Mary Harney - has her time come ?

It's really amazing that so few people can see that this is the real problem - not Mary Harney. The health service is far from being underfunded - the staff just won't countenance even the most minor of changes! She'll never get anywhere as long as Bertie continues to kiss the unions' collective holes rather than force them to enter the 21st century.

To all those calling for her head: remember that she fought to get this job - possibly the first TD in a generation to actually *want* the "poisoned chalice". If she goes, the only TDs that will take the job for the next decade at least will just keep their head down and keep the status quo going. MH is effectively the last chance we'll have for many years to sort out the health service.

P.S. Am I the only one that thinks that all these 'exposes' are VERY convenient to our overpaid hospital consultants in their battle with MH?

I think u have a point but she just doesn't seem to have the ability to force change.

I think Michael O Leary could be the man for the job, he recently stated he'd love to tackle the job if it didnt have all the political BS. I'm begining to think maybe we should give him a shot...

(waits to be laughed at and shot down...)

Fact: FF and the PD's have been in power for 10 years. Regardless of the problems the Government face in taking on the unions and various healt care workers they have had 10 years to make a difference. They have been promising and lying and dodging the issue for ten years. Enough is enough. Time for heads to roll. Lets start witht the repugnant head of Harney and then move on to Bertie et al.

Which if I'm not mistaken is about the longest anyone within the 10 years has stayed in the job. She has tried and I commend her on that but it's not really working.

If I was Minister for Health the first thing I'd do is get everyone in the health service to tell me what they are supposed to be doing. And I would want that within 100 days. Then offer voluntary redundancies.

Alongside this I would headhunt the best guys from the best health services in the world and offer them some of the loads of cash I'd save from cutting back on administrative staff (in fairness this is apparently what they have done with the new Cancer Chief)

Then I would get an agreement on principle from the nurses and the doctors about wanting to move forward and be flexible.

Once everyone is pulling in the same direction it would be a lot easier to implement change.

Except of course that the consultants and unions have no interest in reform. MH is facing an uphill struggle against vested interests, yet there have been measurable improvements in the health service in spite of this.

As someone who generally doesn't like the PD's or FF, I agree that Mary Harney is actually trying her best to improve the health service and probably doing a better job than anyone else in government would of trying to fix the problems.

The HSE is a joke though and so are the consultants. My only real concern is that she may have lost motivation to reform the service from all the blockades over the years. I know I would have found it hard to keep motivated to fix the problems in the health service.

The person or more likely committee that caused this problem should be sacked, not the minister. I think a huge problem in the health service is the 10 person committee to make decisions when one person could have made the call to protect themselves in case it all goes arse ways. That way nobody gets fired. There is too much protection going on in the health service and mistakes are inevitable as long as people don't have to do their jobs to keep their jobs.

She's the best bet to sort out the mess that is our health service. Who would be up to replacing her ? She is not the problem , the problem is with the HSE.

Am I missing something here but I thought Harney was responsible for the health system which would I think encompass the HSE?

I don't want to be around when she goes off.

In my view she's a f*cking useless plank.

    FF/ Greens / PDs = shower of ****.

True, but then again its less of a clusterf**k than the clusterf**ked health boards system that went before it.

but seriously, will anyone ever be held accountable for their actions, ever? (and this does not only affect the Health Service...)

I mean, ultimately, Mary is the chief Indian of the whole thing - she should, no, she must, demand full accountability from everyone reporting to her, and so on, all the way down the chain to the cleaners and caterers. And make processes/responsibilities transparent, so it's clear who f*cked up when and why. This is people's lives, and OUR health these people are playing with...

And if someone can't or won't accept responsibilities for their actions, out they go.

This whole backscratching protection bullsh*t has to stop...
