I don't think the smoke can get over the fence tbh. I remember back to when the smoke got hold of Lockes leg in Season 1 (you could see a chain around Lockes leg) and also some of the sounds it makes (only sometimes). It sounds very mechanical. I am not 100% sure, but maybe the smoke is a cover to hide what it really is underneath.

We only heard the Dino effects when the smoke is at full power. This is the sounds we heard when 1) It killed the pilot 2) Killed Shannon in the dream 3) The last ep with Kate and Juliet.

Part of the smoke was looking at Eko, Part of the smoke was looking at John. It was not the full entity.

I reckon that the black cloud is only a cover. The entity or machine is based under ground. Thats is the reason the trees fall over. It does not knock them down it disturbs them from underneath. And that is the sound that we hear. Engines roaring and gears grinding.

Bingo, exactly mate. The smoke is not the actually entity, which is why it cannot go over the fence.

So why doesn't it go under the fence?

It is physically too big to move under the fence as it would be wider than one of the concrete polls. It would trip the fence and kill itself.

The only reason Kate/John/Sayid/Roussou got over the fence was because they were small enough to fit inbetween one of the polls.

Good episode. I enjoyed it very much but it wasn't fantastic. I would give it a 7/10.

I'm laughing though at the people in this thread..."it's a filler" "nothing happened" "BORING" "loike OMG when are they gonna answer questions" "lost is so stupid this episode is the last straw I'm not watching anymore""the only interesting bit was Locke at the start" etc. etc.

I think there is a lot of impatient people out there! ;) A lot happened in this episode so it is definitely not a filler, whether you liked the episode or not.

Anyway, I liked it but, surprisingly there are a lot of questions coming out of it. And I don't even mean "Where are the Others gone to?" and "What's with the black smoke?". I'm wondering those too but simple things like the whole Juliet situation. I wonder why they left her behind. I highly doubt that she's a mole. We know that she handcuffed herself to Kate but why didn't she go find Jack instead? Why was Jack left behind?

I was expecting a bit more emotion from Jack when he found Kate. Even after he knew she slept with Sawyer there was still something between them when he was helpting her escape on Alcatraz. Now, he doesn't even want to look at her. There's going to be some great soap tv drama going on with him and Kate now that Juliet is with them though. It won't be a love triangle anymore! I would imagine that Juliet and Kate will hook up, Kate will be jealous, Jack realises he loves Kate instead and ditches Juliet only to find that Kate now loves Sawyer! Brilliant!

As for the smoke monster, we don't learn much more about it only that the Others don't control it. But even that we don't know for certain. The fact that it doesn't like the fences reinforces the theorey that it is mechanical and that the smoke is just its cover (as the previous posters have been saying). I hope that mystery is solved by the end of season 3.

The Others - where have they gone? Can't be far because they are a main part of season 3. Perhaps they've gone back to Alcatraz or another camp but I'm wondering why they didn't kill Kate and Sayid. They (plus Jack and Locke) are the only ones that know about Othersville. They wouldn't have to move then. (But obviously the writers aren't going to kill off that many characters...especially seeing as they are origionals.

Oh and the flashbacks were good - not entirely relevent to the story and we didn't learn anything new but I've liked every Kate flashback there's been (apart from the one where she was gonna get married - found that boring)

On a completely different note, does anyone notice that a lot of the characters...look like each other? Do you think this is done on purpose? The obvious one is Juliet and Sarah (Jacks ex), and Ben even said this to Jack to try and manipulate him. But Kate and Juliet have a slight resemblance in some of the scenes - maybe it's just me though. Then there's Kate's husband who likes like Ethan. There's more that I can't really remember right now. Maybe I'm looking too much into it...

Well we know the fence makes people go pop - so what could the smoke be made out of for the fence to stop it dead in its tracks instead of making it go pop?

    pop pop ?

in order to decipher what "smokey" is you need to theorise on what the fence emits.
    For example is it sonic/electromagnetic.
    Physicists...?

    Both?

electromagnetic sounds best as Smokie does look like iron filings

Sonic Pulse. Atoms bashing the living daylights out of each other. Disturbing the inner workings of muticelled organisims.

hence the dude or dudedete that piloting the man-made Grabhoid brain hurts when he gets to close.

What's this smoke moster is underground business? That's new to me!
Something that looked very much like the smoke was in the pilot, if you have the episode in any form, play back the bit where the engine explodes (and the guy gets sucked in) in slow motion and tell me what you see, above the engine in particular...
I can post a gif if I can find it, or if anyone else has it...

    Edit: Found it!

you are correct sir, you can see a bit of black smoke flying in to the engine just before it explodes...very interesting, but doubtful they'll ever explain what it was doing blowing up a jet engine... prob just threw it in there to give the die hard geeks something to talk about and hype the show up

    those clever sob's

looks like iron filings but look at the facts presented.
In the episode with eko the smoke seemed to have small images of his memories.
Intimating that the they are small learning thingies. Nano technology?
Also considering the cracking noises that it makes it would intimate that it is perhaps its not cellular in the biological sense?
    Any thoughts?

Well seeing that gives me some hope... it tells me that they actually planned the "monster" to be some black smoke and didn't just think of it on a whim.

    Meh, worthy of a 7.

Couldn't say it was a fantastic episode, but at least the story should(Carefully choosing the word "Should", knowing Lost it may not) move on now into some new ground, with Juliet now joining the survivors.

Also, the smoke bit was a nice touch. At least that's not something the others aren't responsible for.

Yeah i think the monster was always going to be a big part of LOST from the beginning.

Offically discredited numerous times by all the writing staff! including Gregg Nations on the fuselage.
The gif is not a clear representation of the actual image. Appartently it was artefacting from the editing process, coincidentally a part came close to the engine. Maybe someone else can find a link to confrim this?

    Agreed,

As far as I remember, I have already looked at that ep more than once and I could never see anything.

That image is fake, BUT (again referring back to my 3 smoke-monsters theory) there is one of them can fly, the small-smoke/hurley bird... but it has appeared to be fairly harmless.

Maybe only a scout, OR it is not related at all.

Did you notice how smokey had what looked like 3 heads when he attacked the fence in this episode? Pretty cool.

I'd thought it looked like two, but I could be wrong!

I still think there is 3 of them:

1 - Badass, tree-uprooting, pilot + Eko killing evil smoke
2 - Neutral, "bright light" smoke that both Locke and Eko faced which didn't harm them
3 - "Hurley bird", small smoke that can change its appearance (Bird, other characters, small smoke cloud)

On a side note, why do you they were heading back to camp? I mean if the place is deserted surely they would want to stay in the houses besides the little huts!

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 446 ✭✭man1

on another note, I was wondering why jack, sayid, kate and juliet decided to go back to the beach (maybe has been discussed before?)??

Why dont they stay there (the others village) and send for the other losties to join them, it would surely be better than the beach where they are now with their makeshift tents, dharma baked beans, dodgy fish etc.

They would be in a village with comfy homes with heating and electricity, fridges, vegetable patches, cows ripe for milking and beef, book clubs, baseball etc etc and they would be protected from outsiders as juliet knows how to work the fence.

And if the others came back they could tell them to "eff off, this is our spot now", as we have seen they are not as powerful as we think (or are they?) and jack, sayid, sawyer and the rest of the losties with their guns would be a
    even match fot the others.

However I am still convinced that juliet was planted with the losties to infiltrate them, for what I dont know? I dont trust her!!

There are a few reasons for them heading back to the losties camp.

The main reason, is no matter how much we know it, the people still have hope of being rescued by a passing ship or boat or plane. The losties have a far better chance of been seen if they stay by the shore line. If they were to move inland then they would most likely never be found.

Another reason is fear and security. We know that by moving inland the losties would gain much, they would have running water, showers, beds, houses, electricity. However, they may fear the Others will return to the camp, after all we do not know if the Others are gone for good, or just temporarily.

There is also the fear of being watched by the Others, via the camera system. The losties do not know the layout of the Others camp, there my be tunnels underground giving the Others easy access to pick off the people they still want or are on their “list”. They could get away with taking Claire’s baby easier for example.

Then there is the smoke, not a lot of people in the losties camp have seen or heard the smoke. Only a select few have, and it has scared them. The voices heard in the jungle would also freak the losties out. So they feel safe where they are and have managed to live their for 3 months now with no major problems.

They would see no reason to risk it all now.

All that can be answered by just putting the security fence up.

No more smoke, no more Others.
