In order to open a driving School you must first

    a) Have a drivers license
    b) Pass a test that shows that you have the ability to teach someone else.

Everyone takes a fixed amount of lessons (10?) before taking their test
Once you have the 10 lessons you get your test in under 2 weeks.
You can fail twice without having to re-pay for the test.

This is coming in. By Jan 2009 all driving instructors will have to be registered with the RSA and have qualified for an approved driving instructor permit.

Ah, the Middle Ages. Let's bring back the pillory for racists, and the Iron Maiden for pushers, and hanging, drawing and quartering for terrorists while we're at it.
They can't be cured can they? There's something wrong with they're brains and allowing them to breed would only put another child in danger. I think it's perfectly reasonable thing to do.

Have one giant methadone / needle exchange on bull island. We could put a huge electric razor wire fence around it with guard towers to make sure inmates don't wander out. All junkies convicted of street crime are rounded up by squads of Gardai (called facilitators), and transported there. They stay for as long as it takes them to stop being such a cancer in society.

    Giant belching chimneys are optional.

Make all civil servants/HSE/Teachers/County council officials accountable in their jobs, if you don’t perform you get fired, just like the real world.

B.I.K. tax for civil servants who park in town free of charge, just like the real world.

Revamp the drug laws. All drugs should have to pass the same set of criteria laid down by independent medical professionals, sociologists, economists etc. e.g. set relative scores for potential physical harm (e.g. overdose ratio to recommended/typical dose), addictivness, harm to society, harm to economy, have levels set at which they should be legal or not, each drug given a relative score. All currently legal drugs would be subject to the exact same testing, all supposed tradition should not come too much into it as there is already a huge bias towards currently illegal drugs which may have had centuries of traditional use which is skewed due to their relatively recent prohibition and forced underground use and hence the true tradtional/normal use is skewed due to propaganda & ignorance. e.g. if certain legal drugs were made illegal in the early 1900's people would regard users in the same way as some currently illegal drugs- as degenerate thieving addicts

One law I would like would be that if you come to our country respect our beliefs and rules as you expect us to do when we come to yours.
I was so angry about the teddy and islam incident its total double standards. If we travel to countries such as sudan/dubai etc we are expected to cover up in respect of their beliefs and can be punished if we do not. yet when they come over here they do not respect ours (e.g. the argument to wear a turban wearing gardai or a burka in work).

I also agree with the drunk driving suggestion there should be no second chances.

Oh and no access to satellite tv, internet, drugs or mobile phone in prison.its supposed to be punishment not a feckin holiday camp

    ok so thats laws...oh well

illegal possesion of a firearm, 10 years, possible parole after 7.

crime involving a firearm, 20 years, no parole.

causing injury with a firearm, 25 years, no parole.

causing death with a firearm, LIFE, no parole.

the usual considerations for accidenal injury/death and justifiable self defence would apply

A crime to dismiss or attack someones Religious views, or lack of. For example saying a Christian is stupid would in exceptional circumstances be liable for punishment, or saying an Atheist is morally corrupt.

In addition to life driving bans for drunk drivers I'd add jail time. It doesn't have to be a long time, but enough to deter people, say 2-4 weeks. They don't muck about in the States, you get done for a DUI and you have a good chance of ending up in pokey for a while. Just ask Keifer Sutherland.

    Misrepresentation of the people act.

Extra punishment for abuse of power.
Government officials and high up civil servants who are proved to be corrupt, on top of any sentence they might be getting (thought they usually get away with it), get an extra special bonus for abusing a position of power.
Expulsion from ever holding a public position/office, revocation of right to vote and time in a national arse rape facility.
The price for minor corruption needs to be so harsh that its unthinkable.
For those that think deterrance doesn't work at least they won't able to get back into power.

I'd pass a law banning loud music in pubs. Sure, have music but it shouldn't be so loud that you can't talk to someone who's standing right beside you.

I'd also get ban all boy racers who drive like idiots. Crush their cars.

Absolutely - check out the Muppet of the Year thread in the Awards forum

I don't agree with all this provisional licence crap that's going to be introduced, most drivers on any licence are perfectly safe - but I'd have a law that any inappropriate behaviour involving cars gets a 6-month or one year ban, no exceptions. By inappropriate I mean loitering, cruising, driving like a muppet and making excessive noise in public places late at night. Include a massive fine to stop re-offending or taking up the below as a passtime.

By the same token scumbags who loiter in public places like shops/shop carparks (yes I work in one, hence the anger :)) should be arrested and fined each and every time they cause ANY aggro.

That damn law where if you catch somebody breaking into your house you cant injure them or make them trip/fall etc.. on your property!! COZ THEY CAN SUE YOU!!!! That's ridiculous... We should be allowed break their necks if they're tresspassing in your home! (or at least use some kind of force to get them out) What a joke!

    I have a few....

    1) If you cannot pass your driving test after 3 attempts then you are obviously not able to drive - therefore banned for driving for life (you do get a free bus pass though :) )

    2) Once you reach the age of 60 all drivers must undergo an annual eye test & re-sit your driving test every 3 years. Old codgers are much more of a hazard on the road than the boy/girl racers everyone moans about.

    3) All home owners or occupants of a property should be allowed to hurt or kill intuders without fear of going to prison themselves.

    4) Electronic tags (that cannot be removed) for all convicted sex offenders, they can be tracked by satellite for the rest of their lives.

    5) Anyone caught stealing or damaging a persons property or possesions must repay the victim in full as well as any prison time - for example, a joyrider takes your car wrecks it but is caught by the police. The car is valued a 20k, the joyrider must pay this back in total, if they are underage then their parents/guardians must pay. Payments should be deducted directly from their wages/dole (even if it takes 10 years). If you have claimed this money from your insurance then your no claims should not be affected & said scumbag pays back the insurance company.

    6) Set up a Child Support Agency in Ireland. Single mothers must name the father of the children so he can be forced to support them (or at least contribute). If the mother refuses to name the father - tough, no child support for you. This would reduce the tax burden of unlimited welfare claims - I know of plenty of people who abuse this

    7) Long term unemployed - No job after 12 months? Then they should be taken on by local councils on a part-time basis for whatever job they are given, litter collection / graffiti removal etc in return for their dole money.

    8) Parents/guardians of underage offenders (still in full time state education) to take more responsibility for their children - not sure how to tackle this one yet, maybe heafty fines and/or prison time for parents??

    Think that's all for now....

Oh, and all sexy wimmins must be topless in the summer :D

    legalise it

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,900 ✭✭✭Quality

I would definetly like to see the jail sentences changed for murder etc A life should mean life.

I think Serious sex offenders should be named and shamed and put on a list.

Prisons should be more harsh, Prisoners should be made do heavy labour. Work the arses of the feckers. Let them work off there stay instead of the tax payer having to foot the bill.

    I like this idea.

I like this but instead of part-time I'd be more on for full time.
Obviously excluding those who are unemployed due to disability.

Or something like multiply the minimum wage x a full working year (40 hours per week) and make it illegal to earn less than this per year unless you're in full time education, or are in part-time education and are working part-time on top of it.

Or possibly a mixture of the two.

If something like this was introduced a few years ago, the M50 would have been done a long time ago.

I'd agree with this one too. If you're child is misbehaving/causing trouble, it's the parents job to sort it out. If they fail to do so then they should be disciplined themselves be it with prison time or fines.

I'd make a law that says you need a licence to have a child and that you cannot aquire said licence until you reach 21 years of age. To be granted the licence you need have a history check done and you need to prove that you can support your child with with little to no help from the state. So for instance, sex offenders, murderers etc could not get a licence just like they couldn't get a visa. You must be earning a minimum income that shows you can support your child. If you are not in a relationship and would prefer to be a single parent then you need to already have a father chosen and this father would also have to apply for a licence with you as a designated mother.

If for any reason you cannot attain a licence and you fall pregnant by ''accident'', then your child will be taken from you and given to a loving couple who have applied for a licence via means of adoption. The biological mother and father of the child would be charged with ''having children without a licence'' and punished accordingly.

    I'm completely serious. ;)

Personally, i would like th Right to Silence removed. Or if it cannot be removed, it should be changed that invoking the right to silence indicates participance in the offence. In all fairness, why should people ahve the right to silence? The only ones that use it are the ones who have something to hide...

Ah yes, my 5th Amendment Rights. Not sure what its called here actually.. No, I'm hanging onto that, thanks. I shouldn't even need to get into how ridiculous it would be to remove this.

Im thinking a law to restrict the sale of alcohol for 5 years - we'll see how the country gets on :D
