Let me explain. I work in an office, the radio is on playing 98fm all day every day. The station has the same playlist every single day. I can barely stand to listen to the disgustingly ****, middle of the road, neither hear nor there, pop bollax playlist once - nevermind every SINGLE day.

    Main offenders -

Mel C & Brian Adams - Baby when you're gone
Scissor Sisters - I dont feel like dancing
Gwen Stefani - whatever her new song is
Pussycat Dolls - Dontcha.. want to impale yourself on fence ?
    Take That - Patience
Mika - Why dont you like me ? (Whinging little BOLAX, nobody likes you cause youre a twat)
    Robbie Williams - Violence
The Feeling - I love it when you call
Beyonce - To the left (WHY TO THE LEFT?)

I dont want these songs in my life, never mind stuck in my head. It honestly is driving me insane and I think I may have to quit my job. Why is this music popular ? Why is it on every single radio station every single day. Who LIKES this music ?

    flossy flossy ? **** off.

Surely stabbing yourself in the ears would be more likely to solve the problem?

  • Moderators, Society & Culture Moderators Posts: 16,698 Mod ✭✭✭✭Silverfish

    Yep, I hear you.

When we were all put in the same office while they were renovating ours, I listened to this all morning.

Then, after lunch, I would put on Phantom. Then, the following day, it would be terrible music again.

I almost went doolally. I breathed a sigh of relief when I got my own office back. ( well, no I didn't but that's a whole other story)

Any sort of pencil stabbing would solve the problem temporarily at least...

large pair of DJ-grade headphones does the job. in fact i'm thinking of selling the tuner in my stereo stack because the radio has gone so apalling nowadays.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,683 ✭✭✭✭Owen

Could be worse. I've Jerry Ryan on all morning. Then the rest of the tripe that passes for 2fm. I just wish they'd stop giving Akon airplay ... "Wanna jump up in my Lamborghini Gallardo" ... hey buddy, it's pronounced Guy-ar-do, you think you'd know that after spending so much money, eh?

Im at the end of my patience. Im waking up in the middle of the night with a cold sweat hearing 'flossy flossy' coming from under my bed.

I think I have the cerebral palsy. Thoughts ?

Why not stab the people who put on 98FM instead? Surely you've already suffered enough without adding to your pain?

    98fm is the debbil.
I especially hate the guy who reads the sports; what a smarmy bastage.

As for daytime playlists? Yeah it's geting worse every day across the airwaves...even phantom are starting to be that wee bit predictable of late.
Who likes this music? EVERYONE! Or so the radio stations think...they forgte that playing it ad nauseum multiple times a day, every day, every week tends to wear no matter how "great" the tune was to start with...

Your only option is to kill the person that controls the radio tuning dial. Or you could quit....I prefer the murderous option.

yeah, i had this way back when i worked in a civil service job for a bit. The answer?
headphones + mp3/discman + music of your choice.
then, go on a killing spree at the 98fm offices. two birds, one stone and all that.

suggest maybe they try the CD player or someone's computer?

MP3 player brings sanity. I honestly couldn't put up with 98FM all day, hell it's hard enough in work when my managers decide to play bland indie crap all day.

Change the station, then sellotape / glue the sh*t out of the tuning controls.
    Problem solved.

OP I understand your pain by the way, I work in a shop with 2fm played over speakers from 9 to 6. I would happily stab each member of Take That in the eyes if I had the chance.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 12,401 ✭✭✭✭Anti

Simple solution to this problem really. Headphones + www.di.fm = problem sorted.

Have it turned up as loud as you can. So all your pooftahish workmates can hear is

" UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE UNCE "

That'll learn the twatty bollax's for listening to that tripe.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,736 ✭✭✭OctavarIan

You think 98FM is bad? I had to listen to SPIN1038. I can't put into words how retarded and hypocritical that station is, the presenters have the IQ and funniness of a packet of crisps, and if you half that 98FM playlist the OP posted you get the SPIN1038 one.

"10 spin hits in a row, no ads"

Plugging yourselves between every song IS ADVERTISING, the dumb ****s

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,835 ✭✭✭unreggd

My shop [ a toy shop] hafta have it on cos they play our ads, and they always start talkin abt sex and porn at like 8, when the shop is packed with little kids

    mad loyk

And yeah, same ol same ol

Get onto HR, surely they must have a policy against hazards in the workplace.
:D Tell them that 98fm makes your ears bleed!

Me thinks an MP3 player is your best bet, failing that pop onto
http://pandora.com/ and listent to your own kinda music.

Edited to note I just spotted the "cant wear earphones"
What about ear-plugs? Failing that I'd be darn tempted to
rob the fuse ffrom the plug when next alone in the office.

Yeah I know the felling I gave up on all radio stations INCLUDING Phantom...it may be The Best in Irish Talent but its still sh1te. Only once an hour would you get a good tune (altough the chat show piece does be good at lunch hour)

I switched to Newstalk as music on all stations was infuriating me.

Although I heard the 'Assh*le' song by Denis Leary was played on 104 today. Kudos to them :D

What possible reason is there for not being allowed to use headphones in work?

If you in an office they can hardly be thinking of it as a saftey risk of you not hearing heavy machinery moving about the place and surely if everyone had headphones on then the background noise from the radio is not then going to be a problem if your answering the phone to customers or some such.

i think the same thing everyday i go to work. I work in a small section of an office with a howareya type and every mornin she tunes the radio into that muck. Shes out this avo thank **** so ive got moncrieff on
Im pretty sure they pipe 98fm into prison cells in guantanamo. You forgot to mention
Snowpatrol- eyes open (the new one)
The fray - how to save a life
    Take that - Shine
    All Beyonce songs
    EDIT
Nope ya didnt forget Beyonce that to the left song is ****in appallingly bad

It actually makes me nauseous listening to it.Whats worse is the ****in primates that listen to this dirt allday everyday and still hum along gormlessly like zombies
And then Marty Lyons comes along....

You could just break the radio ... problem solved. Poke many, many holes in the speaker cones with a pen or screw driver.

If the radio is replaced ... break it again... problem re-solved and you get some mindless vandalism fun.

As soon as questions are asked about the high incident of radio failures, just say it's a well known fact that radios left tuned to 98 FM can spontaneously self-destruct.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 18,239 ✭✭✭✭WindSock

That used to drive me bonkers. I used to temp in offices and I don't miss it, mainly because it contains the highest concentration of ladydrones that listen to that kind of shíte, then they go out to nightclubs and dance to the same crap all night while sipping their bacardi breezers.

I used to work directly under FM104 and they drowned out all other radio stations. I once counted them playing "Men in Black" 18 times in one nine hour working day. I left the job shortly after.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 81,220 ✭✭✭✭biko

Get headphones, insert CD with your own music or listen to on-line radio.
    Problem solved without self-inflicted violence.

    I don't envy you OP.

I also listen to newstalk during the day on my headphones as its easier to listen to chat rather than crappy inoffensive music. That one from Gwen Stefani (with the "Oooh Oooh, Aaahh Aaahh" in it) makes me so angry! I'd rather burn my own ears off than have to listen to it once more!!!!!!!!! AAAAAaarrrgghhhhhhhhhhhhh

Honestly, have you asked them to change it? TodayFM is a great station, as is 2fm.

The thing that pisses me off about 98fm/spin1038/fm104/etc when im driving is the amount of ads, its like 3 crappy songs, then a nice 5 minutes of ads for your listening pleasure. Then another song or 2, then maybe 5 minutes of ads. They seriously play more minutes of ads in an hour than songs.

My solution: I found <another station>, which is obviously a pirate but there are no ads at all on. None! Ever! Hope yas like electro house ;)

I posted a smiliar thread in the radio forum about Today FM, which is another culprit for predictable playlists  . I hear the following songs about 3 times a day

    *Mika - Grace Kelly
*Manic Street Preachers & yer one from the Cardigans
*Razorlight - whatever moany crap they have out now
    *Snow Patrol - see above
    *Kelis - Little Star
*Nelly Furtado - dunno the name of the song but its whatever one is out
*Gwen Stefani - Wouldnt it be sweet
    *Kaiser Chiefs - Ruburubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyruby

I am so glad I've found this thread...you'd think something was wrong with yourself when you protest about the music at work! I had TodayFM for hours on end in my job last summer and it drove me demented. Same playlist, same natter, same ads, that 'regulated by the financial regulator' thing really gets my goat, and so forth. Tonee Fenton roysh, dear lord, he's the worst, the sound of his voice is bad enough and then it's just wall to wall chart and Beyonce music. Phantom FM isn't much better, nothing interesting much gets played. My biggest concern is for who this kind of music is actually aimed at...HOW DO THEY STICK IT, HOW?!? Clubs are also guilty of playing crap music, too much Beyonce, too much Pussycat dolls, and everyone goes nuts for it. Makes my ears want to have a prolapse, let alone bleed:mad: .
EDIT: that rubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyrubyaaaaaaaahhhhhhhrubyrubyrubyruby song should be banned.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 36,634 ✭✭✭✭Ruu_Old

Ah we used to have the music piped into my old workplace. It was ultra crappy chart music so everyone was pissed off by it until one of the lads launched a plank of timber and knocked the speaker (also used for the intercom) off the wall. The company had to pay to fix it and the chap who came in to repair it said "well if I had to listen to that same ****e everyday I would have done the same". :)

We brought in our own radio from then on and they only used the speaker for intercom.

    Main offenders -

Mel C & Brian Adams - Baby when you're gone-Fantastic song and great video too. The part in the video where Mel C goes "So in lo-ove"(2.46) and does this sexy thing with her eyes elevates the tune to classic status.

Scissor Sisters - I dont feel like dancing: Decent tune, the fact you don't like this one makes Pighead think you're homophobic.

Gwen Stefani - whatever her new song is: Cracking tune, real summer feel to it and a voice like an angel. If Bob Marley released this you'd be elevating him to God Like Status

Pussycat Dolls - Dontcha.. want to impale yourself on fence ? : Absolute belter of a pop song. If this doesn't make you go out and throw shapes on the dancefloor I'm afraid you're dead.

Take That - Patience: Universally loved and widely agreed to be the best comeback since Rocky in that last film he made. Suggesting this is a pants song is churlish at best.

Mika - Why dont you like me ? (Whinging little BOLAX, nobody likes you cause youre a twat): You may have something here.

Robbie Williams - Violence: Great performer, Rudebox has been nominated for an ivor novello award. You trying to tell me you're a better judge than Ivor? My arse you are.

The Feeling - I love it when you call: Probably the best MOR band since Credence Clearwater. There is no better compliment I can pay to these guys.

Beyonce - To the left (WHY TO THE LEFT?): Maybe you should ask yourself this question, why not to the left? Great song and if Pighead were female again he'd be shouting this song from the rooftops. Fcuk all men is always a great message to be spreading.

To be honest you need to shove a pencil in the part of your brain that controls good taste. Its you that has the problem here not 98FM and until you're prepared to admit that you're gonna lead a very sad and unfulfilled life

If one were to leave an iPod or equivalent with one of those FM transmitters beside the radio, wouldn't it be possible to inflict your taste upon the rest? Or am I overestimating the awesome transmitting power of these devices.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 256 ✭✭stolenwine

I find spin 103.8 to be the most sickening. It's presented by these jock boys and girls who speak in pseudo american accents.

Whenever they have a caller on who hasn't got any plans to go out and get locked at the weekends they make them feel like a leper!

And they have an annoying ad about how they play more music than anybody else 10 hits in a row blah blah blah more than anyother station, better blah..... just play the f****** songs!

    Phantom is the best.

If theyre close enough to the radio they will indeed take over a station. Problem is alot of them have preset frequencys. I ahve one that lets you pick the station but its an in car thing

I tried listening to Phantom but it's full of boring generic rock. The only radio I would willingly listen to is LyricFM, and that's only if they've instrumental stuff on (I don't like opera) or the Adrian Kennedy Phone Show. I'd rather sit in silence than listen to anything else!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 8,326 ✭✭✭Zapp Brannigan

Ah I have it so good in work. Most of the guys have the same sort of musical taste as myself so its always one of our iPods on and different playlists. Tis bloody great!!
