Might be sh*te but that just shows the tastes of the average CD buyer in Ireland.
As for banning it because it uses the word suicide, how stupid are the people making these decisions?!?
Hearing the word suicide is no more likely to set someone off than the old Nike catchphrase "Just Do It" (yes I remember the X-files episode but that is fiction).
There are many songs out there that much better capture the mindset of someone feeling suicidal, and as such could possibly cause a relapse, some of which people listen merrily to not realising what it's actually about. But then the amount of times I've had to show people song lyrics to make them believe a song is about a certain thing I can only assume the average music listener blocks out the lyrics of most songs.

I would do a much simpler option and ban FM104. Anyone noticed the fact that they play every song speeded up by about 10% so they can get more ads in. And they seem to tell their DJ's the faster than Dave Fanning talk is the ideal!

I can imagine why people who have lost a friend/ family member would find it distressful to listen to this song but its a sh*te song neway and banning it will only make it more popular

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kurt_cobain

"In a February 1993 interview with The Advocate, Cobain claimed that he used to spray paint "God is Gay" on pickup trucks around Aberdeen. Cobain also claimed he was arrested in 1985 for spray-painting "HOMO SEX RULES" on a bank.[9] However, Aberdeen police records show that the phrase for which he was arrested was actually "Ain't got no how watchamacallit." with every "t" written four times larger than the other letters."

yep, not an attention seeking bone in his body
It would be also called being absolutly messed up on heroin, your saying you never did somthing stupid when you were drunk? now multiply that by 30 and you get the general idea. Besides that, at the time the entire lot of americas teens were ready to revolt against society as a whole refusing to be what it wanted them to be so its pretty understandable if you ask me.

Anyway getting back on topic cause this nirvana thing is going way way off. I think this is absolute bollox, its political correctness gone MAD. What happend to freedom of speach?

You cannot(well should not really in this day and age) ban a song because it has the word suicide in it, you dont see shakespears plays being banned because there is murder, suicide etc in it, you dont see the bible being banned cause theres an extremely gruesome crucifiction in it. Hell you dont even see shows that are AIMED at teenagers(i dunno like hollyoaks etc) banned even when they show drugs house partys depression suicide etc in it either.

Imo i know people who are suicidal are fragile but in all fairness hearing a word in a song is not going to push them over the edge 99.9999999999999999% of the time. Its usually modern society as a whole, if you want to cut down the suicide rate your better off moaning about how models are so skinny and stuff like that and how there putting pressure on youth of today. You dont see them trying to ban that type of stuff.

oooh, now that Idid not know
However, this may not be used to undermine "public order or morality or the authority of the State". Furthermore, the constitution explicitly requires that the publication of "blasphemous, seditious, or indecent matter" be a criminal offence

I did know about this though... some freedom :)

    God's a wanker.

    *waits for the police*

You'll have a long wait, I'm top of their most wanted in this regard and they've yet to catch me, sometimes I even manage to say things that are blasphemous, seditious and indecent all in one! :p

I dunno, i mean have you heard the insipid little ditty in question?
I think it'd do wonders for everyones ears if it was banned, all copies destroyed and the singer placed in a safe, coated in concrete and dumped in the atlantic trench.

Nobody is saying the song is a master piece

People need to deal with there issues properly, banning people from singing about suicide is stupid.

You guys realize this song was played in america and ireland for ages without anyone saying anything, then MTV in the US banned(well not banned, but cut out the word "suicidal") it and now everyone is jumping on the bandwagon just in case.

Aye, Smack meh B|tch up was preety cool. Would never have heard it if it wasn't banned.

The US Americans (:)) have gotten rid of the part that says suicidal.
It's a bad song, burn it.

Songs should be banned now? Lets ban words! In fairness. If you complain about lyrics in a song, you must have SFA going wrong in your life. God forbid that some horrible does actually happen you or someone close to you, how the hell will you cope with that if you get worked up over this?

Absolutly ridiculous banning this song(which I secretly admit to liking)! The poor kid is just warbling about being in love, nothing malicious at all.Anyone with half a brain can see that.
Starting from today,I am officially never listening to fm104 ever again.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 4,658 ✭✭✭Patricide

Yeah I think even talking about suicide should be banned. A suicidal person could see this thread and kill themselves IMHO

Right, so we're pretty much all agreed that the banning of this song is a load of ****e then (apart from the 800 people who made the joke 'yeah the song should be banned because its utter ****e AHAHAHAAHAHAHAHAHA") ?

How about we do something about it ? I mean, hundreds of people have viewed this thread, a few hundred text messages to FM104 could, at the very least, be a laugh.

If you want to contact them over the web : http://www.fm104.ie/contactus.asp

Or you can text them, I believe, at 53104, or ring them on 01 500 66 00.

For every one normal person who makes the effort to do that there's 20 psychos with no life who will complain. Nutcases get their way because they don't have anything better to be doing and are generally militant about their insane notions. So we're screwed.

I did it anyway, just to get the ball rolling.

    what I said was:

"Censoring the word 'suicidal' in that sean kingston song is an absurd level of censorship. How that line can be offensive to the point of changing it is beyond me. Fix it before nothing can be played. Why do we need to be protected. We can make our own choices.

I won't be as eager to listen to fm104 if you insist on appeasing the nutters who complain. Most people don't care, but they don't say that because there's no point in saying thanks for not censoring - we expect that!

Just keep out bad language, don't butcher the song (Beautiful girls is bad enough already)"

    There you go. Happy Tuesday.

The song should be banned just for making a mockery of "Stand By Me"
