    I'm thinking of planning a trip to the US next March which would involve visiting New York and Chicago (3 flights in total) and have the following questions:

    Rather than booking individual flights, is it possible to book a 'package'
    Has anyone stayed in in NYC Hostel?
    Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel?
    Are the 'city pass' attraction discount tickets still available?

    Thanks in advance.

    I wanted to book 3/4 days in New York for a middle-aged couple. What would the best place to go for a package deal? Is it worth it for only 3 or 4 days? Can anyone think of any better ideas?

    I'm going for a week end of November. I spent 3,000 for six night in Fitzpatricks plus flights for 2 of us . Booked through AmericanHolidays. Looking through the boards its seeming a little expensive. Has anyone else paid this much?

    Our flights are costing €450 each, plus another €500ish each for our hotel for 7 nights. Does seem more expensive but you're staying in a nice hotel.

    Yes - just ring one of the airlines that fly out of ireland to America, and they should be able to sort you out with connecting flights. If you want to go to Chicago first, ring American or Aer Lingus. New York first, ring Delta, Continental, Aer Lingus.
    A lot of airline webistes also give you the option to search for multi-city flights too
    Has anyone stayed in in NYC Hostel?
    Can't help you here
    Can anyone recommend a reasonably priced hotel?
    There are a load of hotels in New York, but on average, the prices are higher. You will get cheaper ones the further away from central Manahattan you stay. What kind of budget per night you got in mind?

    Are the 'city pass' attraction discount tickets still available?
    Yes - http://www.citypass.com/city/ny.html

    From my experience, booking package trips to the States always work out a lot more expensive than booking yourself.

    If you are flexible with your dates, you will get the best prices on the airline tickets. Aer Lingus, Continental, Delta all fly direct from Dublin/Shannon to New York/Newark. And if you live in the West, you can also fly Knock to NYC with FlyGlobeSpan.

    Websites like hotels.com and expedia.com are also good for booking hotels in New York. Be sure to read up on them in advance on tripadvisor and the customer comments on hotels.com and expedia.

    Booking direct will save you money for shopping!

    That seems quite dear. we're going for new years and the flights cost 900 for two and the hotel is $1800 for the Radisson on Lexington for 7 nights so our total package is going to cost around 2200, but we are going at probably the busiest time of the year.

    I stayed in the Radisson Lexington two years ago and have nothing good to say about the place.

    The rooms are old and small. The rooms and bathrooms just seemed dirty. The beds were without doubt the smallest ones I ever stayed in and they charge you for absolutely everything extra they can.

    Location-wise it's great, but if you can, move to a different hotel!

    Just a word to mention an airline that I will be travelling on in a few days. FlyZoom has fairly cheap flights from NY to London. Whether or not London-NY-London is cheap; I haven't checked. I don't mean to be advertising but it was a pretty good deal for me (one way 450$ - but some are advertised at 200$ a return iirc).

    I will be going to NYC soon and have booked an apartment through www.vrbo.com (Vacation rentals by owner) Has anyone used this site before in NYC? any thoughts? Found a good priced apartment off Lex Ave. Looks small though!

    Waste of money, not high enough to be worthwhile and the view is obstructed on about 40-50% of the rotation. The best viewing in my opinion is Top of the Rock, and there are good restaurants in Times Square - Ruby Foos and Carmines.

    I'm heading to NY in a week and a half, have never been to the states before, someone was telling me that you have to register to fly 2 days beforehand, do anyone have any info on this?

    Thanks

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 24,924 ✭✭✭✭BuffyBot

    Register?

    You'll have to provide what is called Advanced Passenger Information to your airline before you fly. If you booked online, it can normally be entered online at their website. If not, don't worry - they'll do it at check-in

    All it is

    * Full name (last name, first name, middle name if applicable)
    * Gender
    * Date of Birth
    * Nationality
    * Country of residence
    * Travel document type (normally passport)
    * Travel document number (expiry date and country of issue for passport)
    * Address of the first night spent in the U.S. (Not required for U.S. nationals, Legal Permanent Residents, or Alien Residents of the U.S. entering the U.S.)

    Hi,

    Going to NY this Thursday for 5 nights, could somebody recommend some good bars especially with good live music..

    I was also thinking of getting tickets for the Boxing on Saturday night in MSG (Sugar Shane Mosley v Miguel Cotto) should be a great fight but cheapest tickets are 100 dollars for third tier tickets (301). Does anybody know if the seats would be OK...

    Thanks

    Lucky you - wish it was me. A great place to go for live music is the Red Lion on 151 Bleeker Street - pretty cool crowd - probably more of a studenty lot.

    ARe you booking on ticketmaster for Madison SQ? If so, then click on the viewing of the arena and how the seats are placed. If 3rd tier tickets you'll have a fair idea of where you're sitting based on the chart. Expect to pay a lot of any boxing match.

    Have a great time.

    They were OK for ice hockey or basketball but for boxing might be a bit far out. You can check the view from each box on the MSG website. If 301 is in the corners I'd leave it tbh. If its at the side, you should be OK

    I'm thinking of heading to New York in Feb with my partner. Anyone recommend a nice clean hostel that offers private rooms? Hotels are out of my budget.

    Thanks

    Try usit - based on their website, they specialise in 'student, youth and independent travel' so not just student related. I know they have a location on aston quay - if you go in person vs. book via their website, they will perhaps recommend to you various hostels.

    Another site i've just heard of is hostelworld and not sure but they may have reviews from other travellers listing recommended hostels in new york.

    I am going to NY next year and I have booked a B&B in Greenwich Village. It's $179 a night incl taxes. The room also has a small kitchenette. It got good reviews on tripadvisor and I received very prompt email responses from the owner so fingers crossed it all goes well!!!

    OK, there aren't any real "hostels" in NYC apart from the one in Harlem. And even though Harlem has come a long way, the neighborhood that the hostel is in, is not the best.

    Try the YMCAs, particularly the one near the UN or the West Side Y:

    Thanks Mystery and Dodge for the replies... The tickets were on Ticket master and were in the Corner Dodge, so I think I will give it a miss... But still will be a great fight, might be on in one of the Bars...

    The Red Roof Inn in Midtown is only $159 per night. Excellent hotel. I know I sound like I'm pimping this place, but it's such good value!

    Just back from NY. Had a great time. Stayed in the Crowne Plaza, Times Square, highly recommed it. Very central.
    Bought loads and wasn't searched coming back through customs in Dublin and saw no one else being searched.
    Went to Woodbury, my advice would be to bring a empty suitcase with you to fill it up. I didn't do it and saw loads doing it, I thought they were mad at the time, I had to buy one out there for $45.

    Went for dinner there one of the nights. Very very nice, really liked it. $70 each fixed price. I got a coors lite and 2 View Fizz cocktails, total bill including tip was $250. Well worth it tho. :)

    Hey all,

    I'm heading to NYC around Xmas time (14-18th Dec).

    I'm staying in the Westin Times Square...anybody stay here before?

    Is there anything I should do in NYC over the Xmas period? I've been there before but it was in the summer.

    I'm guessing the chances of snow are fairly good??

    I have never stayed at that hotel, but Times Square is right in the middle of it all. That is a a very busy time of the year in New York, the streets are very crowded, but the atmosphere is great. Ice skate at Rockefeller Centre (or there is another one in Central park) but there will be long queues. Its worth going to the top of the Empire State building but the queues will be very long (especially in the evening when everyone wants to see the city lights). The weather can be extremely cold in Dec/January and the wind chill is much colder in New York due to the tunnel effects that the streets make.

    I presume you will be doing some Christmas shopping too...?
    Check out this new site i found http://www.shopusa.ie it has great information on stores and outlet malls. I recommend Jersey Gardens, its all indoors and its great!
