I'm curious to know how much you guys spend a month on stuff like Protein and Creatine. Judging by the Maximuscle brochure, I'd be needing nearly €300 a month, which sounds crazy.

1 months protein or equivilant weight gain formula (whey?), 1 months Creatine - how much should I be expecting to pay?

First of all put down the maximuscle brochure and then throw it out.

You don't really need weightgainer, you just need to eat more.

A 5lb tub of protein usually lasts me 6 weeks. You should be able to get it for 40-45E.

A 1kg tub of creatine lasts me 6months or so.

go talk to Mickk in the supplement store on camden street or Jon in pronutrition in phibsboro and they will be able to give you better quality stuff and much cheaper prices.

Just remember food is your friend and the best thing for bulking up

yes, yes, yes and ... yes. Eat above your calorie requirements and lift really heavy stuff.

I'm not oversimplifying, it is that straightforward. Protein powder is nothing mroe than a convenient way to get the exact same protein that you ingest when you eat any complete protein source: meat, milk and eggs.

Creatine doesn't make you gain weight at all - it may temproarily cause you to hold water, but its use is as an extra energy system while will help you lift more which will in turn help you get bigger if you eat more alongside it.

Make a list of clean foods you enjoy eating. If they aren't already on the list add lots of good oils (almond, sesame, walnut etc) and natural but butters - peanut, cashew, hazelnut - to get your good fats in and keep your calories high. Eat them a lot. ;)

Do you use steroids or igf-1 or something!?

Seriously I don't see how you need all of them, what's the breakdown?

I'm in a rush so it's something like this: (this month I've bought **** all actually cos of exams I'm snowed under but usually...)
    USN mass fuel - 80e
    usn carb shake - 30e
    animal pak + stak 2 + sometimes the pump - 70-110
eyeq (fish oils and helps me concentrate...raelly!!) - not sure, 20-30e
udos oil and floridix magnesium - 30e?

I spend a lot on this **** and it definitely helps me. And don't start goin "why dont u just eat food" I ****ing cant seem to find the time to get 6-7k cals of pure food into me during the day when I'm out and about, I find it easier slug a shake and take capsules.

I think spending 300 euro a month would make me find time to eat proper meals pretty quickly. I don't think theres that much difference between an expensive weight gainer and a normal protein shake with a cup of oats in it, cept a big difference in price. Unless your a competing bodybuilder 300 is overkill for most people.

Yeah? Well then don't spend it

Thanks for the responses guys. What I think I'm hearing is that I should be able to get all the protein I need from a good diet, rather than supplements, and that Creatine will help me work harder and recover faster, which would definitely help.

One question though, seeing as I'll be doing my weights workout in the morning - would a protein shake or something similar not be of benefit immediately after the workout considering I won't be able to get anything with a lot of protein into me after it?

Carbs are the most important to eat after a workout. High GI like a banana is ideal. You could take a protein shake before or after your workout.

You dont need Animal pak, just take a multi vit.

Seriously what a waste of money.

You obviously have no regard for money or your getting it too easy.

    Whats the carb shake for?

Why do you need fish oils and Udos oils?

Hardly any bulker eats up to 7000 calories a day.

Thats a bit harsh if he has the money he has the right to spend it on whatever he wants. Just because he can afford it and others might not be able to does not mean his perception of the value of money is any less. he might not need it, thats besides the point, i don't need an expensive laptop but i can afford one and i want one so i have one.

Good diet and whey protein with glucose/maltodextrin immediate after workout. Maybe a Glutamine supplement as well but supplements should not be that expensive. The guy spending loads on supplements probably saves it on food but real food is much better.
If time is an issue cook up loads of chicken fillets at the one time and keep them in freezer and leave to defrost over night. Cooking in bulk in advance makes time not an issue.

I'm not too sure what the story with glutamine is. Reasearch doesn't seem to support it but I've been taking 5-10g a day and I'm recovering super quick. Dunno if that's solely down to the glutamine or increased volume tolerance tho.

Hanley I probably eat 6k a day easily when training. I'm not eating right at the moment because I'm studying non-stop and haven't trained much either which is obvious from me journal.
Esse - The supps I take consistently are my weight gainer, animal pak/stak (a multivitamin would more than likely suffice but I do feel slightly stronger while using the stak), carb shake before training and udo's/magnesium. I don't use creatine as I get acne from it. I honestly feel better and have more energy when I'm taking them consistently than I do without. Suck my balls.
And about my money? I can spend it any ****ing way I want. Who the hell are you to tell me how to spend money and that I have no respect for it.

nah but I remember seeing a piece on one of the british Olympic rowers who went through 7-8000 calories a day and then they had some tubby reporter trying to eat exactly the same amount of food and who failed miserably, quite funny actually

Was surfing beside him in Lahinch recently - man is a tank.

On a side note, I've easily been downing 6 - 7,000 kcals/day for the last 2 months. It can be done. Sure a few bowls of muesli for breakfast with a light topping of a bag of fun-size kit-kats will have you well on your way! :p

6k-7k would be quite easy I'd imagine. In POC's case the guy is just mammoth, he easily trains twice a day 5-6 days a week in the off season.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 1,479 ✭✭✭t-ha

BTW, in answer to the original question, about 20 - 30 euro at the moment. I have had much higher bills though, mostly when I was experimenting with different supplements.
