I didn't see anything about this recently, so I thought I'd post.
It makes for some unpleasant viewing, so approach with caution.

    <snip>
How the hell could anybody do this?

I dont know, it's bad enough being paid to kill them, but then there's people eating it... not good!:(

Well we see this and think of "flipper" or those images of dolphins being our smart friends. Whereas I bet those fishermen see them purely as a catch. Tell me if this was a video of fishermen hauling onland a bunch of swordfish (or any other large fish) would you be equally as outraged? I know I wouldn't. so thats how I think "people could do this", but like you I see dolphins and see friendly mammals not a potential dinner

that was so upsetting, bastards!! its bad enough what they are doing, but watching them wiggle like that with their necks slit open dying slowly. The could have at least given them a quick painless death... those japs are more animal than the Dolphins themselves!

Dolphins are highly intelligent animals, unlike swordfish

Cows are intelligent too but I still eat them.

That's horrible. It's worse than any whaling pictures I've seen. I really wish the Japanese would realise the horror that these practices cause for the rest of the world.

If there's people killing them, then it's a good thing that they're being eaten, rather than it just being for sport, or to make dolphin skin shoes or somethin......

I can't watch the clip. I just don't think I could stomach it. Lol at Dave's Dolphin skin shoe idea though.

It's no worse than what happens to sheep, cows and pigs.

the video is old and has being the rounds.

yes its sickening and is animal abuse but they dont have a better way of making a living as far as i can see and the japanese government cant afford to provide them with an alternate profession i dont think there is no reason for this video but shock value and attention seeking imo(not necessarily from the op)

saying the japanese are animals is reactionary ignorance. welcome to the real world it is no different to how most mass caught fish are killed (dolphins aremammals but i doubt the japanes fishermen know the difference) the only difference is the size of the animal being killed. cows are regularly bled to death to be fit for coshir consumption and no1 bats an eyelid.

dolphins are more inteligent. that does not mean they feel anymore or less pain than a swordfish does

i have no problem with them killing any type of animal in a humane and controlled way.

ye we get ur point. as in, regualr fish get gutted in front of us and we dont bat an eyelid, but if it were a dog or monkey, we;d probably vomit. some animals are clsoer to us tho.

In general, it's expected that "civilised" countries will make an attempt to catch and kill animals for food in a humane way. While this doesn't always happen, any infringements are generally treated with serious disdain or legal penalties. Japan though, despite being a "civilised" country is different, and there's a certain amount of medieval barbarism in the way they kill some of their animals for food. Such as the above.

A particular Japanese delicacy prides itself on the fact that the animal is drugged and mostly gutted, but served to the diner while still alive. This may be normal for them, but that doesn't make it right.

thats irrelevant and generally only a western opinion as people eat dog and monkey all over the world. an animal is an animal is an animal.....we are animals too we just happen to be top of the food chain most of the time.

i dont see how you can justify the opinion that because that animal is smart he deserves a painless death but because that one isnt you can do wat u wish weather it be for food or sport

by taking that viewpoint to an extreme you can justify killing a brain dead orphan in a brutal way just because he has no intelligence to speak off(an absolute extreme i know but its the same idea)

No animal should be treated any worse than is absolutely necessary

    ot

id love to know how they serve fish slices with a still beating heart........that is truly miracolous

Certainly not in the majority of civilised countries. Animals such as those above are killed quickly. While perhaps they may feel a bit of pain which is unfortunate, they aren't left to die like those dolphins. Plus, they're not dragged from their natural habitat (dolphins = water, livestock = land) to be killed.

    The two don't even compare.

It's a nervous response a la the chicken in the farmyard thing, which is most likely over-exaggerated urban myth. I remember a few years back (fishing background), filleting dogfish, funnily enough to feed to greyhounds, that were about three hours out of the water, and they wiggled on the block despite decapitation.

In Britland, they are common fare, as "Rock Salmon" IIRC.

What a fair and balanced commentary in that video.

Honestly, is it worse for people that it's a dolphin slowly suffocating there than a cod or haddock? Or is it a case that it's only cruel when it's a mammal involved?

more anti Japanese Pinko liberal shoite,

Japan is an old nation with ancient customs and it own way of doing things, did ye notice that no one in the video gave a sh1t about the Dolphins cept the rather fair and unbiased narator.

I'd be curious now to see what a pair of dolphin leather boots would be like.

Is it any different to the murder of cod or haddock? Or the murder of cows and sheep?

Dolphins are far cooler. I don't see many people queuing up and paying to swim with cod and sheep. But yeah it is a custom blah blah just like bullfights in spain and sadly I would admit that if I were in Japan and offered a peice, I would try it due to my must taste everything policy.

We keep talking about "civilised" countries killilng animals more humanely...yet in Islam meat should only be eaten if the animals throat has been slit while invoking the name of Allah. Very akin to the "uncivilised" practice with the dolphins. So are we now saying that Muslims are uncivilised people?

Don't get me wrong, I think it's horrible to see an animal die llike that, I really do. I wonder have you ever seen how borrle-nosed dolphins kill their prey and each other? It's gory, they use their noses as battering rams and they are quite often very bloody afterwards. These animals are highly intelligent, they can hunt in packs or individually and they are beautiful but they are animals at the end of the day...

Do the people viewing this as cruel ever eat tuna? Despite the so-called 'dolphin friendly' methods of tuna-fishing, many dolphins still die thanks to tuna-fleets. These dead dolphins are not even eaten by anyone, so their deaths are even more pointless.

Jesus, some of you people should go work on a farm (especially if you eat meat/fish)...animals die in all sorts of gruesome ways for our consumption.

Totally agree...so many people think that meat is just something that you buy in a shop. They haven't a clue about how animals are reared, slaughtered and bred.

    Typical PETA video.

No, it's not particularly nice watching animals be killed, but that's the reality of life.

If people actually knew how the meat they buy in the shop was produced then they'd either be vegetarians or videos like this wouldn't bother them so much.
