That's what he is using in the video as he says the software will be open source so should be software available with it, we all know tom tom and route software works in mobile devices its just a matter of implementing it to the iPhone.
Nice device, but just a thought on it. When you get your long and lat coordinates and pipe it to google maps, won't you need to be connected to wifi for the maps to load, or at least EDGE. So if you are lost in the wilderness its not much good unless you have a map with you or is there a way to preload some google maps on your iphone device?

The point thebiggestjim is making is, the Iphone uses Google Maps, which are not saved in the Iphones memory, rather the device needs an internet connection to download them, in real time. Contrary to this, a GPS Sat Nav system has all it's maps saved within it. thebiggestjim makes the valid point, that is, what is the use of a GPS device for the Iphone, when the Iphone does not have any saved maps? The question is, will it use Google Maps and download them in real time over Edge, as the driver drives along? This would be an expensive and unreliable solution. My guess is that the GPS device for the Iphone will not use Google Maps at all, rather it will use third party software which has totally separate, ready installed maps, that are likely to be Navteq or Teleatlas (here's hoping the former, at least for Ireland). Only time will tell..

If you read my post properly that's exactly what I said.

Nope, you mentioned nothing about maps, and that is the point that's unclear. Even now.

well even so there are open source maps available but with the dev kit being available in sep hopefully tom tom and the likes will make it available for the iphone. That is one feature on my list that would top the iphone off!

Agreed. Though I suspect the current Iphone will never be as feature-rich as we all would like. It probably will, however, be the most "hackable". After all, if the current Iphone has everything (or close to everything) consumers want, there would be little scope for improvement / development in future Iphone models (future technological advancements aside). Indeed, I suspect Apple have purposely left out some seemingly obvious and simple additions to the Iphone's features, for this very reason.

I have read through all 86 pages of this thread and I'm still baffled!!! I have a couple of very quick (and probably simple!) questions to wizards like PowerHouse Dan etc!!

I bought a new iPhone in Belfast yesterday. Firmware 1.1.2 and new bootloader. I know I can't unlock this until unlock is released but in the meantime, what can I do with it?

    1. Can I downgrade it and simply use it as iPod Touch until unlock is released?
    2. If so, how? (if someone could pin point the easiest link, that would be great)
    3. If I do this, will it make unlocking (when unlock finally comes out) more complicated? I am a complete newbie!!!
    4. I presume this is the thread to watch over the coming days to find out when unlock is out and where I can get it?

Thanks for taking the time in answering these (silly, I know) questions. But my brain is currently mush after reading through ALL 86 pages!!!

I don't believe you read all 86 pages but here is the answer anyhoo

    1 yes

2 www.hacktheiphone.com (downgrade to 1.11 jailbreak the phone run OKtoprep update to 1.12 jailbreak again) ignore the anysim stuff doesn't apply to you as you have a 4.6 bootloader phone.

Edit here is an easier link for you

    http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18284

3 unlocking if/when it comes about will involve activating and jailbreaking the phone and even if you go for hardware solution like turbosim or stealthsim you will still need to activate and jailbreak so no it should not make it more difficult

4 yes here is a good place

cdebru summed it up really, Here is another guide: http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/showthread.php?t=18284

a Software unlocked for ootb 1.1.2 widely depends if apple upgrade the bootloader, but why would they do that when it stops hackers unlocking so i doubt they will which will mean no software unlock, I no geoshot (the teenager in us who was first to unlock his phone is working on trying to bypass and hack itunes and unlock it that way, With any hardware method as cdebru said your phone needs to be jailbroken.

And here is a good place myself or cbebru would usually post some news here is the site forum the iphone dev have http://www.hackint0sh.org/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=123.

has anyone fixed the smtp password disappearing issue when you setup GMAIL using IMAP, i.e smtp password keeps reverting back to optional which in turn means you cant send email's, apparently 1.1.2 fixes the bug, but I'm on FW1.1.1 (original unlocked 1.0.2 phones)

or if you buy one in uk ya they will be locked but you can buy a little bit of hardware you attached to your sim that will let you use any sim with it.

Powerhousedan, does that stealth-sim really work? how much will you be retailing them for?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

Yes the Stealth Sim works for both Uk/Usa phones and will more than likely work for 1.1.3 phone also, its basicly the same as turbo sim which has worked with all firmware upgrade. We have no finalised a price yet but it will be cheaper than the other options available, Might try and sort out a Boards.ie discount no promises though :)

I received an email from them following an enquiry I made about their sim. A couple of days later I was copied on an email with what looks like every other person that ever made an enquiry to them. Basically anyone that was on that email who ordered one of their sims has replied to everyone else CC'd on the original email telling of their experiences with iphonesimfreer. Every one of them so far has said that the Sims dont work and thisevening, the guy from iphonesimfreer replied in terrible english, saying he'd offer a replacement or refund to anyone experiencing problems. They seem like complete cowboys though and I'd say trying to get a refund would be a difficult

    @ PowerHouseDan

Hey dan, looking at one of your earlier posts ..... do you believe that there will NOT be a software unlock for 1.1.2 with the new bootloader?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

Yup thats what i was talking about.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

The thing is if apple update the Bootloader then there WILL be a unlock but if they dont update it then it wont be possible to unlock like now, So why would apple update it if they dont need to and success in blocking unlocking?Thats why myself and unlockthatiphone are looking for supply a hardware version that also wont void your warrenty :)

That eBay search won't narrow down enough for you. Try this one. :)

Tip: Be wary of iphones being advertised as 1.1.1, downgraded from 1.1.2 - there is no software unlock for these yet.
