Whatever about it being offensive or if he's crossed a line, bla bla, etc - It is causing controversy (which he probably intended doing) and publicity (just turned on the radio tonight and there was a discussion about him on fm104) then I log on here and people are talking about him. The old saying goes "There is no such thing as bad publicity" and it very much applies here. The man is a genius, and by discussing him and his jokes here you are doing exactly what he wants you to. Well done.

    agree with you 100%

I was at his gig on saturday night. Found it all hilarious.

If your going to get offended at a comedy gig, then please stay at home.

Funny how nobody is going on about his chinaman expressions or wheelchair jokes or knacker jokes. Oh no, thats all hilarious and in good taste, but when he starts making jokes about kids with Downs Syndrome (With whom he works with) everyone goes ballistic. Nonsense.

Its like Chef on South Park. Make jokes about everyone elses religion, but make jokes about my (Isaac Hayes) religion, then its not funny, its offensive. Again, pure nonsense.

Yes PeakOutput i believe you are right. How is it ever to evolve if the piss isnt taken. Some crap is funny and some isn't. We laugh at something or someone and move on, the next comedic fad if you will.

I really dont give a crap if someones jiving about paddys and spuds, as long as its in the context of good presentation and delivery.

I'm not sure it's much of a defence that he does charity work with Downs syndrome kids. Doesn't that just make it worse somehow? "solid gold comedy material here".

Wow, he's making noises. How funny.

How is that man popular. HOW????

I saw him on tv and thought he was hilarious. Then I went to see him in Vicar Street (about two years ago) and it was just not funny. The person I was with and I just kept looking at each other puzzled while everyone around us fell around the place laughing. It's the only comedy gig I've been to where I didn't laugh once.

    + 1

I also saw him about 2 years ago in the Marquee in Cork! Before that I loved him but for some reason I just didn't find him that funny that night!! They must fill the place with laughing gas or something when he's doing a show!!!
I was a bit shocked at some of the things he joked about but saying that I wasn't offended...

I would love to see a transcript of what was actually said. Does any know, could they paraphrase?

Seems like no-one can see past the subject to the actual content. Lots of people making judgement calls based on emotion rather than fact here by the sounds of things

I agree with you, but the only thing I find with Tommy Tiernan is that he can be very hit and miss. I've seen him live about 3-4 times, sometimes it was very funny, other times i barely laughed.

I think he does the whole "if I shout it will make it funnier" trick far too often. Some of his material is good, funny observations about our society. But some of it is poor, coming out with something outrageous just to get a reaction. But it's comedy, so people should expect something offensive. Whether they find it funny is a different matter. And if people didn't pay any attention to what offends them it would be a nothing story, with zero publicity, and then it might force comedians to come up with good material.

well even if its distasteful its all a publicity stunt at the end of the day. Tommorrow it will be something else, bigger and pushing the limits more...amputee orphans in Africa or whatever:rolleyes:

Anyone who goes to a Tommy Tiernan gig deserves to be insulted.

Tommy Tiernan is a fuppen' legend! He's one of the top comics in the world and without a doubt the best Irish comic ever. Let the man say what he wants if you no likey no listen. Everyone here is always complaining about the pc brigade and when Tommy (the legend) Tiernan attacks them the first thing ye all do is run to the moral high ground and join them in they're fight.

Tommy is funny, but this is a little distasteful. I've no problem in making fun of things people can change - like alcoholics or whatever, but after seeing my father working as a care-worker for down-syndrome children.. I can safely say, down-syndrome children could bring a tear to the hardiest of men. He should have a lil more class

I think he put it best himself; if you don't want some bit of controversy, go see Dara.

Has he a nice oneliner for where one should go if one wants comedy?

    ;)

Seen the show last Thursday with some friends, one of which has a two year DS child, another works with them.

They both really enjoyed the show (we had several scoops in us) - as TT said on stage "this is not real life its the comedy bus an i need you lot to come on board. The warmup act was very funny aswell - Emer Tiernan.

Personally I found his "I now have to rape you comment" to a girl he caught filming him more offensive (and very funny)......

Either everything is fair game or nothing is.

    The South Park way...

    i absolutely love the man

he clearly says at the start of gigs that these are "JUST JOKES" and that ppl should not take offense at them no matter what. at least he has the balls to push the boundaries of PC acceptability.hes one of the only comedians who does so.

i cant wait to go see his new show in january.

He's a coward and a tool. He only slags off people who aren't going to make any real fuss, except to generate publicity for him.

South Park (excepting Isaac Hayes) makes fun of absolutely everything. It has no fear.
