What way do libaries work? If i write a book I want people to buy it so i make money, but if it goes to a libary everyoen can read it without paying for it! How does that work!?

I have read books from the library that I enjoyed so much I went out and bought the book so I could have my own copy. I might never have considered it if I had not had the opportunity to buy it. Libraries also encourage people to read and as such improve literacy. When I was a kid I used to go to the library once or twice a week to borrow books. Now I buy several books a week, if I hadn't developed a love of reading as a child I wouldn't buy books as often as I do.

Got a letter stating I've to serve a one year ban from all Dublin City librarys for leaving 4 books back 3 months late.:(
Meh, I deserved it.

Excellent tip for ye.
Go to your local St. Vincent DePaul or other charity shop.

My local one sells books for 50c each and I just give them back when I'm finished.

Ahh, those things. They built a library near me recently. It's full of those
book thingys plus you can access the interweb there.

Would there be restrictions on what can be accessed there?
Like Boards.ie for instance.:)

I honestly wouldn't worry or lose too much sleep over it love. Most LIBRARIES accept books of a certain standard, I believe being able to spell helps so I'm sure EVERYONE will be able to manage with what is there already....:rolleyes:

Trust me, even in a "libary", I don't think people will be rushing to read this book

You're legally obliged to provide copies of your books to certain libraries for free.

No problems accessing boards.ie from the library interwebs as far as I'm aware. At least not in Fingal County Council libraries anyway. Staff are blocked from it though. (*weeps*)

There are the obvious restrictions on pornography and chat rooms.

That was really retarded of me to spell LIBRARY wrong :-) as i was spelling it I was looking at it asking myself if it was spelt correct! Its just one of them words I could never spell correctly until now.

Anyway I dont have a book or anything, i was just thinking about it whilst reading a book when the author mentioned that he reckons he loses a fortune by people reading his books through borrowing them from a library! So i just thought i'd ask.

I presume video shops work in a different way, as in everytime the video is rented the film company get a loyalty?

Think you mean "royalty". And I doubt it; but I could be wrong; but I doubt that too.

The rental copies are just a lot more expensive to buy than regular copies. One of the online rental places that started up recently here got in a dispute with the movie companies because they went down HMV and bought a load of copies of films that they couldn't get from the publisher directly or for a cheap a price.

I've an even better one. Find your local recycling plant. There's one quite close to where I live. It has a 10ft long book case stacked with stuff. You can take as much from/add as much to it as you want for free.

Ah unfortunately you are incorrect - at least regardong Dublin City Councils' Gilbert library on Pearse St

Its a great spot for free wifi, but I couldnt believe it when my lappy was barred from accessing boards :eek:

(Btw the Chartbusters outlets - in Donnybrook at least - also won't allow access from their €2 per 15 mins computers to either boards or refdesk.com - I just quit after 4 mins and wont stop there again.)

Yeah that's true, but there's some clause or other which means that in reality, it doesn't actually happen. I can't remember the details... something like they have a right to each book, but they don't actually physically own a copy.
