Im not saying your father is a bad person Tauren.

If someone ate krap as a habit id would happily say they are a filthy person.
No, you are saying he is a filthy person. Not much better. As for your second sentence...what the hell happned there?

Of course I would prefer him not to smoke - but i also have the ability to see past the bad habbit and not judge him as a bad/filthy/horrible person just beacuse of it. I chose to look at how he provides for his family, how he treats them - things like that. He doesn't smoke around the kids, not in a room they use in the house, so he is not passing the habbit on to them directly.

Smoking=stupid. its a fact, there is no point in arguing against this! It serves no purpose and tends to kill people every now and then.. so all in all not a good thing.
I dont know why you wounldnt want your Dad to quit for his own sake?
As I have just said, i would prefer if he quit, but I just don't see the sense in seeing him as a terrible or filthy person just because he smokes.

Its the same with my mothers husband. He smokes, but i can't see him as a bad person for it. He gets up for work in the morning at 7am, gets home from his second job at about 11pm some nights, over christmas he wasn't getting back till 1am. He works damn hard all day, and then come the weekend, he works damn hard again. He has little free time to himself - but he always makes himself available to ehlp others be it DIY round the house, on cars collecting recyclables and a hole heap of stuff like that. Yet because he smokes I should view him as, or accept others viewing him as, a filthy person. Not going to happen.

I didnt make the filthy remark.

My only point is that people make the choice to smoke ... which is obviously a stupid thing to do.

In the case of your father he doesnt smoke around kids so based on the thread title he is not part of the problem we are discussing.

    Woa Woa Folks,

We're not discussing whether smoking is a bad habit, going to kill you etc. That's a whole other thread for some other day. Smoking around kids, a bad thing or not a problem?!

Maybe the OP should add in a poll so we can clearly guage people's opinions.

Exactly the same with over weight people, but it doesn't bother me if they choose to put their health at risk thats their business.

No you didn't, but you commented on one of my comments that was a directly reply to View Profile effectively saying all smokers are filthy people. I don't like people smoking round kids - for all the reasons mention. I support the ban on smoking in public places for basically the same reasons. But that one comment from View Profile got to me, which prompted my reply. The replies to my post and subsequent posts have been answered along the same train of thought.

I agrre to a point padi and this arguement gets thrown up by smokers each time a thread like this is posted. The thing in this case is that if I eat a BigMac beside a toddler everyday its not gonna give the kid health problems.

Anyone else get really really annoyed when they see adults puffing away on cigarettes when they have kids in their cars with them?

Its one of my pet hates, and I think it should be illegal for this to happen. After all they are physically damaging their kids health. Grrrrrr

I'm sorry, but get off your high horse. The way those kids are brought up is absolutely none of your business. If you want to make it illegal for the parents to smoke in the presence of their children, then do something about that.

As for the people saying "What if the parents were kicking them?". You would report them to a government body, however, seeing as smoking is not against the law there is nothing you can do - or should do, so stop getting annoyed with things that are so petty and meaningless and move on with your life.

They're not your kids, you're not responsible for them, and if their parents want to smoke while they are in the car they have every right to do so. What next? Bringing kids to McDonalds will be illegal because of health issues? Letting kids watch cartoons and play video games will be illegal because it doesn't challenge their minds?

Once again. Grow up and use some common sense. This thread is absolutely ridiculous, and any replies to my post will be because the poster is trying to win an agruement.

pid(), do you agree that smoking around children is bad for the childrens health. That it can cause serious health problems and lead to conditions that can serious affect their quality of life?

And btw, are you a smoker by any chance?

If you look at the options just above your thread title there is an option for Thread Tools, the poll option is in there.

    I'm not a smoker.

Well, if long term smoking for an adult is bad, then I guess that smoking around a child who's lungs are still developing might be bad. However, if the kid isn't mine, I have no right to criticise a parent for smoking around their kid. It is their kid, their responsibility and none of my business or your business.

If you walked over and knocked on their car window, and said "Put the fag out, you have a child in the car". You would be told to go fuck yourself, and not because the people in the car are skangers, but because it is none of your business.

The beating a child in public analogy is crazy as well.

It has nothing to do with you, just like the war in Iraq. Do you get annoyed every time you hear someone dying over there? If you do, I have to say that you really need to disassociate yourself with this sort of crap or you'll end up very annoyed with life. If you don't get annoyed over it, I have to ask why are you getting annoyed over this, then?

Yes but twice you have mentioned the risks smokers put on themselves, im sure they are fully aware of them.I dont see what this has to do with the point of the thread of passive smoking. If someone risks their health by smoking its no different to someone eating a bigmac everyday.Either way you risk premature death.

I smoke but would never smoke in a confined space with a non smoker. So yeah people that do this to kids are **** but as pointed out what ya gonna do about it?
Likewise. A few relatives, though, do go outside when smoking if the child is in the room.

    =-=

Oh, and I've gone through a car window, and in a coma for 3 days, 10 years before I started smoking. My point, just because I smoke, doesn't mean that I won't be killed before it effects me.

Whilst I do somewhat agree pid() that it is none of our business what others get up to - I think the point of the thread is peoples opinions on it. Just because it might not be our business doesn't mean we can't express our personal views. And your view is just as valid. I don't smoke but if I did, I would make sure not to smoke around my children (if I had any) because that's their choice to make when they are older, if they choose to smoke or not.
Everything any parent does with/around the child is potentially something someone else might not agree with, but that's everyones personal choice.
I wouldn't go up to someone who was smoking around their child n say 'oi - what are you doing?' -- because it's nothing to do with me. If it were a close friend / family member - I would consider saying something yes.

I am a smoker, but smoking in the car kills me, the smell.
When I was kid I used to the smoke in the car.

There is nothing positive about smoking.

Sure there is. It feels good, is relaxing, etc......

That's like saying there's nothing good about alcohol. Just because it has serious health implications does not mean it doesn't serve a purpose.

Well that's a different matter entirely. Both smoking and eating Big Macs every day will affect the kid if (as is likely) you die at a young age. So by that rationale they're equally selfish. Of course, smoking in the child's presence will affect them detrimentally whereas eating junk food will not. But smoking per se is no more stupid than eating junk food all the time.

Does anyone have stats on how much of an effect car, industry, etc., pollution has on people's health? That's a common argument espoused by smokers. If the effect of car pollution is significant, then it's a bit hypocritical to complain about second hand smoking and then jump into your SUV.

Just wondering, cos I do not have the numbers on it...

I think it is crazy that a driver is allowed to smoke, i.e. legal to hold a ignited article in their hand that could fall into their lap at any time- while holding a mobile phone is illegal.

Exactly the same with over weight people, but it doesn't bother me if they choose to put their health at risk thats their business.
You might end up paying more tax to take care of them. Same with "victims" of passive smoking. They are in effect posioning people around them, be they adults or kids. If you want to say passive smoking is fine, they at best they are irritating some people around them, and I already know the reply- get out and walk so... A infant has no choice, other forms of child abuse are illegal, this probably will be in the future and in generations to come people will find it odd saying "well years ago they let you smoke in front of kids".

I was mentioning it in the pub the other night, how 18year olds who are only beginning to go to pubs now must think it a great novelty to go to a pub abroad where they can smoke.

Adults make their own choice to smoke. By smoking in a car where there are children, they are exposing young, not fully developed lungs to all the damage cigarettes can do. How can anyone who proclaims to love their children expose them to this? Its not as if they don't know the damage cigarettes can do, there is enough publicity about the damage they do in every paper you pick up these days.

Well they are already heavily taxed on their habit so im sure they pay plenty towards their death.Cakes, buns, burgers and excercise ain't too heavily taxed but i still have to pay for fatties with heart problems.Anyway tax is spent on plenty of things that don't effect me directly but i still have to pay it.

    Jaysus, Mary (Harney).
I saw these complete **** in a car today.

[MH]What makes you say they were ****?

Well, they were smoking and they had kids in the car.

[MH] Shocking stuff indeed. Do you intend to do anything about it? You do know I'm the minister for health, right? Talking to me about it might help.

Nah, fúck it. I'm gonna go on boards.ie and bitch and moan about it. Sure if you did anything about it, what would I have left to complain about?

One of my pet hates, smokers who expose their kids to their poison, esp in a confined space like a Car are Scum of the Earth.:(

Each to their own, tbh. Some people smoke, some people don't.

What I really find more disturbing is the amount of people who drive around with their small children unrestrained in cars. I was in Dundalk on Sunday, waiting to turn onto the M1. In the car in front of me there were two wee boys and a girl, I'd say the oldest was 8, and they were standing up on the back seat waving at me and sticking their tongues out. When the light went green and their parent started to pull away, the kids all shot downwards with the force of the car pulling off at a fairly moderate pace.

Imagine the damage an unrestrained child could do if you were to crash your car at 50 or 60 mph? Ferociously irresponsible and it drives (pardon the pun) me crazy.

This ****s me right off!! Mother used to do it when I was young and I hated her for it.

The world is a dangerous place.

My parents used to make me walk to school, even when it was cold out. I could have gotten really sick of picked up by a paedophile.
They also fed me poultry (salmonella), beef (CJD), Pork (food poisoning) and other crazy stuff like vegetables (bug **** and piss, even when they are properly washed).

They also told me not to be worried about flies. Everyone knows they are disease carrying bastards.

Sometimes I would play football on the green at the front of my house. Imaginew the injuries I could have sustained?
Some of my friends broke bones, but they still allowed us to play. Looking back on it now, I, and my friends, should have been taken away from these negligent parents.

These days I'm facing death. I've no idea what is going to kill me, but it could be anything.
For this, I completely blame my parents. They bore me and now I'm going to die. It could even be old age that kills me. I hear that kills a lot of people.

We must act now to stop these menaces (children and death).
    Something must be done now.

I suggest that for the next 100 years or so, we put a complete stop to childbirth. After that time, someone will surely have found a way to cheat death.

I'm capable of having an open mind and not following mob mentality.

I'm not the one baying for the blood of smokers. I know that smoking is a disgusting habit, but I also know that the world will not end if someone smokes in front of their kids.

Theres a big difference between smoking in front of your kids and smoking in a confined area with them.
