Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. Ultraportable tablet macbook with multitouch screen. Please.
Now THAT would be nice :D Of course a full iTunes store (TV, video) in Ireland and an announcement that Apple will forevermore observe currency trends when setting their prices in different countries would also be nice ;)

Hopefully iTunes will take a leaf from the new Amazon music store and lower their song prices. Wishful thinking eh?

Excuse the doublepost but Link. I was kinda hoping for a 10" or so screen:(

13.3" is small enough imo. We need something to take the place of the 12" Powerbook. But knowing Apple they'll find some way to cripple it. Everytime I got to buy a new laptop they do something to put me off.

I was under the impression Steve was always the main man in the mac world when a keynote was delivered. ( i am only a year using mac)

I am waiting to see what apple are going to do with apple tv. If i like what i see i will buy it. If i see no new ideas or something that does not appeal to me i will not buy apple tv. This mac world is all about apple tv to me. Although one never knows what is going to happen........

Also rumors of 10.5.2 being released at MacWorld, of a sub-notebook minus any optical drive, and of an iTablet for 2008.

Nice rumours... 3G iPhone rumoured to be released before June at the latest as well.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭BanzaiBk

So I was listening to the year end MacBreak Weekly and Andy Ihnatko mentioned the idea of a "big iPhone". A tablet like device that would be bigger than an iphone but smaller than a laptop, that would hit a 799$ pricepoint. The more the group discussed it (the wantability factor plus the delay of the iPhone SDK) it began to make a lot of sense to me.

It's highly plausible that Apple were so reluctant to even announce the existence of an iPhone SDK nevermind a release date because the SDK was capable of writing programmes not just for the iPhone but for unreleased computers and devices.

If anything though, I for one would be disappointed if Apple released a touchscreen ultraportable (another rumour) and would not even consider purchasing it. Similarly, a tablet/PDA device with no phone capabilities wouldn't even bleep on my radar.

Any chance of improvements/price reductions on the 15.4" Macbook Pros? Am thinking of picking one up in March/April.

Hoping for a ultra portable MBP as stated, my GF is heading to NYC in Feb and I'd like them to be shipping by then :)

i plan on introducing myself to the world of mac this year, so really anything new would be good for me. i'm keeping a keen eye on any MBP announcements, but normal macbook improvements might be up my alley too

Read a good one yesterday ( google news, it's my main page when i open up safari) -- it went something like this --- ' This years mac world blah blah blah ( my words) will be opened up by Steve Jobs, more blah blah blah . Steve Jobs often opens mac world ... blah blah blah and he uses this as a BULLY PULPIT.

Steve does make you want to buy stuff, he does it so well, sorry i have said this before and i am about to repeat myself, again, I really hope something special is done with apple tv. This product should be good, it probably is, but it lacks an ____ ( can't find the word) with me.

Do you think apple will crack the tablet market that the other companies have failed to do.????

Anyway, one advice, after watching Steve on the bully pulpit give yourself a week before you decide to buy. You may not need the new stuff.

I also reckon that 2008 will be the year millions and millions of people will see the light and move to mac. That is my prediction of 2008. I reckon this mac world will be awesome. I can't wait for it.

What terrible timing, I'm flying into San Francisco on the 13th and flying to Vegas on the 14th so I'll miss the whole Macworld (I'm flying back to SFO on the 17th).

I was in SF the year that they released the iPod Shuffle and every lamppost in the city was covered in posters for it, they really love the Mac in SF

Hopefully whatever they release will be in the Apple store in Union Square when I get back

Obviously, but with the reports of low stock levels of the mini (and blackbook) could there be a replacement? Seems like a fairly moot point anyway.

Don't think anyone has posted about the supposed iTunes rentals, both appleinsider and macrumors seem to think that this will be a major announcement. Macworld is traditionally where consumer products are unveiled right?

you've obviously seen the gearlive video too

Fact: firmware update is rumour until announced by Apple, leaked firmware video or not.

Fact: notions of sub-notebook minus internal optical drive are rumour until announced by Apple, analyst guesses or not.

Conclusion: Everything is rumour until announced!

Yes seen the gearlive vid and photos which I didn't believe. Normally you have to take every thing Apple rumor related with a grain of salt, but after a number of days it has been confirmed as being in the hands of the dev team. The source that this information has come from is reportedly accurate, time will tell.

Fact remains that 10.5.2 has been seed to developers and is almost good to go for Macworld
itunes rental (probably states only) is long anticipated - and a number of studios personal are heading to San Fran specifically for 15th (Steves Keynote).
Notebook is pure speculation at the moment and only rumor. Might come to pass.
Iphone update appears to be very convincing and as it has been confirmed by the dev team almost certainly more than rumor. I guess we will know for certain on Tuesday the 15th after steve finishes.

I vaguely remember reading on Gizmodo or similar about a month ago, where someone from Asus (they make the apple laptops) said that they were making a tablet laptop for Apple.

    //Edit : Linkage.

So, not FACT or confirmed as real at all then...

    10.5.2 is fact

1.1.3 - rumor with extremely high probability

Ultra portable - Rumor very consistent with apple patents

    3G iphone - Rumor

Having attend a number of Macworld events through the last few years, one thing that is always true - OS gets updated.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 1,250 ✭✭✭babypink

ah yeah.....the OS isn't a biggie for me at all.........OS updates come periodically! I tend to follow the dev build progress and its gonna happen pretty soon.

    The rest of it.....we'll see!

I dunno about being excited about this sub-notebook. I mean a smaller MacBook would be nice, although I think the screen size is good as it is. But I can't imagine using a notebook with no optical drive. The amount of software that comes on CDs/DVDs, not to mention ripping music etc. I use my optical drive a LOT. Maybe I'm missing the point though

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,985 ✭✭✭big_moe

i can defo see the point of the sub notebook, DJing anyway for a start...

photographers, video people.... and body that doesnt have a power supply near and needs a VERY small powerful notebook

but for me i would use it a bit to DJ with, but i'd still buy one with an optical drive. im hoping to upgrade my macbook to a 15" macbook pro so hopefully something will be done to them!!

does anybody know why apple dont have the magnetic clasp on the MBP?? the "normal" clasps take away from the looks of it i think...

    adam

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 11,987 ✭✭✭✭zAbbo

you can get the optical drive add-on if you want.

Personally I want a smaller than 15" MBP, any extras (NAND/50% lighter etc.) are welcome.

Most/All software I use come in download/disk image format anyway, I've never once loaded software from a CD/DVD on my Macbook.

Those have been there months - I really don't know why PC World bother. Anyone goes looking at a Mac they steer them to PCs anyway, then they have to clear out old Macs at a loss. When they DO eventually, though no fault of theirs, actually sell a Mac, they sell them the 3 or 5 year warranty for software and H/W even though they have no idea how they cover it (S/W not at all, hard fight to find out who repairs the HW for them) The amount of fights we had with people when I was in Tech Support, with PC World telling them any old crap and shunting them back to Apple.

An apparent leak from MacWorld 2008: link. Quoted to save y'all clicking.
As everybody’s favorite keynote of the year approaches, more and more rumors about the great iProducts to come begin floating around the great rumor mill. Our friends over at MacRumors have supposedly obtained a draft version of the keynote transcripts for the upcoming MacWorld 2008. I have no idea if it is real or not, but I wouldn’t doubt it. Here’s a summary of the speculated things to come. Here’s a compiled list of what MacRumor’s two transcripts consist of. Wow! An awful lot of predictions for one show there, I wonder which ones will come to pass...
    Mac Nano
    • Redesigned Mac–Mini
    • Half the height as its predecessor
    • Now has an anodized aluminum shell.
    • 2.2GHz and 2.4GHz Santa Rosa chips
    • 32GB flash solid state drive (64GB build-to-order option, also option for 160GB conventional HDD)
    • On sale at MacWorld, ships February

Yuck, I hate my Mac Mini, don't see how decreasing the already-crappy storage capacity is going to improve these
    MacBook Pro
    • Mobile Penryn Chipset
    • 2.4GHz and 2.6GHz Speeds
    • 17” gets LED backlighting

    • Black anodized aluminum option similar to the iPod classic

Looks interesting, I might pick one of these up in March if I can scrape the pennies together.
    MacBook Nano
    • Ultraportable Mac

I can see the appeal of having no optical drive. Only 32GB storage for the basic model though?? I have large storage requirements myself, appreciate that other might require yet but surely this is a huge crippling feature. The prospect of a machine with no moving parts (optical drive or HDD) is kind of cool though. Also a 13" screen seems a bit big for an ultraportable machine.
    Front Row 3.0
    • All Leopard compatible Macs will be able to use it
    • Support for the iTunes Store
    • eBook Reader
    • SDK for 3rd Parties to make plugins
    • Can be controlled via Apple Remote, iPhone, or iPod Touch
    • iCal, Mail, and Safari integration

Excellent news, I think a few basic changes like the SDK will make this appeal hugely to users.
    MacTouch
    • New product not in the MacBook family
    • Two 9" multitouch-sensitve widescreens, both at 1280 x 854
    • Innovative, minimalist, two-way folding/sliding, dual-screen, multi-position design with magnetic clasps. Inspired by the paperback book, but thinner, more flexible and surprisingly tough.

    • Multitouch sensitive version of iPhoto
    • Bluetooth, 802.11b/g, USB2.0, optical/analogue audio in/out, built in speakers & microphone.

    Now that sounds cool...

lol. That list is crazy. It's from page 2 of macrumors anyway, which is where all the fanboy-wishlist/fake-for-laughs stuff goes. I think everyone is setting themselves up for disappointment as usual. Jobs will probably just yack about the iphone and it's new firmware for an hour and introduce a new crippled macbook. That's all I'm expecting tbh.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 2,285 ✭✭✭BanzaiBk

I think people are missing the point of a flash based laptop. It's not meant to be a main machine, but a supporting travel computer/on the job computer. The "original" MBP is for people who want to use it as a main machine.

MacTouch sounds similar to what Andy Ihnatko was talking about.
