we can't be sure he does believe her. He could be waiting for his moment to question her, trying to work out as much as possible first. Its not like he'd mention to anyone he is sus of her - everyone else already is, and nobody discusses anything of any importance anyway.

Yeah very true, he is very smart and he was an uber torture, so he knows when people are lying to him. He may be just playing along with her for the moment gathering info before questioning her.

plus, she seems like a very tough person, and isn't stupid either. Also, the others have shown themselves to be resistent to torture before, and resolute in their defiance. If she is an other, Sayid might feel he would not get anything out of her (personally i think the Alex situation is an indication she is not an Other) By the same token, if she is not an other, and she has survived on her own for years, she would still have a mental and physical strength that Sayid may not want to test, at least not yet anyway. She has been a harmless enough person too (apart from thebaby stealing!) and since season 1, she hasn't done anything to the losties (in fact, she initially helped claire escape, she helped find the second hatch and she aided in the jack rescue attempt - all for her won reasons, but she did help), so why would he want to torture her anyway?

Everyone on the Island has secrets, Sayid has not set out to torture everyone to find them out either, not even Locke, despite his actions over the 80 or so days.

Well put. To be honest, as you mention the Others seem to be able to handle torture very well as we have seen on more than one occasion. Humans will all have a pain limit but after seeing what happened when Mikhail and Klugh were captured. Without even thinking Klugh gave the order to end her life and Mikhail was trying to end his own. I think this may have suprised Sayid.

Well having seen The Man from Tallahassee and the look on Rousseau's face when she saw Alex, I think it is fair enough to assume she's not an other... maybe she's been their Northern correspondent for the last 16 years? :D
But there has to be more to her character than what we've seen so far, she hasn't shown any flaws or weaknesses though!

Yes true, she does seem to act on what they call "gut instinct" and without really thinking about the situation too much.

I think it's more likely that Danielle and her crew (be they alive or dead) could have been the Dharma scientists.

Danielle isn't capable of been a scientist, unless her been completely dissy is a big ruse, but I don't think so. :D

Yes you do get the impression from her that she is not a scientist. But then again it could be the fact she has been stuck there for 16 years, and has lost the plot.

I was just thinking today, what sort of person would live alone on an island that wacky for 16 years. Would alternative solutions to life's problems not come to mind once or twice? I know if I was Rousseau that I would have joined my dead colleagues long ago, and I say that as an atheist with no belief in an afterlife. No place that weird is worth living on alone for 16 years, you'd lose hope after 16 months nevermind 16 years

Yeah you would for sure. I have thought about this also a few times and i am thinking, anyone in the situation must have something to love for. She may be living for the chance to actually meet her daughter or she may actually know alot more than she says she does. She may have had contact with the others many times. One must also think of how she has avoided the smoke for 16 years. She may have info on the smoke also :)
