Basically, a company has got VoIP to work on the iPhone.

    Sorry mate!
Voice over IP, basically allows you to make calls over your internet connection (or WiFi on the iPhone)

I'm not upto scratch on the whole VoIP thing but I'm sure someone else will come along and explain it better.

    Sorry mate!

Voice Over IP (Internet Protocol) it means you can make and receive calls using just WiFI and not your mobile provider. i.e. calls using the internet.

Have a look at www.skype.com who would be one of the biggest providers of free VOIP software.

Not necessarily free calls, but it's an awful lot cheaper than mobile rates.

If two iphones had the software then yes you could make free calls...

Beta wont be released for 4 weeks though.

Apple has released the iPhone 1.1.1 Software Update to iTunes.

The 154MB download warns that "If you have modified your iPhone's Software, applying this software update may result in your iPhone becoming permanantly inoperable."

Apple previously released a press release saying that users who specifically had SIM unlocked their iPhone should not proceed with the update as it may cause irreversible damange to your iPhone.

Apple's website has been updated with a new video that shows off the latest features of the iPhone update. The video is titled "Wi-Fi Music Store. Ringtones. And more."

    New Features include:

    - iTunes Wi-Fi Music Store
    - Louder speakerphone and receiver volume
    - Home Button double-click shortcut to phone favorites or music controls
    - Space bar double-tap shortcut to intelligently insert period and space
    - Mail attachments are viewable in portrait and landscape
    - Stocks and cities in Stocks and Weather can be re-ordered
    - Apple Bluetooth Headset battery status in the Status Bar
    - Support for TV Out
    - Preference to turn off EDGE/GPRS when roaming internationally
    - New Passcode lock time intervals
    - Adjustable alert volume

Update: Though it was hoped Apple would only be targeting SIM unlockers, the update is confirmed to have broken all 3rd party applications installed via Installer.app. Note that the iPhone will also re-activate itself after installation of the firmware.

    What a crappy update!!

There is absolutly nothing there that should make anyone want to update, just keep your phones the way they are for now guys.

    Ok, Story So Far!!

Firmware version will not brick your iPhone. It will however render it useless until software to activate, jailbreak and unlock it is developed!!

Basically here is the story, as far as i am aware, you CANNOT upgrade the iPhone if an AT&T sim is not present in the iPhone, i think this is a good gesture from Apple as not to accidently damage unlocked iPhones.

When an unlocked iPhone is upgraded, it goes back to the Activatio Screen on the iPhone so it needs to be re-activated! This is fine you might say, lets just re-activate it!! There are 2 problems here:

1: None of the previously working activating software will activate it

    and

2: If your iPhone was unlocked using anySIM, you CANNOT re-activate the iPhone even using the Original AT&T Card. When anySIM is run, it messes up the IMEI code of the iPhone and the IMEI is what apple checks your sim against to activate the iPhone.

If however, you used the iPhoneSimFree app to unlock the iPhone, it CAN be activated using the original sim ad the IPSF unlock does not mess up the IMEI.

Now for some good news, if you can get your hands on an iPhone that still has firmware 1, 1.1 or 1.2, you can still unlock it without too much hassle. You cannot do the restore and upgrade in iTunes however as it will upgrade the phone to 1.11. You will need to download the following file, "iPhone1,1_1.0.2_1C28_Restore.ipsw", then go to itunes and hold the SHIFT key while you click restore. This will allow you to browse to a Restore file. Click on the above file and it will restore the iPhone to 1.02 firmware, then you can just follow the normal unlocking procedure.

By the time the 1.11 firmware iPhones actuallt hit the shelves of Apple shops, which will be in about 3-4 weeks time, there will be software to either unlock them from that firmware version, or we will be able to downgrade them to 1.02, either way we should be fine.

Lastly, for now at least, DO NOT ATTEMPT TO UPGRADE YOUR IPHONE TO 1.11 as if you succeed, you could be waiting awhile to use the iPhone again.

If two iphones had the software then yes you could make free calls...

Any handsets (having truphone installed) with an active truphone connection get free truphone user -> truphone user calls, so any of your mates using it on their supported Nokia's, and they are working on Windows Mobile too... and also the iPhone as you pointed out :)

Just to update on my brother's iphone. He unlocked it sucessfully using the free method and it works perfectly. Now i want one! I know someone else going to new york in a month so what i want to know is if, by then, all iphones come preloaded with the 1.11 firmware is it likely there will be new unlock methods for that version. Also what about the activation process, will there have to be new activation software made?

    Hi rc,

There is a very very very good chance that you WILL be able to unlock the iPhone by then so dont get to worried about it. The problem so far is that Apple have encrypted this version of the firmware where they havnet any of the others.

Nate True, the creator of iBrickr has already extracted some of it so its only a matter of time before where good to go with 1.1.1.

    Hey all,

I just had a look at the meteor price plans for data. http://www.meteor.ie/billpay_calls.html#wap

It works out at €4.92 per mb using GPRS. Is this how much it's going to cost me when I use my iphone for browsing the web, retriving e-mails etc?

Your post isnt exactly iphone related so the mods may want to move it

However for €20 per month you can get 100mb

    Thanks for the advice.

Also, I just set up my iphone a few mins ago.

I notice none of my SIM contacts appear on the iphone? Is it possible to transfer them from the sim to the phone or do I have to enter several hundred contacts in manually?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

What phone have you got besides the iphone? It is not possible to copy sim contact to phone, or access the sim contact from phone you have to use ie nokia manager etc
