Just wondering if someone would be able to clear this up for me. Was talkiin to a few mates about this one but still couldnt figure it out. Why do some women wear rings in their wedding finger when they arent engaged or married?

Talk about giving mixed signals. Is it just to keep fellas guessing?

Some sort of mental deficiency perhaps, or just lying?

I know a girl who is amazingly good looking, and she wears an engagement style ring when she is going out to stop guys coming onto her.

It works most of the time but some guys are persistent even when she's out with me or any of her other male friends.

I wear a ring on my wedding finger. It is there purely to keep the women at bay.

I wear two rings..they both only fit that second last finger. so i wear one on each hand. the fact that its on my wedding finger doesnt bother me. There's a guy i know and everytime i meet him,(every few weeks) he sees the ring on my wedding finger and says "oh, you got engaged"..ah, no..i didn't.

I just wear it because it fits....whats the big deal..?

Don't nuns wear them to signify them being 'married' to Jesus

Aside from that, I've mostly seen it done by women who feel they've been 'left on the shelf' and are particularly bitter about their singledom.

i do the same, it has nothing to do with engagement/marriage, just simply that its the only finger it fits!

I have a Boyfriend, so when I am out without him I sometimes do this. When a guy comes onto me in a really noisy bar or club, I just politely indicate my 'engagement ring', and they usually just bow out graciously.

Don't get me wrong, its not like the guys are flocking around me every-time I leave the house or anything, but I hang out with a lot of single girls, who would generally be on the pull.
So when they attract a group of lads, its just easier for me to make sure they know I'm not up for grabs by saying I'm well and truly spoken for.

On previous occasion's guys have come up to me and offered to buy me a drink, when I say, "Oh no, sorry, thanks, but I have a boyfriend", they have responded with "well is he here", and when I say "no", they'll come back with "well whats the problem then?".

I could never get over that level of arrogance, so wearing a false engagement ring just saves me the hassle of even having to have that kind of conversation.

I know people who wear rings on their left ring-finger to cut down on unwelcome advantages, and take them off when they are more in the mood for them.

It's also worth remembering that there are a lot more people in Ireland now from cultures where wedding-rings are worn on the right hand (Eastern Europe, Germany, parts of Spain, Dutch except for Dutch Roman Catholics, Jews, Orthodox Christians, and more).

It's not called your wedding finger, it's called your ring finger. That is, the finger(s) for rings.

I wear a claddagh ring on my second last finger on my left hand. Couldn't tell you if that's the finger for my wedding ring, my engagement ring, whatever, and I couldn't care less!

I don't even know what finger or hand the ring finger is...

Left hand. Second last finger. (next to your pinky)

    Oh ok thanks.
Well I hate wearing rings anyway, they annoy my fingers, so I guess if I ever have one it'll go around my neck...

Ha ha! Well, if you just want to go to a pub or club with friends, to drink, dance, and have fun with them, and discourage a bunch of strangers coming with their one-liners, it normally works. :D

The engagement ring goes on the wedding finger.

I believe the following answers would all be suitable!

    1) Your face.
    2) The bang of hooves off you.
    3) Yore Ma!!!!

Now then, girls can be just as bad as guys when it comes to that type of thing. It's not often that a night will go by in work when i won't get some kind of offer. And many of these girls have "wedding rings" on. ;)

:D Hadn't heard that one before, very good!

    My contribution would be:

The smell of neglect off ya! (as stolen from another Limerick person :) )

OP It isn't a mixed signal at all, if she makes it obvious that she is wearing a ring on her ring finger then its a clear signal that she doesn't want to be bothered. However, if she wears loads of rings and happens to have one on her ring finger then you may chance throwing a line at her.

actually some girls are just that stupid, and usually go home thinking theyre fat or something cause theyre only getting hit on by lecherous creeps. :D

No no no! The obvious comeback is "Yeah he's here, but he's workin' on the door tonight".

...but only in Ireland would this whole ring-conversation occur! I'm not going any further except to say that those who have seen Daire O'Broin's performance on the Jack Dee at the Apollo last year would have seen him basically sum up Irish single-womanhood in about 10 seconds flat. Hilarous and deadly-accurate.

most guys couldn't give a rats arse about wedding rings they're just looking for one nighter probably even enjoy it more if she was married or engaged.

works both ways, i cant tell you the number of girls who've hit on me that turn out to be married or engaged or living with someone. its put me right off clubing as i seem to be some kind of slut magnet. i am actually looking for a relationship its just a pity all the single ones seem to be insane :)

Proof there's hope for Irish men yet...

OT: I really don't see the problem with that, but I can understand why some girls would want to pretend they're taken for.

If you were handsome/ beautiful, you'd know too:D

Do most people actually notice this kind of stuff?

I can't say I've ever paid any attention to what people are wearing on their fingers.

is that not the finger the claddagh is traditionally worn on?
