This is only an opinion, but as psni has pointed out mistakes can and do happen, especialy when 2 groups such as the psni and consensia are working together on what is a large project every year. There is also the possibility that with things being a bit behind this year(according to consensia) that some people from around the top of the list from the assessments are being put through medical and vetting first to get the intake for next year started on time, as i say this is only a thought and an opinion, things may or may not be happening as they should and vetting can take a long time or as little as 2 weeks depending on the individual.
Patience all, if its for you this year it isnt going to go by you.

Oh amn Jim, we all want a celebratery drink from you lol:D

    Ethan,

Well said, we will all just have to wait and see!!

I don't think however that the timescales for receiving vetting forms/medical have anything to do with the AC placing as your position is not known until all the AC's are completed, which I think only happened last week.

AFIK you do not enter the 'merit pool' untill vetting and medical are passed..in Jim's case he went through the system early enough to have passed vetting and medical and now that the AC scores are out he must have been within the top 220+ of candidates in order to have been offered a place.

There may indeed be people who only did the AC within the last few weeks who may actually have a higher AC score, but will not even have received the vetting forms or medical date as yet, or people who have a higher AC score who have already failed vetting/medical.

I would imagine they will have the list of the top 220 and begin to offer places as each person passes medical/vetting..in addition they will also have to wait and see if all the places offered are accepted. It is reasonable to assume that some of the top 220 will not pass the medical/vetting or will not accept the offer, therfore they will look further down the merit pool.

So even if you are lower down the list there is still a good chance of getting the green light as there will be a certain level of 'wastage' within the system. Add to this the fact that double the amount of candidates are to be taken (allegedly) then it may not be too bad.

Again this is only my observation/opinion, so I may be wrong!!

Everyone just try to enjoy Xmas and don't worry too much at this stage!!

    Mickey2186. :)

    Hi Jim

Just looked threw allour recent osts and noticed that you sent of your vet forms on 19th oct. So in reality you got vetted and med and your phone call offering you a post within 6 weeks? I am just trying to get a time scale as i posted my vet forms of on about 23rd or 24th nov. So im maybe looking at getting word in mid january some time. Still have no med forms yet.

    as usual impatient lol

Good to see your still around Alan, i think we all had a wee look at Jim's posts to see about a timescale lol, mind you i think really most people will be expecting to hear about how they have done medical ways and vetting by then(january), or to know if they are in the pool.
I done my medical on the 19th of november, had to get additional info for them which i got to them a week later, vetting forms i had already posted in around first week in nov, as yet i have heard nothing, i dont know wether thats a good sign or a bad sign lol, but time will tell.

yeah still about ethan. Just cant help having a wee nosey every now and then(usually about 10times a day)lol.
Did u get ur med forms soonafter your vet forms?
Was saying to psni that i was on phone with recruitment branch and they told me i wont get med forms untill i pass vet. Although psni correctly pointed out the consens web site and even it states vet and med run along side each other. God i want a peaceful xmas. would be best pressie in world to have good news mate

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 96 ✭✭Ethan321

Yeah i think Psni is right, both vetting and medical run alongside each other, i got vetting forms out first then the medical date bout a week or so later(approx), so i cant see vetting having been done that quick.
And when you think about it, to do one after the other would only cause alot of delays.
Am not that confident of how they have looked at my medical, even tho i have only had one week off work in 9 years and run 10k runs throughout the year.
But xmas nearly upon us so will put my concentrations to that and come what may lol.:D

    PSNI
I recently heard that all the hours etc had changed. It used to be 4 days on and 4 of with 12 hour shifts. What have they changed to now?
A guy i know but have not spoke to in a while has just handed in his notice for psni and says there are alot of people doing this as they dont like the new changes. He said it was great at the startwhenhe joined a few years agobut he didnt like the changes.

    Hello Guys,

Have to say I'm checking this post far to often!

Have my medical tomorrow, little anxious about the whole thing and I'm not sure my doctor has enclosed enough information. Did anyone else need twice the space to fill in all their conditions? I ticked yes to like eight questions but I only have 3 letters from the doctor (Although he did comment on them all I just can't read it!)

    Keep the morale up!

    Martin.

    Alan

I think the shift rotation is different in every DCU although I think I read somewhere that

5 on and 2 off, followed by 6 on and 3 off is common.

I know someone myself Alan who starts at their station on soon, think its an 8 or 9 hour shift, the person im talking about was doing 12hour shifts 4 on 4 off during tutorship but has changed now to an 8 or 9 hr pattern.
Have worked 8hr shifts myself, having done it for about 10 years and then doing 12hrs shifts i notice that you have more full days off on the 12hr pattern but can be very tired on the first couple of days off you have in the block of 4. Each pattern wether 12hrs or 8 hrs has its benefits and downfalls mate.

Martin, they may ask you to post up some extra info on particular illness/condition, past or present, they give you about 4 weeks to do so.
Had to do the same myself, on one particular thing dating back to 1992 there want that much info i could dig up, though anything you do need should be in your file held at your health centre, any time you have been ill or in hospital should be documented there somehow.
If they ask you for more info you may need to make an app again with your doctor, discuss what they need and he should be able to get the secretarial staff to photocopy it for you from your file.;)

Well to give you an idea, this is what I’m looking at.

Hay fever (Childhood) – No additional info, comment from GP saying no meds ever prescribed.
Broken Nose (2004)- No additional information although a comment on my airway being clear is made on another letter.
Chipped bone in foot (15 Years ago) – No additional information, GP comment saying no problem.
Asthma (1990-1993) – No additional information, GP comment saying no meds prescribed since 1993.
Operation on nose for semi blocked nostril (2004) – Letter from consultant enclosed saying all fine etc.
Suspected IBS – (1990) – No additional info, GP note stating no problem, all clear etc.
Ruptured Ac shoulder joint (2006) – Physio’s letter enclosed stating what was done etc. GP comment saying no problem.
Stiffness in shoulders (2005) – No additional info, GP comment stating relation to above condition.
Lump that shouldn’t be there! (2007) – Consultants letter saying Neurofibromatosis, nothing to worry about etc.

That’s what I’m going in there with tomorrow. I didn’t actually get to see my GP so I couldn’t ask for any more detail. We’ll see how it goes tomorrow!

    Martin.

Good to see you back alanbelfast!

Yes the shift patterns have changed. It depends on what DCU you get allocated as Ethan321 already said. The plan is to have most DCUs on 8 hour shifts. You do 2 early shifts, followed by 2 late shifts, followed by 2 night shifts, then 2 days off. Some like it because the days are shorter so you have more time at home than the 12 hour shifts that used to be in operation. Others hate it because you have less rest days, and some are even leaving because of it. It seems like they're not a bit bothered though. There are thousands waiting to take a leaver's place!

    I have already PMed Alan.

I would stongly advise people NOT to publish any personal contact details.
Only exchange them via PM if you are satisfied your correspondent is trustworthy.

You would be surprised what can be tracked, and how quickly. ;)

As I type this thread has had 440 posts and almost 16,000 views, That's a lot of exposure. If people subscribe to a thread they get an email containing your post including any links in it. Be aware of that. Even a quick edit to an existing post has its risks.

Well I’m just back from the medical. In case it’s any use, this is how I remembered it.

    Nurse:

    Urine sample
    Eye test
    Height/Weight
    Spirometer
    Hearing test
    General questions

    Doctor:

Review of MHQ / Additional info
Mobility – Touch toes, bend this way etc
Strip to underwear – Breath sounds, BP, reflexes etc
Questionnaire – Smoke? Drink? Sports? All general stuff

That’s about it as I recall, took around an hour.

I’ve been referred to my GP for my BP. It was a little high but the Doctor mentioned that can be quite common if you’re nervous. I’ve to get my GP to check it and make comment on the outcome.

    Martin.

Have to say I found the PSNI medical a lot more dignified than the GS reserve one! No sitting around with 10 random strangers in a supplied dressing gown and paper gown for an hour whilst clutching urine sample in container...

gd morning hagar. .where has everyone gone.....is psni on the sick ?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,786 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

    Morning Alan.

I think this Forum is going to be a bit of a funny one in some ways. We are going to have posters coming and going at all sorts of odd hours depending on duty rosters. You will probably be in sync with some posters for a few days at a time and the drift out of contact as days off etc change peoples cycles.

    I'm here!

Googling ways to lower my blood pressure :o

Apparently its celery, apple cider and deep breathing for the next few days.

Well done on the eyes Alan, you’ll have the info at hand but if you pass the test they probably won’t even query it.

    Martin.

My Dad is trying meditating at the moment so he can come off his blood pressure medication! At least it makes you calmer :-)

Alan: pretty handy with the eyes - I thought I had failed mine for sure as couldn't even read all the 2nd line with my crappy right eye, but seems I must have guessed correctly as I passed it in the end.

Has anyone rung Consensia/PSNI to find out when the merit list (or whatever it's called) is being publicised to us? Jim mentioned it should be mid-Dec - anyone get theirs yet?
