Get headphones, insert CD with your own music or listen to on-line radio.
    Problem solved without self-inflicted violence.

    I don't envy you OP.

I also listen to newstalk during the day on my headphones as its easier to listen to chat rather than crappy inoffensive music. That one from Gwen Stefani (with the "Oooh Oooh, Aaahh Aaahh" in it) makes me so angry! I'd rather burn my own ears off than have to listen to it once more!!!!!!!!! AAAAAaarrrgghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Honestly, have you asked them to change it? TodayFM is a great station, as is 2fm.

The thing that pisses me off about 98fm/spin1038/fm104/etc when im driving is the amount of ads, its like 3 crappy songs, then a nice 5 minutes of ads for your listening pleasure. Then another song or 2, then maybe 5 minutes of ads. They seriously play more minutes of ads in an hour than songs.

My solution: I found <another station>, which is obviously a pirate but there are no ads at all on. None! Ever! Hope yas like electro house ;)

Exact sweet, sweet revenge whenever that station is left on.

Let me explain. I work in an office, the radio is on playing 98fm all day every day. The station has the same playlist every single day. I can barely stand to listen to the disgustingly ****, middle of the road, neither hear nor there, pop bollax playlist once - nevermind every SINGLE day.

    Main offenders -

Mel C & Brian Adams - Baby when you're gone
Scissor Sisters - I dont feel like dancing
Gwen Stefani - whatever her new song is
Pussycat Dolls - Dontcha.. want to impale yourself on fence ?
    Take That - Patience
Mika - Why dont you like me ? (Whinging little BOLAX, nobody likes you cause youre a twat)
    Robbie Williams - Violence
The Feeling - I love it when you call
Beyonce - To the left (WHY TO THE LEFT?)

I dont want these songs in my life, never mind stuck in my head. It honestly is driving me insane and I think I may have to quit my job. Why is this music popular ? Why is it on every single radio station every single day. Who LIKES this music ?

    flossy flossy ? **** off.

    Headphones.

*Razorlight - whatever moany crap they have out now
    *Snow Patrol - see above
    *Kelis - Little Star
*Nelly Furtado - dunno the name of the song but its whatever one is out
*Gwen Stefani - Wouldnt it be sweet

I am so glad I've found this thread...you'd think something was wrong with yourself when you protest about the music at work! I had TodayFM for hours on end in my job last summer and it drove me demented. Same playlist, same natter, same ads, that 'regulated by the financial regulator' thing really gets my goat, and so forth. Tonee Fenton roysh, dear lord, he's the worst, the sound of his voice is bad enough and then it's just wall to wall chart and Beyonce music. Phantom FM isn't much better, nothing interesting much gets played. My biggest concern is for who this kind of music is actually aimed at...HOW DO THEY STICK IT, HOW?!? Clubs are also guilty of playing crap music, too much Beyonce, too much Pussycat dolls, and everyone goes nuts for it. Makes my ears want to have a prolapse, let alone bleed:mad: .
EDIT: that rubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyaaaaaaaahhhhhhhrubyrubyrubyruby song should be banned.

Ah we used to have the music piped into my old workplace. It was ultra crappy chart music so everyone was pissed off by it until one of the lads launched a plank of timber and knocked the speaker (also used for the intercom) off the wall. The company had to pay to fix it and the chap who came in to repair it said "well if I had to listen to that same ****e everyday I would have done the same". :)

We brought in our own radio from then on and they only used the speaker for intercom.

The thing is, I'm in an office with 16 people and they want to listen to that horseshíte. I'm the only one who finds it torturous.

Do what you were trained to do, what you were bred to do, what you were born to do. Turn-the-damn-thing-off! And quit your job. And smash the head of your boss... And of your colleagues... Then stab yourself with that pencil.

    Main offenders -

Mel C & Brian Adams - Baby when you're gone-Fantastic song and great video too. The part in the video where Mel C goes "So in lo-ove"(2.46) and does this sexy thing with her eyes elevates the tune to classic status.

Scissor Sisters - I dont feel like dancing: Decent tune, the fact you don't like this one makes Pighead think you're homophobic.

Gwen Stefani - whatever her new song is: Cracking tune, real summer feel to it and a voice like an angel. If Bob Marley released this you'd be elevating him to God Like Status

Pussycat Dolls - Dontcha.. want to impale yourself on fence ? : Absolute belter of a pop song. If this doesn't make you go out and throw shapes on the dancefloor I'm afraid you're dead.

Take That - Patience: Universally loved and widely agreed to be the best comeback since Rocky in that last film he made. Suggesting this is a pants song is churlish at best.

Mika - Why dont you like me ? (Whinging little BOLAX, nobody likes you cause youre a twat): You may have something here.

Robbie Williams - Violence: Great performer, Rudebox has been nominated for an ivor novello award. You trying to tell me you're a better judge than Ivor? My arse you are.

The Feeling - I love it when you call: Probably the best MOR band since Credence Clearwater. There is no better compliment I can pay to these guys.

Beyonce - To the left (WHY TO THE LEFT?): Maybe you should ask yourself this question, why not to the left? Great song and if Pighead were female again he'd be shouting this song from the rooftops. Fcuk all men is always a great message to be spreading.

To be honest you need to shove a pencil in the part of your brain that controls good taste. Its you that has the problem here not 98FM and until you're prepared to admit that you're gonna lead a very sad and unfulfilled life

If one were to leave an iPod or equivalent with one of those FM transmitters beside the radio, wouldn't it be possible to inflict your taste upon the rest? Or am I overestimating the awesome transmitting power of these devices.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 256 ✭✭stolenwine

I find spin 103.8 to be the most sickening. It's presented by these jock boys and girls who speak in pseudo american accents.

Whenever they have a caller on who hasn't got any plans to go out and get locked at the weekends they make them feel like a leper!

And they have an annoying ad about how they play more music than anybody else 10 hits in a row blah blah blah more than anyother station, better blah..... just play the f****** songs!

    Phantom is the best.

If theyre close enough to the radio they will indeed take over a station. Problem is alot of them have preset frequencys. I ahve one that lets you pick the station but its an in car thing

I tried listening to Phantom but it's full of boring generic rock. The only radio I would willingly listen to is LyricFM, and that's only if they've instrumental stuff on (I don't like opera) or the Adrian Kennedy Phone Show. I'd rather sit in silence than listen to anything else!

Ah I have it so good in work. Most of the guys have the same sort of musical taste as myself so its always one of our iPods on and different playlists. Tis bloody great!!

That's exactly the kind of people that came to mind when OP described his predicament.

OP just tell them you don't want the radio on. Better to be thought of as the office miseryguts than have to endure that ****e all day long.

I've had one job (7 years ago) where FM104 was the order of the day. Being the niave young punk I politely acquised to "do you mind if we turn on the radio?" pleasantries just to keep the peace. Moral of the story. Seven years on and the playlist of about 12 songs still haunts my nightmares from being played 8 times a day in repetition 5 days a week for 4 solid months. I will kill Samanta Mumba and Five if I ever run into them.

Get your work colleagues to turn off the radio before you are permanently scared. These peons you work with are genetically immune to this brand of aural rubbish but the long term effects on normal people can be devastating.

Had a similar problem when I started in this Job - Arrrteeeee One all bloody day.
I 'accidentally' dropped one radio into a sink full of water. Excellent - silence for a few weeks. Then the new one arrived. A couple of weeks later I changed the station to Phantom (the real one, not the new 98fm clone that they have now) and superglued the dial in place. The owner was not amused but couldnt prove it was me.

Radio #3 arrived some time later (I was gifted the superglued one. Cant think why) and I was given strict orders not to touch it. I eventually complained to the health and safety people and they had radios banned in the workplace. Cruel but effective.

I'm getting brilliant ideas here! I think this is the beginnings of an evil plot to destroy the radios in my office. I dont know how much much Tony Fenton I can take.

I can show you which small components to remove.
edit: Why don't you just listen to your lovely mp3 player, or pandora.

We should join forces. Im going to remove the insides of the radio and fill it with melted cheese. What a surprise they shall get.

I'm going to be killed for this,

but any chance your boss might buy a Muzak or similar (there's a company called Direct Audio in Dublin that do it too) subscription. some of the channels go for weeks without repeating. We had Direct Audio where I used to work and the music was great from it.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 10,984 ✭✭✭✭Lump

You could just change the radio station.....

No idea what that is ? Zero chance of it though! I'm only new here so dont want to be rocking the boat. Would stabbing myself in the eye be considered rocking the boat ?

Only if you work on a boat and you stabbed yourself really hard.
