someone has discovered that Tweaks 1.1.2 will come up if you install the Community Sources" under the "Sources" category. And of course, iWorld is inside."

I had problems with installer on mine, couldn't install iWorld to get the phone/sms working after unlocking the phone using ZiPhone's 2.0 method. So I had to redo everything using the Hotz method - without using the GUI and then the only problem was I couldn't find iWorld on the installer, but if you see my last post to get around that...hope this helps!

Sorry benifa but that is nonesense

So you have a problem with the iphone lets say it is no sound ( could be anything but we will use that)

You put the phone back to the way it came and head off to the Carphone warehouse or apple store

You: excuse me my iphone is broken there is no sound from the headphones
Assistant: Ok sir lets have a look at the phone
    You: here you go
Assistant: This phone is not activated how could you possibly know there is a problem with the sound.

And you would say what exactly that would still mean you had a warranty
