Cool :) wonder what their shelf life is though. I remember looking at CD-R's years ago and they were rated in years shelf life.

Wouldn't think they would be much good for important backups

I got a 25 spindle of the Tesco -R as an early Christmas present. I have just used 3 or 4 but no problems so far.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

See I'm not too sure if the problems occur when recording, or a few months/years down the line on bad quality discs. I know I've burnt cheap CD's in the past which wont play properly now.

Bulk bought these a couple of years ago at 4 discs for €1 (plus BOGOF :D) They are excellent no problems, burn under Ubuntu and Windows perfectly. Never got any duds. I saw a Tesco 50 pack DVD-R spindle for €15 recently. (Didn't get it because I've loads of discs.) Maybe they were just selling those off, anyway I'll post back here if I see them again.

Can I embarass myself here and ask whats the difference between +R and -R? Probably obvious but I honestly don't know

    Jeepers,

I had the opposite with these, gave me dogs abuse, bout 3 or 4 failed out of a pack of 10, couldve been a bogey batch, got the ones in Aldi, no problems at all....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 166 ✭✭mgadget

I bought one of those DVD-R packs. Won't burn on my PC (Sony drive) or on a Dell. Will burn OK on a philips and sony DVD video recorders.

Argos are doing a Buy one get one Free on Memorex DVD spindles. So I got 50 for €16. No problems burning Memorex at all.

No problem Rafc, no embarrassment needed! :o

The DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+/-RW formats are different formats for recording data on to DVD discs. When DVD recorder drives and recordable DVD discs came out a few years ago these were competing standards. Unfortunately this led to some early drives being compatible with only one standard (i.e. DVD-R or DVD+R.) DVD+/-RW is the standard for re-writable discs, ones that can be erased and written to again, they're usually more expensive.

Today virtually all new computer DVD recording drives and most home DVD recorders support the DVD+ and - formats. Some drives are capable of using re-writable DVD discs, DVD+/-RW. But to be on the safe side don't assume your drive will support all the formats. It's best to check that the symbol DVD-R, DVD+R and DVD+/-RW are on the drive you intend using, and if only one symbol appears, buy DVD discs that match that specification.

If Argos are doing Memorex discs for €16 for 50 then that's the deal to go for. Unless of course Tesco bring out the 4 discs for a €1 Value packs in the New Year (and then offer a BOGOF) :D 12.5 cent a disc methinks!! I couldn't find the Argos Memorex BOGOF offer on their web site but I found the Memorex DVD+R 25 pack spindle listed.

It's in their Christmas offers broadsheet. Offer is good until the 24th Dec.

Offer applies to 25's and 50's spindles both +R and -R

That works out at 27.5 cent per disc, if you buy the Memorex 50 pack. The only catch is the offer finishes Monday, then Argos end the BOGOF.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 20,844 ✭✭✭✭cormie

Might for for the Argos offer, chanx :)

Since I have a +/- compatible recorder, is there any difference between + and - quality wise? I think I heard there are more players compatible with - so I should probably just get -?

And if it says only DVD RW with no + or - how do you tell?

And if it says only DVD RW with no + or - how do you tell?

Probably can use either- but minus tends to be the more compatible standard.

    Specs from Amazon

    4200 Optical Drive Optical Drive Type: DVD+-RW/+-R DL/RAM Optical Drive Fitting: Built-in Optical Drive Speed Read: CD x24 CD-R x24 CD-RW x24 DVD x8 DVD-R DL x6 DVD-R x8 DVD-RW x6 DVD+R DL x6 DVD+R x8 DVD+RW x8 DVD-RAM x5 Optical Drive Speed Write: CD-R x24 CD-RW x16 DVD-R DL x4 DVD-R x8 DVD-RW x6 DVD+R DL x4 DVD+R x8 DVD+RW x8 DVD-RAM x5

What does the speed write such as DVD-R x8 DVD-RW x 6 mean. I will be writing to DVD. Is it a speed of DVD and do I need to get the speed right as well the DVD - part

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,230 ✭✭✭✭ejmaztec

The speed on the disc is the maximum speed at which it writes, irrespective of what speed the DVD-writer can write at. If you've got a DVD writer that can write at 16 speed and you put a 4 or 8 speed disc in it, it will only write at 4 or 8, not 16.

The faster the disc speed, the more expensive they are.

What I haven't yet tried is to write a 16 speed disc in an 8 speed drive. Has anyone tried that?

And it won't cause any problems just be slower?

Bought a spindle of 25 Verbatim DVD-R in Dunnes today for €9.99. They also had DVD+R for the same price.

So are Verbatim the best choice of what's been posted so far? Are these better than the argos memorex deal?

    Just slower.

If you ever get any from Lidl, make sure you pick up the higher speed ones. I picked up some on one occasion, thinking they were 8 speed, when in fact they were 4. The packaging was identical (apart from the speed rating). I was wondering why it was taking twice as long as usual to burn a DVD:o

I've used a few different computers & DVD writers in my time and I don't buy DVD-R discs anymore because I seem to get more coasters with them regardless of the brand name. Perhaps I'm unlucky and/or stupid but that's been my experience. Most writeable DVDs are OK. The only spectacularly bad ones I've encountered are the Kodak ones they're selling off in Tesco as a discontinued line.

you'll find various reviews on the internet
eg. this seems a good guide
    http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

i've had trouble burning cheap discs before, i think pcline and some type sold in maplin.

for me verbatum seem to work well, but i wouldn't worry too much about buying a brand like memorex. The type of drive is a big factor too. I've had discs burn fine in one drive at full speed and burn less reliably in another drive.

If not in a hurry I'll usually burn disc at x8 or x12 instead of x16. Just makes me feel more confident that there won't be any problems. If you're always going to burn the discs max speed or above the max speed if you have a drive that allows it then i'd say go for a brand with good reputation/reviews like verbatum, tdk etc

About a year ago I and 2 friends returned a load of cd-r's. They were 80% coasters.

This was when a ten pack was less than a fifth of a 50 pack, if you remember that offer.

They seem to have changed supplier since then based on the above comments.

If you can get Verbatim buy them they are one of the best DVD-R or +R that you can get and will certainly cause you less issues and last longer then the memorex or Tescos/pound shop deals.

A coaster is one which does not record? Would you know that when doing the record or the write to? I am talking of doing back ups.

Depending on the software or hardware you are using to do the record- you will normally get an error message and the disk spat out at you along with a request to insert a new disk. It doesn't just continue and then you find out later when it comes to restore that all-important backup (though this does happen occassionally too- as I discovered :( )

See also http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm. I had made restore disks on memorex when read the above so got TDK, now have two lots of restore disks. Repeat:No idea how true it is

I've had nothing but trouble with the Verbatim DVD DLs.

Although different, I think I've only ever had one dodgy black ever from Tesco after buying 50 over the years.
