Regardless of the validity of this particular story, this kind of theft occurs. That's what the thread's about. Who is turning this into a nationality issue? Off topic.

I think it's safe to say that everyone here should be able to guard against a scam like this. I mean, we have all been hearing about ATM safety for years now; I for one would not allow any interaction whatsoever while I'm working away on the machine. I don't see how anybody could be so clueless as to allow somebody to quite obviously distract you and then be utterly unaware that there was another person on the other side going at the keypad to get the money. Maybe an elderly person, but apart from that, it is ownage of the highest order

I'm with AIB and I've found when l use a non-AIB ATM that there can be a delay of quite a few seconds between taking the card out and the money being given, l think it's fairly likely that someone could be distracted enough in that time for the scammer to grab whatever amount the person had requested themselves but l find it hard to believe that the scammer could select the amount and grab the card for the cash to come out. After the experiences I've had with Roma aggressively hassling me, one tried to back me against a wall in Drury st shouting "give me euro", it wouldn't surprise if most atm scamming is by them which isn't to say Irish and other nationalities aren't doing it. I don't believe it's eastern europeans in general, l know lots who are here in gainful employment, but specifically Roma people because I've yet to see one in any sort of job apart from begging. My apologies if people see my viewpoint as being racist but that's how l feel after several encounters with them.

Begging certainly seems to be a large part of their culture, but unfortunately people tend to only remember their interactions with the ones who are dicks.

I agree that it is off topic and has no baring on the story whatsoever. But it was turned into a nationality issue in the first post when the OP felt it necessary to tell us that the villains of this dubious story were evil Roma children.

I doubt it's because of any malicious thoughts towards Roma kids. It's just the first thing that might come to mind when describing the kid in question. If it was a tall kid the OP might mention it. If it was an average Irish kid he might just describe him as scum. But it just happened to be a Roma kid so that fact was mentioned. I don't see the big fuss. By now nobody should be fooled by this trick. If people start messing with you at an ATM you just have to be brutal.

But it is always Roma teenagers!!

Every single newspaper report of ATM theft says its Roma. Unless the papers are racist too and only report the roma atm thefts and not the irish skanger atm thefts?? Now of course the papers rarely explicitly state it was a Roma but one can invariably read between the lines. "Witness said the culprit was of eastern european origin.....had a gold tooth..... darker complexion....claimed asylum x years ago" etc etc

Just like you can read between the lines with other types of thefts. Shop owner overwhelmed by large group of eastern european origin. Gold teeth, long flowing dresses, One member of group snuck into cash room etc

Have never experienced travelers doing this, nor groups of skangers, nor groups of Polish builder types and their girlfriends etc.

Unfortunately I've never had a positive encounter with one, I'm sure there are honest, genuine Roma out there but a lot seem to have no problem with bullying people for money. I've no problem with begging, l often give to homeless on the street but not to people who are in my face trying to intimidate me. l don't believe it's only Roma who are ATM scamming but that a high percentage could be them, just like l don't believe 100% of 419 scammers are Nigerian. Back on topic though, people do need to be vigilant using atms, l see people on the phone or talking to a mate and not paying attention to the atm all the time, they're leaving themselves wide open to some sort of scam.

Not to mention taking too bloody long at the machine... now that's a real crime!

The small flaw in that analogy is...

Have you ever seen a Roma (not a Romanian) work?
Have you ever heard of a Roma working in Ireland?
Do you know of a friend of a friend whose milkman knew someone who was a Roma and worked?

Violence will do you no good sure. If you want to get rid of the bad elements spread the word. Don't give money to beggers!

I take offense to this statement, please retract it. I am English and have secured gainful employment by starting my own Disco & Karaoke business. FWIW I was living on the streets of London for a while and NEVER asked anyone for money. I managed to have at least one hot meal a day, and keep warm, dry, sober and smoke! (OK maybe shouldn't have done the last one, but I mean roll my own, not drugs!)

I was not an alcoholic, drug user, or criminal, in fact I have never been in trouble with the police, and don't intend being. But if I had been a polish. one legged, alcoholic, lesbian, single mother, with a drug problem, I would have been given a apartment straight away.

You say you are English? Then why does it seem that English is not your first language?? :D

He isn't saying these atm scammers are english, he is saying they should F$^% off back to their own country or England. ie the joke being, "let them be the Brits problem hehe :D as long as they are out of Ireland"

There are plenty of ATMs that have you put in your bank card and then ask you to remove it straight away. Then you enter your pin, select cash withdraw, and then the amount. Bingo! That's what happened to the card. The person in the OPs story would probably have removed the card before she put in her pin, making the scam/.

The only machines I've ever come across that work like that are the easycash type ones like above. They are the standalone machines and I've never seen one that wasnt inside the premises, be it the bank or a shop.

Generally , your best bet is to only use indoor machines as they are very hard for people to tamper with and monitor without drawing serious attention.

Plus, is €200 not usually the most amount shown up next to the buttons? Anymore and you have to hit the other button to specify the amount you want. So in the OP instance, the kid would have had to be at the machine for good while undetected, pushing lots of buttons

    EDIT.
dammit i should read the whole thread before replying. :D

€400 isn't one of the default cash withdrawal options, is it? You'd have to press the 'Other Amount' button and then key in 400. There would had have to be one hell of a distraction, to make this scam come off.

I was always under the impression that the trouble between the English and the Irish was in the the north. As well as the fact that there seems to be a kind of peace there now? So why do people in the republic hate the English? We make you welcome in England, why not do us the same courtesy? Ok I know the English killed a lot of Irish people in 1916, but FFS that was over 90 years ago. Long time to hold a grudge don't you think?

Don't you think england has enough problems? the number of people entering the UK has trebled in the last year, so it's not just Ireland that has this problem. in fact the Home Office is now implementing a system where you can only enter the UK if you have a job and accommodation secured. Also you come direct from your home country.

Oh and FYI I have an A level in English, just because I don't use correct English online doesn't mean I can't smell! LOL :p (tongue in cheek!)

Anyway this is all off topic, so shall we put away our swords and shake hands and get back to the scourge that it Roma ATM scammers?! :D:):D

dude i have a couple of things to tell you
1 the north is the same as the south so when the brits shooted the irish in the niorth they were shooting the irish in ireland ianed it was not 90 years ago
2 you might be nice to the irish whebn we're in england but the ere is a l;ot of non-nioce behaviour that goes on

bnut i don't care ye are all right in my book as long gas ye don't say eire

2008 - 1916 = 92? Anyway I think Eire is a silly name, much better to say Republic as it is. I have always viewed the north as the UK anyway, much the same way as I see Wales and Scotland. They have English money so what is the difference ? I was in the Army for 12 years and always said privately that we shouldn't be in the north. It's not our right to go wading in and lay down the law. If a country wants independence, why not let it have it's own government and laws?

Anyway thanks for the welcome! LOl Take it sleazy!:D

    Bottom line. Roma = crap.

Nothing to contribute to society. Thieving bastards. F**k them to hell.

Nothing anyone can say will cause me to deviate from this view. They don't get a job like the rest of us and just make a living out of robbing, begging and selling ****ty roses outside nightclubs.

    So there.

its our own fault for letting them in
way too soft as a nation
    seen as a soft touch
encourages more of them to come and try scams here as their is little or no punishment

check this thread to see that even when they are convicted of a scam they dont get punished :

This thread got turned into a nationality row because I was accused of using this "urban myth" to peddle my anti Roma hate spiel. But i think its more than conclusive that this actually goes on and its main perpetrators are of Roma decent.

Also on a side note, the joke about sending them to England +100 for that. The English government did this exact thing to Ireland about a decade ago. They approached new age hippie communes and offered to pay them 3 years benefits in a lump sum if they emigrated to Ireland. Hence the massive influx of crusty dole monkeys during the 90's.

    Were they from Ireland originally?
