If you have answered YES to any one of the questions, there is a definite warning that you may be alcoholic.

If you have answered YES to any two, the chances are that you are an alcoholic.

If you have answered YES to three or more, you are definitely an alcoholic.

    1. Is drinking making your home life unhappy?
    2. Does your drinking make you careless of your family’s welfare?
    3. Do you drink because you are shy with other people?
    4. Is drinking affecting your reputation?
    5. Do you drink to escape from worries or trouble?
    6. Do you drink alone?
    7. Have you lost time from work due to drinking?
    8. Has your ambition decreased since drinking?
    9. Has your efficiency decreased since drinking?
    10. Is drinking jeopardising your job or business?
    11. Have you ever felt remorse after drinking?
    12. Are you in financial difficulties as a result of drinking?
    13. Do you turn to or seek an inferior environment when drinking?
    14. Do you crave a drink at a definite time daily?
    15. Does drinking cause you to have difficulty in sleeping?
    16. Do you want a drink the next morning?
    17. Do you drink to build up your self-confidence?
    18. Have you ever had a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking?
    19. Has your doctor ever treated you for drinking?
    20. Have you ever been in hospital or prison because of drinking?

I dont have much time for AA, I think its a manipulative and damn right weird organisation; it takes religion to creepy new levels for me.

Now am I right in thinking that this test would make anyone out to be an alcoholic. Yes some of the questions are worrying, but some are pretty much a given?

    Or am I in denial?

I think they should scale the questions, so that if you answer yes to some - you need to be careful and more responsible - and then if you say yes to the the more extreme ones, that you definitely should seek help. Otherwise, yes, everyone I know would be alcoholics according to this!

I'm 19, and I drink a hell of a lot less than most people I know. I'd maybe go out once or twice a month, yet according to that I'm definitely an alcoholic.

Yeah same old shíte. If you binge drink (more than 4 pints? They'll probably say it's more than 2 these days), or if you have ever drank too much on a night out then you're an alcoholic.

If you answered yes to a couple of the questions than maybe you should cut down (been in hospital or prison for drinking), but it doesn't make you an alcoholic.

I answered no to all of those questions (I don't drink :p ), so I passed. But if everyone I knew took this this test, they'd all be alcoholics. Granted, some of them really are alcoholics, but most of them just enjoy having a drink.

Remember that it says you may be an alcoholic if you say 'yes'. There should be numerical qualifiers there too though - for example, have you suffered a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking on five or more occasions? and such.

Hmm. I is confused. I only answered yes to two of those (do you drink alone? yes, nothing beats sitting in the sun on a friday evening with a cold beer and a newspaper) and do you drink to increase confidence? (thats not WHY i drink, but it does help sometimes). Other than that it was all no's, and I thought I WAS an alcoholic.

All my dreams are shattered. Damn you AA for making me realise I dont have a drink problem.

It says may but also says
If you have answered YES to three or more, you are definitely an alcoholic
My mother who has probably a glass of wine per month and 2 or 3 at christmas is definitely an alcoholic, according to that.
    12. Are you in financial difficulties as a result of drinking?
Obviously this is not taking into account the price of drink in Ireland.
There should be numerical qualifiers there too though - for example, have you suffered a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking on five or more occasions? and such.
Even that doesnt take things into account. Alcoholism in my book is addiction to alcohol. I guy might have only drank on new years eve 5 times in his teens and blacked out, might not have touched a drop since.

Has your ambition decreased since drinking?

What the hell kind of question is that? Since drinking when? I had my first drink at 16 and back then my only ambition was to get drunk and possibly get me paws on that philomena that lived down the road...so technically my ambitions have increased greatly since drinking..muppets

    18. Have you ever had a complete loss of memory as a result of drinking?Never. Just wondering if this happened to anyone how one will rerember that you have lost memory :D never happened to me

There are two types of memory loss, fragmented and en bloc.

Fragmented is the common one, where you dont realise that memories are missing (cos you can piece together the night pretty well). You may remember the missing fragments when prompted.

I think everyone has experienced fragmented memory loss at some stage of their drinking.

En bloc is rarer where an entire time period is missing. Whats weird is that you can be perfectly aware and active during the period you cant remember ie yo have not passed out.

Whats rarer still and has happened to me is an en bloc blackout where the period doesnt end in sleep. Ie normally you cant remember the last 2 hours before you passed out etc. I had an experience where one moment I was sitting down chatting and the very next instant (no haziness inbetween) I was in a bathroom in some apartment apparently just after taking a wizz (and I got in in the bowl too).

It was immediately obvious I had a severe memory gap. As you can imagine this was very very disconcerting.

Said YES to 8. All the past tense questions are what piss me off. Surely that just means i may at one point have been an alcoholic or at risk of being.
Oh, yeh and i think i've suffered every form of drink induced memory loss known to man.
Still missing 4 hours from a couple of weeks ago. I was cycling home from town, blinked and it was 6:45, i was happily walking down the street bout 3 miles from last point. Haven't seen my bike since.
    Maybe i do have a problem...
