    CNBC reporting this today.
    http://www.cnbc.com/id/20960584

We knew it might cause trouble in the future but killing it is a spet too far. Wonder what the future apple updates will contain to improve the phone?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,656 ✭✭✭bennyx_o

Basically what Apple are saying is future updates will brick unlocked iPhones. It's not illegal to unlock the phone, I'm sure there'll be a fix for it though.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 690 ✭✭✭Frankmagnet

Its a bit of a pain if that does happen and some of the future updates do contain something that could add to the phone, ie video recording etc

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

Just dont update your phone until ya no what they do...Apple are just trying to make people panic and its working.

Right here's a question no-one has been able to answer for me.

O2 Ireland will probably have the same set up as O2 UK; 18 month contract, €399 to buy and a €55 a month data plan.

Now what happens after 18 months?

Will O2 give you an unlock code so you can go to another carrier or say to you that you have to renew your contract?

I have an unlocked iPhone but I am still interested to hear opinions.

my iphone arrived today. am i'm trying to unlock it as i write this.

has anyone unlocked theirs using unlockthatiphone's tutorial on page 18 ofthis thread?

should i remove the at&t sim before attempting unlock or does that not matter?

Apple will prob release a new version of the iphone anyway, Its a hard one to call really thats a year a half thats a LONGtime apple might have released a sim free version. Apple will release new phones ie upgrades on the iphone all the time.No one knows if o2 wil get the Irish Contract, if they did they would of released it with the UK release, so as far as i am concerns its open ball to networks...But all those questions are to early to call...WAY to early.

    Good news ppl

    http://www.tuaw.com/2007/09/25/iphone-dev-team-issues-statement/

A spokesman for the iPhone Dev Team, the group that developed the iPhone unlock has issued a statement condemning Apple and promising a tool in the next week which will restore your iPhone to a factory-fresh state. The unlock, he writes, made the iPhone free and useful world-wide, not just in certain countries. The text of the statement, with modifications for grammar and spelling, follows after the break.
9/25 Statement from the iPhone unlockers

Based on download numbers, the iPhone Dev Team believes that, worldwide, several hundred thousand people have unlocked their iPhones. That number continues growing every day. The removal of the lock, a bug, was a major step forward in the iPhone development. It made the iPhone free and useful to anyone, not only to those in certain countries.

Apple now announces that the next firmware update, expected later this week, will possibly break the handset of all of us free users in the World. It speaks of "damage" done to the firmware and "unauthorized access" to our own property, The removal of those firmware problems, which were built in in favor for AT&T, does not cause "damage" as they want to make us believe.

We will provide you with a tool in the next week which will be able to recover your nck counter and seczones and even enables you to restore your phone to a Factory-like state.

In the meantime we advise you not to update your free iPhone with the upcoming firmware. Wait for the next version to be fixed to work properly with your carrier and not break your phone.

As an avid Mac user and general Apple follower, they don't tend to mince words... so i'd be somewhat concerned at this bit of news!
    Apple: We'll kill hacked iPhones
    Unlocked iPhones may become inoperable
    Jim Dalrymple, Macworld US

Unlocked iPhones may become inoperable, according to an Apple warning that comes in response to the growing number of third-party hacks for its high-profile handset.

"Apple has discovered that many of the unauthorised iPhone unlocking programs available on the internet cause irreparable damage to the iPhone's software, which will likely result in the modified iPhone becoming permanently inoperable when a future Apple-supplied iPhone software update is installed," Apple said.

Unlocking the iPhone is a process that hackers have developed to allow the device to work with SIM cards from carriers other than AT&T Wireless, Apple's preferred carrier in the US. The applications and instructions developed by hackers over the past couple of months are freely available on the internet, but users may wish they waited.

The first hint that Apple would take a more aggressive stance towards unlocking hacks came last week during the company's London press event to announce the UK release ship date for the iPhone. Asked what Apple was doing to stop people from unlocking their phones, CEO Steve Jobs called it "a cat and mouse game".

"I'm not sure if we are the cat or the mouse. People will try to break in, and it's our job to stop them breaking in," he added.

Apple made it very clear that it would not be responsible for any damage caused by the installation of third-party unlocking software.

"Users who make unauthorised modifications to the software on their iPhone violate their iPhone software licence agreement and void their warranty," Apple said. "The permanent inability to use an iPhone due to installing unlocking software is not covered under the iPhone's warranty."

In the UK, analysts have warned that iPhone owners who attempt to unlock the handset and use it with operators other than O2 may face huge monthly bills.

"At the moment, as a consumer, you need to be very careful about unlocking the iPhone, and know how you want to use it," said Gartner's Carolina Milanesi. "If you unlock it, you are not going to have a flat rate, and you will not have access to the 7,500 hotpots."

Hey Dan. Its been a long day, could you explain what this means for us? Cheers:D

Does this mean that a new apple firmware update will only brick the iphones already unlcoked and if someone had a brand new one (not even activated) they should just activate it, install the new firmware and then go on with the usual unlocking process? Or will apple have made sure that entirely new unlocking methods will have to be created from scratch and existing programs like "anysim" will be obsolete? Basically what I want to know is should someone who hasn't unlocked their iphone wait until thursday to see if the firmware update changes everything or just do it now as normal (and not install the new firmware when it comes out)?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 6,658 ✭✭✭PowerHouseDan

I think what they are saying is that you need to lock you phone. Download and install the new firmware then unlock it again.. However I would not do it until we know that we can unlock it with the new firmware.

I think that is whats going on...

So dont update until we know what the story is but thats the idea of the new software being released that iphone dev.

im sure apple are smart enough to run these unlockers against the update before releasing it. IMO its at&t who are worried, cause of the damage it does to their revenue in USA, as opposed to any other region, and indeed O2 heads will be watching closely to the outcome (s)

after all ,apple have got paid for the phone regardless, and considering PR why brick it?. the bad PR would surely outweigh the new sales generated from users with bricked units.

I also think apple foresaw this happening and did not really care, after all they have to sell you a phone regardless! Mr jobs is a smart cookie and he will protect HIS interests first, and "publicly" the carriers second.

it was apples business rules , to gain a slice of carrier revenue , that prompted locking in the first place. again IMO apple should have released this product simFREE at the outset, and let the carriers fight for market share.

Then we, as consumers , would be the real winners!

Day 3 in (very) sunny texas with my unlocked iphone, and there was news reports regarding the Apple statement this morning, but even the anchor and the 'tech guru' agreed that it's very bad PR if they start deliberately f@cking peoples phones up.

The tech guy's opinion was, as written here earlier, that there will be a hack to restore the phone to factory presets with the new firmware, which can then be hacked/unlocked again.

Have to wait until I get back to Ireland with it to test all the functionality, but having been previously very committed to Windows Mobile, I have to say I likey very very much so far (apart from the infuriating un-ipod like music transfer nonsense).

    Hi guys,

I know everyone is kinda freaking out abit about the new firmware etc so i tought i might clear a few things up.

First of all, ANYONE WHO HAS AN UNLOCKED IPHONE MUST NOT UPDATE TO FIRMWARE 1.11. Now, before i go any further, i want everyone to understand one thing, IF you decide that firmware update 1.11 has just TO much cool stuff NOT to install it then your gonna be in for a tough ride. First of all your iPhone will have to be returned to its virgin state, a task that currently requires you to copy certain files to the iPhone, SSH to it and run Command Line commands to do so, not ideal for people who arent too techie!!

Within the next week, the iPhone Dev Team will release a GUI App that will do this automatically, this should be easy enough for ANYONE to do.

HOWEVER, this isnt the problem, the problem is UNLOCKING the 1.11 Firmware. First of all, this isnt going to be possible straight away. All previous firmware updates have rendered the programs we use to activate and JailBreak the iPhones useless and we can expect the same this time.

Until the clever people at iBrick (Windows) and iFuntastic (MAC) can get their software working with iPhones on firmware version 1.11, there is NO POINT in doing a Virgin reflash as you will just be stuck with a locked iPhone.

Once these guys have got their software working, THEN we will have to wait for a NEW app to unlock the iPhone as anySIM ver 1.01 will most likly also not work anymore.

We are expecting this Update tomorrow so when it comes, we will be working just as hard as the Dev Team in trying to Unlock them. Once we have a solution that works, we will Post the instructions on our website and here also for anyone who just has to Update to Update.

To be honest, i cant see them releaseing any MUST HAVE features in this update, so i am quite content in leaving my iPhone the way it is. The one feature i am really looking forward to however, and it MAY be included in this firmware update is Flash compatibility.

Finally, as for Apples comments on this new update rendering hacked iPhones as bricks, this is just a scare tactic. No software can have Unrepairable damage done to it, it is just software, it can be re-loaded and replaced.

    Hope this helped guys!!

    Hi Bobby,

All of our iPhones next week will more than likely have Firmware version 1.02 on them unless the software is released over the weekend to unlock them on version 1.11. If the sotware is available, they will be version 1.11.

The chances of getting an iPhone with firmware version 1.02 on it in 2 weeks are very very high as they are built in China and then shippend to a US distribution Plant, it usually take 3-4 weeks to get the latest stock.

I guess the firmware version depends on the popularity of the apple or at&t store you are going to purchase from. Last thursday my cousin bought my iphone in her nearby at&t store in Portland, Oregon and when I received it and unlocked it yesterday, it was version 1.0.0 until i upgraded it to version 1.0.2
So i suppose chances are high that there are a lot of iphones yet to be sold before the 1.1.1 versions are. well that's if they rotate the stock. But as unlockthatiphone said, it would take 3 or 4 weeks to be shipped to the stores
