I (at last) have an iPhone on its way to me (still hesitant about it tbh) but what I want to ask is, if I unlock/jailbreak it can I still sync it with the contacts I have in my address book?

It looks like Apple is clamping down hard on unlocked iPhons:

Meh full of bull, its already proven it doesnt brick your phone. May make it unusable at THIS PRESENT MOMENT but wouldnt worry about it. Its there own fault(unlocked iphone) for trying the update anyway they were ALL warned.

What phone have you got besides the iphone? It is not possible to copy sim contact to phone, or access the sim contact from phone you have to use ie nokia manager etc

I have a Nokia 8800 Sirocco. Is there any way of saving all the contacts into a file and exporting it to the iphone? It's going to be an awful pain having to type in everyone manually!!

Also, I notice on iTunes "My Phone Number" is wrong. It's obviously also wrong on the phone. Any ideas how to change it?

    Thanks for the advice.

Also, I just set up my iphone a few mins ago.

I notice none of my SIM contacts appear on the iphone? Is it possible to transfer them from the sim to the phone or do I have to enter several hundred contacts in manually?

Use your old phone to xfer contacts to phone, sync with outlook and then sync using iTunes

At the moment what does somene do if they buy an iphone with the new firmware installed. I understand that you'd have to wait for new unlocking methods to come out but can you still activate it using the same old methods (ie to use it as ipod etc without the phone part)? Apparently the new firmware is proving harder to crack-not good news;http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/28/iphone-update-facts-and-fiction/

My question is: How can we ensure that iPhones bought now are updated to 1.0.2 (which can be downloaded from Apple) instead of 1.1.1? From what I hear iTunes "restores" to the latest firmware.

This is related to US iPhones.

    iPhone: 90 Days Later
from The Unofficial Apple Weblog (TUAW) by Erica Sadun
    Filed under: iPhone

With images of unlocked iPhones dancing in my head, today I gave AT&T a call. I confirmed that I now had my iPhone account active & in good standing for 90 days (the normal threshold for permitted unlocking) and requested a subsidy unlock for overseas travel. They transfered me to the technical support department, where I chatted with support rep Michael G.

Michael told me that there were no unlock codes available for the iPhone due to the exclusive agreement between Apple and AT&T. This includes countries like the UK and Germany, where the iPhone would soon be on sale. "We simply do not have unlock codes for them," he confirmed. I would have to use International roaming.

He recommended using a cheap disposable phone instead. With my account over 90 days old and in good standing, I was entitled to unlock a phone -- even if not the iPhone. He provided an unlock code for my little Motorola disposable.

So where does that leave us? Michael suggested that customers send their complaints directly to the FCC (1-888-CALL-FCC). He thinks that after 1 year, the FCC will force AT&T and Apple to provide unlocks for their customers

Is this the right way to go about it. The phone doesnt show you sim contacts from the off?

download the 1.0.2 which can be got, disconnect from the internet when restoreing the iphone. that way you cant update to 1.1.1

Its not possible to access your sim contacts from the phone nor copy them from the sim to the phone. Very annoying.

Dan can your contacts be organised in the iphone by the first names rather than the surnames? I just synced my contacts into outlook and they are organised by first names. That is the way they are in my phone I have now too

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

Yeah you can change the way they display in the iphone.

Can someone clear this up for me. Engadget are saying there is a way to downgrade your iphone to the old firmware if it already has the new one installed. What does this mean for iphones that come pre-installed with the new firmware (not activated etc)? Say if I get an iphone that comes with 1.1.1 already installed, will this method work for this model given that it hasn't been activated or does the phone need to be up and running proper?
    http://www.engadget.com/2007/09/29/iphone-1-1-1-to-1-0-2-downgrade-instructions-released/
I have an opportunity to get an iphone from newyork in 4 weeks time but by then they will probably have the new firmware on them so I'm worried i will never be able to unlock it- have the hackers given up on trying to crack the 1.1.1 firmware and are instead only looking to downgrade phones to 1.0.2?

The "downgrade" only enables wifi and other abilities, they have yet to crack the baseband firmware to enable GSM calls/texts etc.

So no, you'll have to wait if you get a 1.1.1. And no the hackers haven't given up. I feel that eventually we will have a way to downgrade properly or unlock 1.1.1 outright.

Anyone know the setting to get the iphone to connect to the web on Vodafone. Probably a daft question, but I can't find them anywhere.

    Hey guys,
Got me iPhone and love it. Bro sent it from states through ordinary post, no issues with customs at all, he only sent phone and USB cable, took it out of original box.

Me loves it so far, unlocked and on Vodafone. YouTube does not work at all, even when connected to WiFi, anyone had problems with it? I have not tried it with EDGE. Also, I am SO pissed off that you cannot manually manage your music on it, is there a way around this? I have had iPods for years now and never was into the whole synching thing so always loved to manually manage my music, nothing like the ability to drag and drop. I will be very dissapointed if there is not some way to do this with the iPhone also. Perhaps there is a 3rd party app like Ephod that works with it?

    Cheers,
    Mark
