    Was surprised that this wasn't posted earlier. Saw it in today's Sun iirc.

    Apparently in his live show in Vicars Street he is doing a gag about kids with Downs Syndrome, which probably includes impressions.

    I can't find a linkeh at the moment.

    Regardless, I've seen my fair share of comedians and I would find it hard to take offense to jokes. Now I personally don't have Downs Syndrome, nor do I have anyone close to me who is affected. My opinion might change if my circumstances were different, but I'd like to think they wouldn't. Being laid back with an open mind is something I'm renound for.

    I remember being at a Des Bishop gig where he was cracking jokes about Ballymun as he'd just finished his TV program in which he'd lived in Ballymun for a while. One punter took offense to his jokes, stood up and told Bishop to fook off and then walked out. I think thats being a bit sensative, but then thats me.

    Thoughts?

    He did that gag at the Elec Picnic too. He was very offensive to all kinds. But it wnet down ok, apart from a few that walked out. There was some groaning and bad reactions, but mostly laughter

    Ah don't say that about Tommie, he's a comedy genius and very cute.
    I can't help laughing at every joke he tells.
    Some people are a bit over sensitive i think.
    After all its only a joke.

    I wasn't at the gig. But from the descriptions it sounds to me like he was making fun of the way people treat people with downs syndrome, as opposed to the suffers themselves.
    I have a friend with a speech impediment, and well meaning people can be so incredibly conscending. Assuming that he is mentally slow and treating him like a three year old.
    Often I have seen him take advantage of these saps to get away with murder or make fools of them, and I think that is the angle Tommy was coming from.

    I've seen the gag. He does go a bit far but it's really just a lash out at the PC brigade. I mean, Tommy does alot of work with Down Syndrome charities, he's hardly taking a pop at them. By the way we do have a Stand-Up Comedy forum... click my sig

    Defenseless? I'm sure there are many people with Down's Syndrome who cannot defend themselves, but there are many who can.There are also many people without Down's Syndrome who can't defend themselves, and many who can.

    I don't know what Tommy said, so I can't say whether I think it was wrong or not, but to say that people with Down's Syndrome cannot defend themselves is a bit much.

    I know a few people with Down's Syndrome, and they'd all be quick to defend themselves if they felt hard done by, and they would do so articulately and with intelligence.

    Of course, I'm not saying that all people with Down's Syndrome can defend themselves, and I'm not saying that what Tommy said was right or wrong, but you can't just generalise like that.

    I visit a care home with people with down syndrome every week.Despite varying degrees of disability they certainly wouldn't articulate sharp witty responses were I to start slagging them off. Can young infants with down syndrome defend themselves adequately against someone far more street wise? Certainly not. Its morally insensitive to all of them and their families even if some can defend themselves.

    No I havn't seen the gig but read news reports and heard the Joe Duffy show a few days ago.

    I am sure you are right when you say the people you meet cannot defend themselves, but you are talking about one care home vs the rest of the world.
    Also, I doubt it is just infants with down syndrome who cannot defend themselves. I doubt any infant could! :p

    Well actually I can generalise beyond one care home as I'm doing first class honours in psychology and have knowledge of it in connection with applied behavioural analysis. Sarcastically refering to all children as equally defenseless is hardly very productive:p

    I have nothing against Tommy Tiernan. I actually thinks he's a good comedian but he got it wrong this time.

    Whatever about it being offensive or if he's crossed a line, bla bla, etc - It is causing controversy (which he probably intended doing) and publicity (just turned on the radio tonight and there was a discussion about him on fm104) then I log on here and people are talking about him. The old saying goes "There is no such thing as bad publicity" and it very much applies here. The man is a genius, and by discussing him and his jokes here you are doing exactly what he wants you to. Well done.
