I flew two weeks ago to Newark from Dublin with Continental and it was done in NEWARK and the queues were mental....

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,889 ✭✭✭Third_Echelon

Yeah it depends on what airline you fly with. Generally it is done in Dublin for Aer Lingus, American Airlines and Delta.

US Airways and Continental usually go from Pier C, which doesn't have the immigration facilities on the Dublin side...

Excellent work people. I checked on the aer lingus website and found a bit of info on it. Says that flights out before 4pm have immigration done in Dublin. So thats grand

Ok, getting worried about the immigration issue now! How do people recommend getting from Newark to Manhatten??

How do people recommend getting from Newark to Manhatten??

    There are 3 ways really.

Cab - Very expensive if you can get one to go there. Not recommended.

Bus - Shuttle bus will make two stops, the NY port authority or 41st between park and lexington avenue.

Train - Drops you in Penn Station, right beside Madison Sq Garden.

Its obviously either train or bus but what you may want to consider is the time you arrive. If your arriving lets say at 4 or 5 pm then the best option is the train as your hitting the rush hour traffic and its a nightmare getting into and through the lincoln tunnel so could take you about 2 hours. Any other time of day it taks just under 1 hour, is only $13 and will pick you up right outside the terminal. Just look for the Newark Shuttle service. Has it written all over it can't miss it and it leaves every 15mins.

The other option is the train. If your flying to Newark you going to terminal c, take the airport mono to the main terminal (2nd stop), turn right and get the train $30 direct to penn station. All this takes roughly just under 1 hour depending on how long your waiting. It leaves every half hour on the quarter so if you get your baggage and its 10 to the hour you've just missed it so get the bus!

Either way its very simple. If you need any help with directions from either 41st, teh port authority or penn station to your place of stay let me know.

Just to add, if you get the Amtrak service from Newark Airport to Penn, it costs $30 one-way but if you get the NJ Transit it's only $15. Takes the same length of time, but half the price.

There are automatic ticket machines in the Airport building before you head up the escaltors to the monorail/Airtrain station at Terminal C.

I'm just back from NY, I didn't have to do immigration at all in Dublin airport, and nothing much in JFK..just walked up the counter with my passport and they photographed and fingerprinted me and that was that! I did fill in the
'advanced information' on the AerLingus website before I went so maybe that helped I don't know.

Any sign of customs when you came back in? Stop many people?

Everyone was nervous getting off the plane with their 20+ bags, <snip></snip>

The first couple of days it was clear and cold but then it got much warmer, I wouldn't bring too heavy a jacket as its very warm in all the shops, just bring a hat and scarf that you can take off when you need.

Got in yesterday afternoon. Customs were crazy, lots of staff and lots of areas to the side of customs where customers bags were getting searched. Myself and the GF practically ran through customs and got away with it which is great since my card was worn down to nothing in tiffany.

Weather is not too bad there. Bit rainy over the past tow days i was there but not too cold. The second day I was there I went to an NFL game and got sunburned!

I am going to a wedding at the end of Dec, but will be in New York at the beginning of the month to shop, so am wondering if anyone can recommend anywhere that would sell dresses... or know of any of the outlet stores that do dressy stuff. I was there last year and found it very difficult to find dressy outfits.. Seemed to be mostly casual stuff around...

Would love to find this out also :D

Can anyone recommend any good restaurants in New York?

Would prefer to eat away from the tourist attractions for a night or two!

There's a place to eat at the old port. It's a little shopping centre with a food court full of random kinds of food. No resturants but you can eat overlooking (or underlooking in this case) the brooklyn bridge, it's quite a site. Get the Subway to Wall Street and you can walk from there. I don't think it's a touristy place because it was empty when i was there.

    That's gas!

We arrived in on Saturday morning into Shannon and there wasn't a customs official to be seen. Even in the red channel. There were plenty of people there with 4 & 5 bags each. I wish I got a few ipods over there now.

We flew with Delta, they were fine, all drinks were free including alcohol and the food was OK. Films were terrible but that's another story.

The best tip I got from this thread before going was to rent an apartment for the week instead of a hotel. We stayed in a really really plush studio apartment on Battery Park for $1200 for 7 nights for the both of us.

Another tip we got was to buy the Zagat New York Restaurant guide. We ate like kings on it, the one night we left it behind we ate muck.

The big department stores have lovely dressy clothes. Macy's and Bloomingdales in particular. If you think the price tickets look dear, convert to Euro in your head and you'll be whipping out the credit card very quickly.

Just wondering where you came across this option? How did it work? Where did you collect the keys to the apartment etc?

    Just on apartments...

A couple of years ago we booked one through a website and it was advertised to sleep 3. when we got there it slept 2, and the owners were still living in it (one was actually not home from work yet). We waited for an hour before he came home and told us he couldn't rent the place as it only slept two. He hadn't even bother to clean up and the fridge stank. We had to traipse around Manhatten looking for a room in december, and I wouldn't wish that on anybody.

I'm not saying they're all bad, just to be careful. We got a full refund from the letting agency and they were quick enough to do it too.

I suppose it's down to luck. We used www.nyhabitat.com and have spoken to two others who've used them successfully, there was also a feature on it in one of the Sunday newspapers a while back.

You pay the agent something like 10% of the total then you pay the rest to the owner who's details you're given when you pay the 10%. You basically have to set up with them when you're going to meet them. We met ours at the apartment. She also accepted a Euro Cheque as security deposit which saved us a bundle in exchange rates.

I used NYhabitat too. As I've said they were OK to deal with in terns of refunds. The guy just advertised his apartment wrong

The one we got was in Tribeca Battery Park and there's a red sofa in it's picture. I can definitely vouch for that one. :D

The 2008 prices are slightly higher though.

4TH Floor of Macys. Some lovely dresses in there.

Also, just came back yesterday. Was freezing! Snowing on Sunday. No problems with customs on way back. Walked straight past them (thank god, as i did some heavy shopping!)

Judging by what the customs official on Matt Cooper said they're really targeting people who have exceeded their baggage limit (ie more than 2 big bags) and there were plenty of those around the day I came home! Still I saw no one being stopped (or anyone to stop them for that matter).
