Big Brother at Tesco's?..

    A little worrying this one, if its true.

    A friend was telling me today how he gets vouchers from Tesco's for various food stuffs. But a few weeks ago he rescued a kitty and held onto it for a few days. He bought some cat food, plus a tray and kitty litter.

    Then the other day a voucher arrives for cat products!.

    Is Tesco's keeping tabs on our purchases?.

    In a word, yes. Its the main reason they have loyalty cards, so as to log your purchases and target certain products at you. You leave an electronic footprint everywhere you go- using an ATM, clubcards, logging into boards from a particular location, even carrying your phone around.

    In this country coupons are usually to flog some crap product nobody wants to buy. My mate was demanding one night I ring in a Godfathers pizza as he had a buy one get one free offer (he had never eaten them before. I had. Twice. Awful pizza). He went ahead and got his pizza. Said it was muck (dunno if all Godfathers are like this, but my local is pretty poor)

    i used to use a dunnes clubcard and every few months they would send me out vouchers for stuff i never bought. my thinking was that they checked what i was buying and sent the vouchers out to try and make me buy stuff that i wouldnt normally buy to eventually increase the amounts i bought. never use one anymore although im just back from tesco after spending 250 on food and drink that could work out grand on vouchers

    Every week I try to use my clubcard for a hooker outside tesco,

    yeah, its all targeted advertising these days. all the big companies are investing in this more and more. Google are probably the global leaders in it. basically iGoogle was developed primarily with this in mind - contextual advertising and collaborative filtering can only do so much. the more they know about you personally the better they can effectively target ads at you (and also get paid more to do so). get used to it, you probably wont be able to escape this kind of thing in the future.

    Grow some balls people. use your card if you want but when you get vouchers for something you don't want,do as I do ,use them to line the cat's litter tray or clean your hole with them.Since when do you have to buy anything you don't want.:rolleyes:

    I am actually surprised you didnt know this, basically it helps them collect consumer information and predict shopping trends. According to some trains of thought the value of the informaion they gather is more valuable that the vouchers/cash back you get.

    You do also realaise that all the chains (from spar to tesco) have a category management team who lay out the stores (based on trends and information collected from schemes like the value club one) so as to get you (the consumer) to part with as much cash as possible??

    I don't really see the problem with all this, so what if their tracking what you buy, as long as their not passing on your specific details to other marketing companies, then let them. Although they might be benefiting more from the marketing information gathered, than the value of the coupons, at least we get something out of it.

    When you think about it, Tesco's can learn an awful lot about you for marketing purposes...

    Bought some car polish eh? So how about some Tesco car insurance?
