Is Cannon the bee's knees of photography?

Just got into this forum and its pretty interesting. Im studying graphic design so I had to invest in some real slr camera equipment.
After hearing a lot of advice from friends and photographers in various media art departments, I opted away from the typical Cannon range. A well knowledged media lecturer who specialises in photography informed us that even the most expensive Cannon will register (expose?) dark areas with a slight tinge of green. Almost unnoticable.

Personally, I opted for the olympus e410, a starting point but a fairly expensive investment none the less. Im finding it an excellent piece of equipment. And amazingly enough, im acually able to adapt the it with my Dads 26 year old zuiko oympus lenses, which made it an even better buy (20", 50" and a 300" Macro + Telescope zoom. All manual.) Within such a short rane of time my knowledge has infinitely increased. Although Olympus is a strongly recognised trademark, does anyone else have a preference towards the less associated brands?

There are a few oly users round here, who love their cameras. There's a huge amount of canon users, a growing number of nikonites, and possibly one or two pentax. Then we have the holga fans, and some other MF film geeks :) There's lomo-ists, people who like to pull polaroid prints apart and transfer them onto paper, and I'm sure we've had a spate of home made pinhole cameras too...

Cannon users tend to do a different kind of shooting though, which involves using large metal balls to knock down castle walls

Never heard of the green tinge in the shadows, and i've heard of a lot of pixel peeping in my time. I'd be very surprised if that were true given the demands of the photographers who use canon gear for all kinds of applications, and that it hasn't been more widely reported.

But what's even more fun, is going out and taking pictures :D

Actually no, scrap that. I'd rather admire the craftsmanship of the black gaffer tape on my holga ;)

Seriously tim, hope you don't think we're taking the mince. Please, post some shots when you get out and about, and hopefully you can come and join us at the next meet at the end of february or something. We're all very nice*.

*Except Rymus who takes exception to being labelled as nice...

I was all set to say "actually no, Canon are not the bees knees" and then I read your post :)

I also have an E-410, and some old OM lenses as well, I don't think I'll get the OM adaptor though. Happy to use those on my OM camera(s)

Hmmm.. think you may have been given a bum steer with the advice there. Canon and Nikon would be the two most used brands professionally. A quick google image search for photos of paparazi will show you what I mean...

I chose Canon when I went digital, but I have my beloved Pentax-mount film camera which I was just mulling over taking myself to botanics with on Wednesday.

Welcome along :) Post up some stuff when you get a chance.

Green tinge? I know the RAW mosaic is green but this applies to all cameras.

    Pentax all the way :)
Yes, we are in minority, but we know why ;)

I always wondered what that green was in my recent photos. I thought it was the grass from the pitch, but maybe I've been wrong.

a three hundred inch lens would be some sight to behold.

Yeah, true. The largest Canon have is a 1200mm lens.

Those must be some lenses you have.

We are not all the same, and we do not all have the same requirements from a camera. I do not get this constant tribalistic my brand is better than yours nonsense. It's a bit like supporting a football team.

The truth is that the camera equipment you have in your hands is less than half the story. Mostly, what matters is what you see and how you go about transferring it onto film. The camera does not make the photographer but in many cases, the photgrapher makes the camera.

I have a Canon 350D with a bundle of Sigma lenses. I also have a couple of Olympus cameras and related lenses. What makes my photographs my photographs is how I make them, not the camera I use to take them.

    Most good photographers understand this.

most 'good' photographers in the past and present day used/use the best possible equipment available to them... brand is irrelevant, the tool itself is not. I wouldn't take the whole Nazikon/Canon thing so seriously Calina... it's only people ribbing each other for a bit of a laugh.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,219 ✭✭✭Calina

yes but to be blunt I'm getting sick of it. it seems to come up every 15 minutes and it wore thin at least 12 months ago for me. I find the "choose me a point and shoot for under 150E" threads to be more engaging at this stage.

in any case, "best" is still subjective.

brand niggling exists in every walk of life... just don't read it if you're not interested in it

    apple/microsoft
    bluray/hd
    ferrari/porsche
    maybeline/clinique
    indesign/quark

it's the nature of the marketing beast

the original poster titled the thread: "Is Cannon the bee's knees of photography?" after all...
