You can only call yourself a true Dubliner if you were born between the North and [South Circular] Roads?

Total nonsense. Nobody can choose where they are born. Half the people born in Dublin's maternity hospitals are not Dubliners, let alone true blue Dubs.

"Dublin was originally called Dubh Linn meaning Black Pool? The pool to which the name referred is the oldest known in Northern Europe and currently forms the centre-piece of the penguin enclosure in Dublin Zoo."
I knew the Dubh Linn stuff, but the penguins bit? Please tell me it's true!:D

Might got to the zoo today so I'll check it out for you.

But I always though Dubh Linn referred to the Liffey entrance were the civic offices are

The first traffic lights in Dublin were installed at the junction of Merrion Square and Clare Street, on August 27, 1937

Dublin's oldest traffic light is situated beside the Renault garage in Clontarf? The light, which is still in full working order, was installed in 1893 outside the home of Fergus Mitchell who was the owner of the first car in Ireland.

    Hmmmm.....

Little wonder the world has such problems, when people from one country can rewrite the history of another and present it as fact  Imagine what American schoolbooks are like? We were shown some back in college and they were hilariously terrifying/ terrifyingly hilarious. I'm off to try and find a link!

Isn't Dubh Linn under Dublin Castle?
    Quick check...
In the area occupied by the present Dubhlinn (Castle) Gardens and Coach House, there was a sheltered harbour or dark pool, (on the Poddle), known as the Dubhlinn (dubh = black in Irish), from which Dublin gets its name.

Can someone explain what this means? Whats the c Road?
Me was born in the old Coombe.

Anyway it's meant to be between the canals, as they are much older than the roads.

I always thought that the "black pool" in question referred to the trickle lake in the Chimpanzee enclosure in Dublin Zoo.

The pool refers to a pool in the river Poddle (now underground, streets were built over it) near where it joins the Liffey, round about Wood Quay.

There was a well, a medieval site of eh worship ruined when the Trinity Provost's garden was built, that's what the Trinity confusion is.

Dubh Linn is that park by Dublin Castle that is shaped like a circle with all the footpaths in a pattern.

    What?

Dubh is clearly the Irish for Black.

    http://www.irish-sayings.com/cats/irishwords/colours/

Black as in dirty perhaps, It's probably not a direct translation.
