    Hi,
Going to NYC in may next year. I was wondering what sporting events might be on during that time? Id like to get my boyfriend tickets for something (football/hockey/baseball/basketball etc), but have no idea what the seasons are in the USA.
    Any help? Tips? Advice? Thanks

Ticketmaster.com is a real great way to know what sport events are upcoming for the months ahead, just select new york and the date range of when you are visiting there. Or check out the ny websites www.nycvisit.com www.newyork.com - hope thsi helps.

Looking to book accommodation in New York and had a look at the Mayfair New York hotel. Reviews on tripadvisor are fairly mixed and i was wondering if anyone here had stayed there.

That is a very nice hotel! It's a 5 star.
The westin beds are known as heavenly beds and they are!
Your room will be bigger by New York standards.
You'll also have two rain forest shower heads and 24hr room service.

Have a look at trip advisor,it's rare that you get a hotel on there with so many good reviews-Enjoy!

Ok so, anyone recently back from the states and had hassle with customs at Dublin airport?

Been hearing a few "friend of a friend" had "all his stuff taken off him customs" horror stories...but want to hear first hand if anyone has actually been stopped?

I'm flying out Monday morning for the week and plan on doing a bit of damage to the visa card.

    Nice one!

I ended up booking a club room for extra comfort...it's hardly worth it for all the time I'll spend in the hotel but sure feck it!!

20 slices of the Big Apple-Excellent link! Im particularly interested in the part where you can pay 75 dollars to have somebody take you to secret locations for off street stores and low prices kind of thing. Anybody have experience or thoughts on this?

As per the charter, you shouldn't expect other people to do your legwork :)

alright lads, all i'm hearing on the radio lately is about the damn clamp down on customs for people coming in from new york...now i'm not going to have like 5 suitcases, i was going to take over one big one and come back with the big one plus a medium size one..

Now, i'm not going buying any electronic goods, just some clothes and some small pressies..a friend has me buying her a juicy coyure bag and i'd say that will prob be the most expensive thing i will be bringing back.I had heard to take all tags off all items, but i just heard on ray darcy that you could end up paying more in customs then, cos they will evaluate the prices of items by irish prices...so you should keep the tags on them , or at least keep all the reciepts..

Anyone here been stopped by customs? they said the busiest times will be the next 2 weeks, hopefully they will cam down a bit then, cos i am going in over 2 weeks.

They'd a guy from customs on the matt cooper show last night... Since October they've stopped 3000 people. 46 had to pay, think the average was €400...

I think the best bet is to leave tags on some clothes etc and take some off, try not to have them look like they where just bought. He was saying that its impossible to stop everyone. They mainly go for people with too many bags, people that are obvious(ie. Carrying 3 Ps3's etc)... He was saying it was common to see people with 6/7suitcases...

As he said, you have €170+ to spend without getting charged vat... You can get a hell of alot in the outlets for that so it's quite easy to fill one or two cases and not be charged vat....

What is the problem with asking for advice on hotels in New York?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

Because it's been asked many times before, and you'll find lots of information in the big megathread designed to stop the forum from being cluttered with nothing New York thread.

Search now works on boards so between the big thread for New York questions and answers, the multitude of other threads about it in the past it should be covered.

I'm splitting this off from the megathread. If you've got any more questions, send me a PM
    :)

    Hey everyone. :D

I am going too New York for 2 weeks next March over Paddys weekend and Easter break. I was just wondering does anyone know what the weather is like during the middle of March. What should a bring with me? Jeans and t- shirts? [The normal] Or will it be too hot for that.

    Thanks. :D

It might be very cold actually.
Check out www.weatherunderground.com 1 day before you go and you will get a fair picture of the weather 4 days ahead.
Just type in New york new york into the location bar (yeah New york twice) and press return.

Queue is about 5 mins at most as far as I could see. We arrived at around 6pm on a Saturday and there were only a few people waiting and taxis as far back as I could see so there shouldn't be any problems. Make sure to get the official yellow taxis though. We were offered lifts into the city by "unofficial" taxis. We were warned against this by loads of people saying they'll try to rip you off?

This probably won't help but the first time we went we were waiting about 30 minutes. The second time it was less than 10.

Has anyone flown Continental to Newark recently?

Does anyone know if we will do immigration in Dublin to Newark?

Yup just flew back in yesterday morning, shattered!

The immigration is now in Dublin airport. Through gate B something or other you will present your passport and boarding card and then go down stairs. This is where your real q begins! So don't leave it like all other flights where you wait for the q to die down before getting up, get up and as when you get downstairs to border control you'll be here for a while!

Essentially your going to q, they take your passport and immigration card from you, tear off your return part and staple it to the passport. Take your photo and finger prints and off you go. Note that if you want to get a sandwich or drink etc... before going down there its advised as there is one meesley shop down there with bugger all and if you had the mis fortune of being me last week you had a 5 hour delay down there!

In Newark simple get off the plane and get your bags...

That depends on where you came from. I've gone to NY through shannon before and it was all done in Shannon so no waiting in JFK. I've also gone to london then to JFK and had to q for an age as Gatwick didn't do the immigration part. That took about 2 hours to get through as they are doing loads of other flights as well, not just yours! Dublin to Newark now is great as its all done here!
