Really decent chap in real life it must be said... but I wouldn't hold much credence with his rugby commentary

Well he can be annoying at times .. he's paid to have an opinion, so he's bound to get up some peoples snot at times.

dunno about that. did you every see him in the taxi in the Naked Camera DVD. even before your man started to win him up he was an arrogant and ignorant ****er IMO

he is very opininated but it is what makes it good to listen to on the drive home from work most days

He is hilariously full of shit but in an entertaining way. The RTE Sports department specialise in unearthing half-mad pundits who'll spout any old shite to drum up some controversy (see also Joe Brolly, Pat Spillane and Eamonn Dunphy). Hook's deranged ramblings are very funny to listen to - he's a national comedic treasure.

I really enjoy his radio show. Top guy.

I find it hard to listen to him when hes on tv, probably because he is commentating on something he hasnt a clue about, e.g. Ice Skating. However while commuting for a period of time last year I really liked his Newstalk show.

I can't listen to him, he slurs away like he's drunk.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭tech77

Could be a complete prick for all I know but seems like an honest, decent enough kind of guy.
    Annoying voice granted.
FFS there's a lot worse out there tbh.

Yep, even though he speaks really slowly. I can't understand why anyone would prefer him to before Matt Cooper, but I suppose there's no accounting for taste.

Possibly because Matt Cooper, although very knowledgeable about so many topics, is one of the most humorless and dry people around.

I used to dislike him. I always found him very negative and obnoxious when he was doing his rugby punditry back in the day. In recent years though I've grown to quite like him. He seems to be a bit less disturbed and more content and his commentary seems to be more measured and fair.

Just in case anyone else didn't notice this tipping point, it was as a result of his depression - where be became suicidal. He's better now though and it's reflected in his personality.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,462 ✭✭✭✭WoollyRedHat

As mentioned, bringing in George Hook to comment on the Ice skating on the late late show was pointless. Then again, the guy next to him didn't know much either, considering his preffered choice to win.

He's the only thing that makes having to put up with the unprofessional and ignorant Tom McGurk bearable. At least you get a bit of a laugh.

Cant stand him. I find him arragent an condesending. I'M also physically repulsed by him. Without trying to sound like some sort of health nazi. But he should br asahmed of himself

I really like his radio show.

Most definitely spouts opinions in rugby just for the sake of being controversial. Although I do like watching the relationship between him and Pope. The latter always trying to keep the hysteria to a minimum. However don't get me started on McGuirk, I'd like to slap that fool.

Comes accross as the sort of guy I'd like to have a beer with. Very knowedgeable in a host of subjects and one of the few Irish men who know's what LBW is.

    The man is a legend.

Have no idea who he is?

Is he rugby's answer to Dunphy or something?

I love listening to 'The Right Hook' radio show, but when he starts spouting off about how great munster rugby is from all the way up Ronan O Gara's a$$, it makes me wanna beat him to death with ROG's right leg!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

<HOOK_IMPRESSION.> aaahh, leinster, Leinster rugby is a sham right now - an absolute sham. Brian O Driscoll is a sham captain & a disgrace to Irish Rugby</HOOK_IMPRESSION>

** SHAKES THE EVER LOVING SH*T OUT OF GEORGE **

I used to be on a team coached by him, great guy. Enjoy the Right Hook, but would take his rugby punditry on RTE with a pinch of salt. However when he talks about rugby on the radio with Jim Glennon he is far less outspoken...

only because you don't understand it. Any game where you can turn up with a cool box full of beer, get pissed, fall asleep and not miss anything can't be bad can it;)

Not at all. You just sound incredibly insolent, judgmental and unfair. Not to mention the fact that you're an atrocious speller.
