Better than crunchy nut cornflakes, better than coco pops, better than rice crispies, not as good as regular oats.

Seriously guys, Weetabix have a great website that gives full details of all their products including nutritional value listings and ingredients of all products: http://www.weetabix.co.uk

Look for wholegrain/ wholefood ingredients, low saturated fat, a decent amount of protein and very few sugars.

actually while making my brekkie this morning, I happened to look at a box of weetabix minis and I was shocked that they contain over 25g of sugar per 100g.

A lot of these crunch/mini things are basically biscuits. Sugar puffs are almost 50% sugar.

Ready brek is simply overpriced oats. There are a lot of these "easy to cook" porridges out now, overpriced for no good reason, normal oats cook in a microwave just fine for me. Some are probably processed somehow so they cook a minute quicker, but can be 2-3times the price.

That's true - I never got that... I put normal oats in the micro for less than two mins and they come out perfect... I don't need to be any quicker than that thanks - even if I'm late!

For YEARS I thought weetabix were a great healthy cereal, wholegrain and all that jazz - their ads and marketing had a lot to do with that - they suck everyone in!! The THIRD ingredient in Weetabix is sugar - that's tells you everything you need to know. Knowing what I do now about nutrition and fitness I don't touch them. I don't like the taste of them anymore - think I can actually taste the sugar more now too, since I gave up sugary foods.

There was a thread all about breakfast cereals there a while ago, Best Cereal, I think sugar-free Alpen was mentioned there.

No added sugar. There is still 15.9% sugar in it, albeit from fruit & naturally occuring sugars in the grains.

Most of these products are overpriced. It is cheaper to get oats and just add the fruit you want.
Alpen No Added Sugar contains the following ingredients listed in order of amount used.

Wholegrain Wheat (42%), Wholegrain Rolled Oats (36%), Raisins (15%), Dried Skimmed Milk, Dried Milk Whey, Roasted Sliced Nuts (3%) (Hazelnuts & Almonds), Malted Barley Extract, Salt.
And you can choose to leave out the salt.

Marketers are lying scum, and it is getting worse. But there is no secret to what is in products, just read the ingredients list & nutritional info and make up your own mind.

Weetabix contains the following ingredients listed in order of amount used.

Wholegrain Wheat (95%), Malted Barley Extract, Sugar, Salt, Niacin, Iron, Thiamin (B1), Riboflavin (B2), Folic Acid.
So the 3rd ingredient is sugar, the second is also basically sugar too. Why they still put salt in is beyond me.

    Nutrition per serving per 100g
    Energy (Kilojoules) 537kJ 1432kJ
    Energy (Calories) 127kcal 338kcal
    Protein 4.3g 11.5g
    Carbohydrate 25.7g 68.4g
    (of which sugars) 1.7g 4.4g
    Fat 0.8g 2g
    (of which saturates) 0.2g 0.6g
    Fibre 3.8g 10g
    (soluble) 0.9g 2.3g
    (insoluble) 2.9g 7.7g
    Sodium 0.10g 0.26g
    Salt Equivalent 0.24g 0.65g

    Vitamins
    Thiamin (B1) 0.4mg 1.2mg
    Niacin 5.7mg 15.3mg
    Riboflavin (B2) 0.5mg 1.4mg
    Folic Acid 64.0µg 170µg

    Minerals
    Iron 4.5mg 11.9mg

so 4.4% sugars. but the wheat will have some natural sugars too.

RE: Weetabix and sugar being the third ingredient.

    So what??

Look at the nutritional break down. 4.4g of sugar. A whopping 17 kcals of 338 (per 100g).

The reason it's the thrid ingriedient is because Wholegain Wheet makes up 95% of the total product.

It's pointless just looking at the ingriedients when 95% of the product is made up of the first one listed. There's only so much more they can add in so it will naturally appear higher up on the list. And if it's something as insignficant as 4g of sugar in a 100g serving then I think people need to step back and look at the facts before they get worried it's going to kill their diet.

Just going back to the ready-brek there lads, I agree it's simply over-priced oats but it very handy with protein shakes. Simply throw a scoop in with your protein to up the calorie/carb content for PWO shake. Because its milled, it mixes really easy.

I am open to correction here if anyone more learned see's anything wrong with this?!?!

Yes, this is a fitness forum and people are very diet conscious etc, but come on people, it's a couple of grams of sugar. Push the boat out, live a little, stop worrying over every tiny aspect of every single meal. You get more sugar in a very small handfull of raisins and there's about 3g sugar per 100ml in beer.

Oats are one if not the most recommended best cereals. If you want to take it one step more and have an even healthier breakfast check out oat bran. It’s a bit like ready break. Dash of honey, few rasins and chopped nuts and its well tasty.

It is only a small amount of sugar but it depends on what your goals are. If you are trying to lose fat, then you'd want to steer clear of them and choose a better option, as they do contain added sugar. You'd be better off with oats or sugar free Alpen for example. If you are simply watching out for your health or just getting fitter etc, then they'd be a good choice, better than any of the rest of the cereals you see around.

You're arguing a moot point. 4g of sugar in your breakdast cereal is not going to negatively affect your diet if you're doing everything else right.

2 people, both with the exact same diet and activity levels, one eats porridge in the morning, the other Weetabix. Do you think there'll actually be any difference in the weight they've lost after 6 weeks?

Yeah I have to agree here. Its really goal dependant

Don't forget milk's sugar content also
