Water Price shocker, the hidden truth.

So I was in a pub with some friends this evening and not being a drinker of alcohol, soft drinks or sh1tty concentrated fruit juice, I asked for the only drink that appeals to me, a pint of water. I was told the tap water was dirty due to roadworks in the area. So because I actually needed the water and it wasn't just for the sake of sipping, I ended up paying €2.70 for it and then I discover it's only 250ml:eek:

So €2.70 x 4 = €10.80 per litre.

When I was in France last, I bought 10 x 2 litre bottles of water in a supermarket for €1.10.

The same quantity of water from the pub would have cost me €216, that's 196 times more expensive and to top it all off, it was water from Coca Colas Deep River Rock line:(

And no I wouldn't have bought it if I didn't need it. What a rip off!

I have been in some of the cheapest areas in France and the dearest. Prices in Paris for drink can be dearer. In the countryside it can be cheaper.

But of all countries, France is not particularly cheaper than here!

I pay €1.25 for 5 litres of water here in the wesht of Ireland. €1.10 for 20 litres is a great price, I very much doubt you'll get that price in any pub/resturant in Paris Or anywhere else.

A decent comparison would be:

In tesco here, it's €.90 per litre of Evian Mineral Water
In France, it was €0.055 per litre

Therefore, on a similar basis, Ireland (for drinking water) is 18 times more expensive than France.

I remember one of the hotdog stalls near Macys sold me a bottle of coke for $2, went to another and the guy actually paused before asking me for $4. I needed the drink and couldn't see another stall so said fck it but I know the natives New Yorkers would have told him to shove it.

It's a pain in the ass in the airport too, you can't bring water through security so once you pass, your only option if you want water is to buy it in the shops, the going rate in Dublin Airport seems to be €2.40 for a litre of the good stuff, I've never paid full price for it though, got it for €2 twice by just saying "would you take 2 euro for it?"

In Norway, I pay 24 NOK for a bottle of water in the shop, that's €2.99 for a 750ml bottle plus the 2.5NOK 'pant' to make you bring it back and recycle it... so €3.30 if you don't want to bring the bottle back...

Coming back to your original post and the cost of bottled water in a pub - you're paying for the drink, and the use of the facilities and the service. you wouldn't expect to pay the same for a meal in a restaurant as you would for a take away, why should a pub be any different?

By "the good stuff" I just meant water, not any particular brand of water. Water being healthy and essential = water being the good stuff

Again, I'm not arguing the fact I'm using a pubs premises etc, simply pointing out the huge price difference. Although your points lose validation considering had the tap water been drinkable, it would have cost me nothing for a pint, I may have even got a little bit of lemon thrown in too

Obviously the only solution here is to start drinking petrol. Shop around and it can be had for as little as €1.14 a litre. You'll need your own bottle though, and it's probably better if you're a non-smoker.

I have actually seen people smuggling in coke in pubs, makes sense, it costs more than beer.

200ml of coke is €2.80 in my local, 2000ml is around €1.40 in tescos with offers, so about 20 times the price, but it is fairer to compare small bottles with small bottles. A lot of beer is just twice the price. The biggest difference is the €1 bottles that could be €5.50 in some pubs. Another weird thing is the pricing of beer vs soft drinks. In supermarkets you get massive discounts going for bigger bottles, while beer usually costs more for larger containers.

I would expect to pay €2.70 for water in a pub, I would expect, I wouldnt pay it.

You cant compare the price to supermarkets though. That is like saying a cake cost X in a restaurant but flour only costs X.

A fairer comparison would be saying my bottle of beer costs 5 times as much in a pub, and water costs 10 times as much. But if you do that you will find that the €2.70 for the 250ml bottle was a (relative) bargain. I doubt you would get the exact same chilled bottle in a shop at the same difference beer can be got.

The only ppl who buy water in ibiza clubs are people out of their heads on acid and pills (which is pretty much 90% of the people in eden/pacha/etc). Those people don't drink alcohol hence, the clubs have to make their money somehow!

Ha! I never get over people turning their nose up at tapwater when I ask them do they mean bottled or tap, then they come out with "Put ice in it". I mean do they not put two and two together?

Edit: The ice could have bought in, like we had to do in Galway last year.

Tap water is fine with me, and the annoying thing was, my friend went up to order a water with a splash of blackcurrant and another barman said the same thing about the water, but that he'd check, and it turned out to be fine and she got her pint of blackcurrant!

A pub will charge about €25 for 250ml of spirits which costs me about 20-25cent to make.
