Tip a taximan? If he's in a 10 year old battered Toyota Corolla I figure why tip when he won't provide a modern car for his fares.
And if he uses a modern 07/08 reg car I figure he is doing well so again no tip.

Pfft! Obviously you aren't self employed.

I tip the hot pizza guy more than generously and I always let people keep the change unless it's a crazy amount.

Regarding the minimum wage...there used to be ways employers could get around it..not sure if this is still the case.

They can say it is part of a training scheme
    Employee is under 18

I know Pizza Hut did use the first case and potential employess were told tips would make up the shortfall

I never tip anyone bar taxi drivers for getting me home safely. You get paid to do your job. Save all that tip money for people who really need it badly.

Like pizza delivery guys with perfect bone structure and pretty eyes and the most adorable smile and you could just hug them all day.

You're quoting Gang of Gin in Post 32 and that was my post from Post 16

Someone is stealing the (usually rubbish) posts that I write. Someone is gonna pay

I stopped delivering pizzas a while ago ;) Was only a temporary gig for extra cash

I tip delivery men (€2 or rounded up) and restaurant staff (5-15% depending on service). It's very rare that I leave less than 10% in a restaurant, simply because their wages are so useless. I tip lounge boys but not barmen for the same reason.

I almost never explicitly tip taxi drivers. If they are silent (or REALLY interesting) and take the most direct route and I'm in a good mood I'll round it up. The only times I've tipped is when they find very clever shortcuts which avoid nasty traffic and save me time or money in the process.

You're paying the taxi driver handsomely to get you home safely which is after all his job so why on earth would you tip him? Of all the people I'm never going to tip taxi drivers are top of the list.

I find there is a difference between getting your food on time and getting home safe and sound. Obviously I wouldn't tip them if they are blatantly trying to rip me off. Outside of taxi men though i wouldn't tip.

Tip 12.5 per cent in restaurants for standard service, won't tip for bad service. Round up taxi fares sometimes depending on my mood. Tipped guys who delivered my sofa e20, same for guys who delivered my wardrobes.

Since almost all taxi drivers ive met own the car then i fell tipping them is exactly the same as if they give me a few quid off the fare.

So when one gives me a few quid off i'll tip him.

Good point, but what about when one rounds the fare down?...

Seriously, I check the metered fare all the time. And I'd say in over 90% of case's the fare is rounded down, ie the meter reads €9:40 and the driver asks for €9-

In that case I'll always give the €euro tip.

Yeah, he's a nice guy, but I have not seen him around in ages.

The rest of them get paid well enough.

The vast majority of taxi drivers I've come across have been horrible thats why and I've had a few bad experiences. I also think the fare is steep enough without adding a tip into the equation.

Of course there is a difference between bad service in a restaurant and getting home unscathed. My point is that when you hire a taxi driver it is an unspoken part of the agreement that he/she will get you home safely so you are already paying them to do that in the fare so why pay them extra?

Why do people keep mentioning that waiter/ess get such a poor wage. They are on at least minimum wage like a lot of people ie those who work in a factory, dunnes or tescos or where ever and as someone said would you tip the cashier for scanning your shopping. I refuse to tip if the service is bad even if the food is excellent as 99% of the time the kitchen staff slave for hours and dont see any of the tips. There is no excuse for bad service. If you don't like the job change it and if you still don't like it you shouldn't be working in the industry. It is called the hospitality industry afterall.
I always tip taxi driver as we nearly always get the same guy. He always finds time to collect us whatever time of night even if we havn't booked so I guess due to the fact tip well he remembers that.
The hairdressers is an iffy one though. I usually spend 20 mins in there and cost is usually around €50. nice wage for 20mins so sometimes i do tip sometimes i don't

More often than not the kitchen staff are paid more than the floor staff so the tip issue evens itself out.

Yes I agree that the wage would even out as usually the chef could be at work for twice the time the waiter/ess and unless they are are relief chef they get a set salary rather than by the hour so if the chef does a few hours extra more often than not they don't get paid for it. I do think the kitchen staff should get a share of the tips especially the poor guy on wash up who probably gets the rawest deal and are usually the hardest worker as things get fired from dining room and from us in kitchen and more often than not never complain.

Why tip? Do you tip shop assistants who help you out? I really don't think it's necessary, one of the reasons i hate NYC

Yeah I brought up the example earlier of the tip jar at the till at an o'briens when I was working in the same shopping center at a book store - my friend works for o'briens so I know he was on around the same money as me and you wouldn't see a tip jar beside our till even thou we had to run around alot more to get stuff for people.

O and I love NYC, even with the tipping

Usually in a Restaurant I will tip 10-15% depending on Service and food, both have to be good.

I never tip Dublin Taxi drivers but will tip or round up fare for London taxi drivers especially if they have taken a few short cuts.

The only other people I tip are barmen in hotels and porters.

I always tip my hairdresser, she is really good and does my hair perfect, it took me ages to find a good hairdresser so I appreciate how good she is!

    Sometimes I tip taxi drivers.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,900 ✭✭✭Quality

Went for meal today, It cost €233 left €260. Meal good, service not great, but I will always tip.

My hairdresser always gets a €10.

Beautician will get between €5 and €10.

    I dont tip delivery men.

I do tip taxi drivers. usually €1 or €2 euros.

I not too fond of pizza hut either. The amount of waiting time (even when there are empty tables) in that place is unreal. So if you guys are still gumming for a decent pizza restaurant, Pizza Stop across from Bruxelles off Grafton Street is a great place-cozy atmosphere, good service and very nice food :)

It's worth bearing in mind that a lot of barstaff are on minimum wage as well, especially outside Dublin. I'm not saying they should or shouldn't be tipped. It's worth bearing in mind that a lot of people on minimum wage are "casual" workers and might only have a certain amount of hours a week. Even forty hours a week on minimum wage is less than 360 euro.

No tax then? Or did he charge you tax on top of it?? Anyway way off topic but you could have (had you known better) taken him to court.

That would have been HILARIOUS! He has very little English! (He's Cantonese) Anyway, all in the past now.

I wonder if I told my students that I don't get paid for my Teaching Practice would they tip me?

prices are bad enough in ireland without adding in tips - would never tip unless service and food were excepional in a restuarant.

i live in spain now - irish waiting staff have nothing to complain about in wages - typically their wages will be 1/3 of the average in ireland and alot of things still cost nearly the same (including renting an apartment) and the locals (in madrid) idea of a tip here is 5cent....

if they dont like the wages they should have worked harder to get a better job, or failing that they should just get another job.
