I was driving down drumcondra road on saturday and (what looked like) a roma (she wasnt wearing the long dress, which is why i cant say for sure but physically looked the same) was standing int he middle of the road going up and down cars with a sign saying 'PLEASE HELP, I WANT TO GO HOME'.

If she was a roma then thats actually pretty clever. Of course do you think she actually would go home if she made more money with that sign ?

On an unrelated note I just passed an old roma woman at lunchtime with some big issue magazines who looked to be in the pangs of childbirth as I was passing by. Course once I had passed by she calmed down again and the look of agony left her all of a sudden. Thats top gun acting gary !

Because soem smart arse hippy student decided it was unconstitutional to deny people the right to beg. He took it to court and the law was overturned. Thanks alot, students!

Its always the college know it all hippies - they are the worse kind (seriously).

I think that high street banks will have to stop having ATM's outside their premises. When I was in the states during the summer, most banks in New York had a lobby area where you swiped your ATM card to get in. AFAIK, The only branch in the city centre which implements such a system is AIB on Grafton St.

It would suffice if banks/shops kept their atm's clear.
As i understand it, a business' can insist that people move on, if they are in front of their premesis.

A business technically owns the area of street immediatley in front of it. At least that's the story i've used when i worked security!

As for the hippie bashing, i'm one of em. You're quite entitled to ask me for money, and i'm equally entitled to tell you where to go. If you become agressive or threatning, there are allready laws to deal with that.

It's the pushy type that get to me.

When I'm in town, if I pass someone sitting quietly with a cup I'll nearly always give them spare change I have in my pocket. I'd usually pass them first though and then go back once they're not abusive.

Get in my face at an ATM, at the Luas, coming out of the bank, in my car etc, and you fúck right off.

I was thinking of this thread as I went out for lunch. I was waiting for my OH on a corner where there are two people begging, what I'm guessing where a mother and son. The young boy arrived back from (presumably) the shops with a big handful of chocolate bars and sweets in his hand. He then tried to beg for money from me with a mouthful and pocketful of sweets! I guess that's where you're money goes people!

Most are sitting there pissed or High. Just because they are not abusive then, does not mean they are not abusive when the shakes start.

If any1 stops near my car or crosses my path, other than at lights for them to walk, they are taking their lives in their own hands.

Move it or loose it (or at least have the bejesus frightened out of ya)

That guy turns my stomach, he hobbles up to the lights, takes off his runner and rolls up the leg of his pants to expose his gimpy foot. Sickening

There used to be a guy like this near Newlands Cross in the evening, He had this weird arm-for-a-leg thing which he kept propped up by a crutch. Felt sorry for him at first but it gets annoying when they approach your car every single day looking for money.

Is there any irish homeless that walk the traffic begging? As the thread through here seems to be Romas?

*just picking up on a thread - nothing more?

Well if they're pissed, you can usually smell the booze a mile away anyway. If I smell anything, or spy a can beside them I'll walk on by.

I just figure the quieter ones are more likely to be genuine cases.

The guy at Heuston St. looks Irish.

Any darker than a weekend in Spain with gold teeth (and probably a missing limb or other handicap) and its a safe bet they're Roma.

YOU giving them money is part of the reason they're making life miserable for other people. If people stopped handing over cash to these bastards they'd soon go off and get a job or something. These people(and thier kids) can never have any idea of the value of money or the concept of working for it if do-gooders will continue to pay them for doing nothing.

i dont think there is such a law I think it comes down to personal responsibility in this fine country

You can actually be fined 25e for jaywalking under Irish law

    Is e-begging okay?

Here mister, giz a tenner. Twenty will do if you've no change. I can break a fifty, gwan, giz something.
I need it to swaddle my gimpy leg in oily rags to stop the rain getting in.
If it helps my case, I can post pictures of a random, I mean my gimpy leg.

Did a beggar at traffic lights tell you that? Did they try and collect it?

If so, you may have been scammed!

anyone see the bloke in the wheelchair around the city centre in a wheelchair with a sihn saying "help me plaese i cant handel myself", the poor chap cant even spell properly. maybe he'l go and get some spelling lessons with our money?

That would be fine during the day. You can't expect businesses / banks to have someone guard their premises on a full time basis after closing time / overnight.

I also notice in the run up to Xmas that these guys and girls are working later and later. If only they would put the same amount of effort into a real job.

The romas on o'connell st are by far the worst. holding "thier" children (i presume they use a rotation system), in thier rags and putting on a sad face so they can have my hard earned money that i worked for and put effort in to get a job also. Any one notice that old woman on henry/o'connell st who's back is always bent as if shes trying to touch her toes :D
NEVER GIVE THEM MONEY, is what i seen in the daily mirror last week from a charity rep
not quite sure what charity but's one that helps IRISH homeless

Your responsible for these parasites aggressively begging from the people who don't immediately come accross with money.

My OH is terrified of that girl on the M50/M1. Twice she's spat on her car.

I have never seen this woman be a danger to traffic as she seems to wait at the island at the side of the road, then when the lights are red, then go up to windows. I dont agree with aggresive begging or spitting, and I can only judge a character from I see and know at the time (i.e. I was never aware of her agressive nature and spitting till now). The poor woman is disabled for life, and I feel I have a moral obligation to help folks like this even in a small way.

There used to be a guy with sandy hair who wore army trousers at the n7 exit on the m50 and sometimes at Newlands Cross with a gimped leg. I always thought it was genuine until I walked down O Connell St one day and by chance I saw the ****er walking around without any trouble.

That is actually a young girl. Seriously, check it out sometime. After a while, she straightens up to stretch her back and she's about 17.

As for the boy with the gimp, checkout his father and younger brother watching you from the wall at Tesco's. That guy turns my stomach, he hobbles up to the lights, takes off his runner and rolls up the leg of his pants to expose his gimpy foot. Sickening.
Never mind that, about two weeks ago at lunchtime I saw yer man begging, looked over and there was a Roma woman of indistinguishable age squatting down and going go the toilet at the aforementioned wall.

There's a bunch of Roma men that drop the 'party' off and and pick them up every working day in a UK reg car. I've seen the same guys several times in the drinks isle of Tescos Clarehall musing over which bottle of whiskey to buy of an evening.

I would strongly urge anyone who felt pressurised into giving these people money at the Clarehall junction to think twice.
