Water Price shocker, the hidden truth.

So I was in a pub with some friends this evening and not being a drinker of alcohol, soft drinks or sh1tty concentrated fruit juice, I asked for the only drink that appeals to me, a pint of water. I was told the tap water was dirty due to roadworks in the area. So because I actually needed the water and it wasn't just for the sake of sipping, I ended up paying €2.70 for it and then I discover it's only 250ml:eek:

    So €2.70 x 4 = €10.80 per litre.

When I was in France last, I bought 10 x 2 litre bottles of water in a supermarket for €1.10.

The same quantity of water from the pub would have cost me €216, that's 196 times more expensive and to top it all off, it was water from Coca Colas Deep River Rock line:(

And no I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't need it. What a rip off!

Try buying a bottle of river rock from as pub in Paris and see how much it costs. Not exactly a fair comparison!

    What a retarded comparison.

Also, we have FREE drinking water here, that's a helluva lot cheaper than France if my figures are correct.

Out of curiosity what about Guinness over there?
(I really have no idea here, just curious)

    Lazare, that's a bit harsh.
    Edit:
Ok, now read your second post, see where you're coming from, kind of, still initially harsh

You are comparing the price of water in a pub to the price of water in a supermarket in France? Terrible example.

I have been in some of the cheapest areas in France and the dearest. Prices in Paris for drink can be dearer. In the countryside it can be cheaper.

But of all countries, France is not particularly cheaper than here!

If you "don't drink" then don't drink.

I paid €4.90 for a pint the other day, in 1982 my Dad bought one for 48p, what a rip off!!!:

Ah jaysus Cormie, surely you're smarter than that?

I know it's obviously different in a pub as opposed to a supermarket, but 196 times more expensive is what I'm pointing out. The countries, establishments and brands are irrelevant, it's the difference in price for the same product that's shocking.

Oriel, what do you mean by "if you don't drink, then don't drink" I needed water.

I paid (or more accurately, my company paid) €11 for a beer in Paris two years ago, so that means that France is more than twice as dear as Ireland.

    .

Well why the thread title? I'm fcuking sick of all this 'Ireland is sh1t' crap, we're a WHOLE lot more comfortable here than most countries, not to mention previous generations. Stop fcuking complaining.

I pay €1.25 for 5 litres of water here in the wesht of Ireland. €1.10 for 20 litres is a great price, I very much doubt you'll get that price in any pub/resturant in Paris Or anywhere else.

    You lie!

The important bits are highlighted. Oh, and I can get the water free in a pub, so that's like, 110 times less expensive than in France.

    A decent comparison would be:

In tesco here, it's €.90 per litre of Evian Mineral Water
In France, it was €0.055 per litre

Therefore, on a similar basis, Ireland (for drinking water) is 18 times more expensive than France.

Even though the first post says edited at 2:39, I actually opened it up to change the title before you made that reply, it took me that long to come up with a title that wouldn't offend:rolleyes:

As I said, the countries are irrelevant. It's not an Ireland is a rip off thread, or else I would have posted in the relevant forum ;) simply pointing out a huge difference in price. Relax folks, don't always be looking for an argument, you wont get one from me.

    Was this on the street?

They'll rip you off once they hear your Irish accent. To the natives they wouldn't dare charge that.

I remember one of the hotdog stalls near Macys sold me a bottle of coke for $2, went to another and the guy actually paused before asking me for $4. I needed the drink and couldn't see another stall so said fck it but I know the natives New Yorkers would have told him to shove it.

It's a pain in the ass in the airport too, you can't bring water through security so once you pass, your only option if you want water is to buy it in the shops, the going rate in Dublin Airport seems to be €2.40 for a litre of the good stuff, I've never paid full price for it though, got it for €2 twice by just saying "would you take 2 euro for it?" ;)

Weird, been there 4 times in the past 3 years and never experienced this..

In Norway, I pay 24 NOK for a bottle of water in the shop, that's €2.99 for a 750ml bottle plus the 2.5NOK 'pant' to make you bring it back and recycle it... so €3.30 if you don't want to bring the bottle back...
sometimes I wish I was still at home :)

The good stuff??? Is there a difference? i would assume all water bottling plants would have to comply to certain standards and regulations before selling water to the general public.

Or is this just buying into branding? It's water you wear - but it'll cost you €2 more than the shop brand.

Coming back to your original post and the cost of bottled water in a pub - you're paying for the drink, and the use of the facilities and the service. you wouldn't expect to pay the same for a meal in a restaurant as you would for a take away, why should a pub be any different?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,867 ✭✭✭✭cormie

By "the good stuff" I just meant water, not any particular brand of water. Water being healthy and essential = water being the good stuff :)

Again, I'm not arguing the fact I'm using a pubs premises etc, simply pointing out the huge price difference. Although your points lose validation considering had the tap water been drinkable, it would have cost me nothing for a pint, I may have even got a little bit of lemon thrown in too :D

Obviously the only solution here is to start drinking petrol. Shop around and it can be had for as little as €1.14 a litre. You'll need your own bottle though, and it's probably better if you're a non-smoker.
