Tesco DVD Recordables

Saw these in Tesco, DVD+R and -R, just wondering are they any good and if they are good for the money, will they last etc? Not sure of the best place to put this thread but anyway:)

wonder what their shelf life is though. I remember looking at CD-R's years ago and they were rated in years shelf life.

The 2 euro shop has 4 packs for €2 in both DVD+R and DVD-R, Tried the DVD-R and they all worked perfectly

I got a 25 spindle of the Tesco -R as an early Christmas present. I have just used 3 or 4 but no problems so far.

See I'm not too sure if the problems occur when recording, or a few months/years down the line on bad quality discs. I know I've burnt cheap CD's in the past which wont play properly now.

Bulk bought these a couple of years ago at 4 discs for €1 (plus BOGOF

) They are excellent no problems, burn under Ubuntu and Windows perfectly. Never got any duds. I saw a Tesco 50 pack DVD-R spindle for €15 recently. (Didn't get it because I've loads of discs.) Maybe they were just selling those off, anyway I'll post back here if I see them again.

Jeepers,

I had the opposite with these, gave me dogs abuse, bout 3 or 4 failed out of a pack of 10, couldve been a bogey batch, got the ones in Aldi, no problems at all....

I bought one of those DVD-R packs. Won't burn on my PC (Sony drive) or on a Dell. Will burn OK on a philips and sony DVD video recorders.

Argos are doing a Buy one get one Free on Memorex DVD spindles. So I got 50 for €16. No problems burning Memorex at all.

Currys were doing Verbatium Photo Printable DVD+R/-R 25 disk spindles for 12.99 recently. I find them excellent disks.

Harvey Norman have much better blanks for less money , they have 16x Verbatim R+ and R- for €9.99 , i suppose if i was really stuck i'd give the tesco ones a go but for anything important i'd use verbatim or for really important stuff Taiyo Yuden

The DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+/-RW formats are different formats for recording data on to DVD discs. When DVD recorder drives and recordable DVD discs came out a few years ago these were competing standards. Unfortunately this led to some early drives being compatible with only one standard (i.e. DVD-R or DVD+R.) DVD+/-RW is the standard for re-writable discs, ones that can be erased and written to again, they're usually more expensive.

Today virtually all new computer DVD recording drives and most home DVD recorders support the DVD+ and - formats. Some drives are capable of using re-writable DVD discs, DVD+/-RW. But to be on the safe side don't assume your drive will support all the formats. It's best to check that the symbol DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+/-RW are on the drive you intend using, and if only one symbol appears, buy DVD discs that match that specification.

If Argos are doing Memorex discs for €16 for 50 then that's the deal to go for. Unless of course Tesco bring out the 4 discs for a €1 Value packs in the New Year (and then offer a BOGOF)

12.5 cent a disc methinks!! I couldn't find the Argos Memorex BOGOF offer on their web site but I found the Memorex DVD+R 25 pack spindle listed.

It's in their Christmas offers broadsheet. Offer is good until the 24th Dec.

Offer applies to 25's and 50's spindles both +R and -R

That works out at 27.5 cent per disc, if you buy the Memorex 50 pack. The only catch is the offer finishes Monday, then Argos end the BOGOF.

Since I have a +/- compatible recorder, is there any difference between + and - quality wise? I think I heard there are more players compatible with - so I should probably just get -?

Probably can use either- but minus tends to be the more compatible standard.

What does the speed write such as DVD-R x8 DVD-RW x 6 mean. I will be writing to DVD. Is it a speed of DVD and do I need to get the speed right as well the DVD - part

The speed on the disc is the maximum speed at which it writes, irrespective of what speed the DVD-writer can write at. If you've got a DVD writer that can write at 16 speed and you put a 4 or 8 speed disc in it, it will only write at 4 or 8, not 16.

The faster the disc speed, the more expensive they are.

What I haven't yet tried is to write a 16 speed disc in an 8 speed drive. Has anyone tried that?

If you've got a DVD writer that can write at 16 speed and you put a 4 or 8 speed disc in it, it will only write at 4 or 8, not 16.

And it won't cause any problems just be slower?

Bought a spindle of 25 Verbatim DVD-R in Dunnes today for €9.99. They also had DVD+R for the same price.
