Know the first line and a half and that's it.. not really bothered

(in fact, I probably would know more of the US one from it being on TV in shows/movies so much)

I don't know it. What I see as the main problem is that it's rubbish. Almost all national anthems are. You need something with a bit of umph. I like the Irish rugby song, Irelands Call. It's got a better tune, more rythme and doesn't drone on. They should try and translate it to Irish (although that'll probably lose a load of the people who sing it).

Irelands Call!!! Are you for real????
The only reason this tripe came into being was to appease our non-nationalist brethern who could not bring themselves to sing THE National Anthem. I cant see them swallowing your suggestion of translating it to irish - can you?

To quote the title of another thread on this board - Some people on here make me want to vomit out of my eyes.

Why would they want to sing a foreign national anthem? The rugby team are a heck of a lot more grown up than any republicans in my opinion.

in a way in front is right. to non nationalist or people from unionist background the amrain na bhfiann is foreign and it would be only right to have an anthem that represents them too in areas such as the national rugby team, ok the words are a small bit naff, it was composed by phil coulter after all. but either way its good that their is an anthem that all of ireland can tolerate .

but amhrain na bhfiann (crap sp) is the national anthem of the 26 counties, its a fine anthem.

ok its not a dynamic as the french, which is brilliant, but hey we are irish, renouned for our ballads and sad songs, would any be up for one of them "giddy up jiggy reels and jigs, kiss me quck im irish" kind of anthems? (que shane mcgowan and the pogues) anyway we all know at matches that fields of athenry and olé olé are the songs.

our anthem has dynamics when sang with feeling, i defy anyone who goes to croker, and when sang by a proper singer (like the 3 irish tenors sang when ireland irfu played scotland years ago) you dont feel some tingle down the spine. seo raibh canadh....... come on tipp/dublin/mayo etc(seo canadh amhrain na bhfiann)

anyway anyone rember 3 or so years ago during the golf world cup, padraig and paul standing for attention for the anthem, the gimps in the band play "ireland's call". the tv cameras caught the two lads laughing and looking very confussed. priceless stuff.

I know it. For years I was led to believe more or less everyone does, and I was honestly shocked to learn that most people had no idea what the words are (and even worse have no idea what it translates to). I do not consider myself a nationalistic type as such, nor am I one to insist we all know it, but surely people could take the effort to learn the anthem of their own country which sustains them, was fought for, and only recently had the opporuntity to sing its own songs so openly.

Honestly we could do with a new one.
    1

Come the day and come the hour
Come the power and the glory
    We have come to answer
    Our Country's call
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

    Chorus

    Ireland, Ireland,
    Together standing tall
    Shoulder to shoulder
    We'll answer Ireland's call

    2

From the mighty Glens of Antrim
From the rugged hills of Galway
    From the walls of Limerick
    And Dublin Bay
From the four proud provinces of Ireland

    (Chorus)

    3

    Hearts of steel
    And heads unbowing
    Vowing never to be broken
    We will fight, until
    We can fight no more
For the four proud provinces of Ireland

    (Chorus)

Oh I know it .. is it along the lines of:

"Mmmm mmm mmm ata faoi geal ag Eireann".

I knew it once, but honestly, when are you really going to need the national anthem?

    Ireland's Call?

    Roysh.

Yeah, I got slightly lost towards the end but they've the words in the programmes at croker or on the big screen. I sing it nonetheless.

We're the worst nation for mumbling our national anthem too. Honestly, if we mumble it at the English match in a couple of weeks, I'll have given up on us as a country...

Known it since i was 6, we did it in the cubs....

there is nothing like being able to go to Jamboree's overseas and having it to sing while marching.

You do know that it won't be the national anthem?

Why ever not? What's Croke Park got against The National Anthem?

Whenever Ireland played rugby in Landesdowne Road we got Ireland's Call as well as the National Anthem of the home team. I know they use Ireland's Call at away games in The Six Nations, for obvious reasons. So what's the story with no National Anthem at Croker?

Somehow I suspect that the playing of the real National Anthem was written into the deal by the GAA.
They can sing Ireland's Call as well if they want. It's a free country*.

    *May not be entirely accurate.

Wrong. For home rugby matches, we do both Amhran na bhFiann and that Phil Coulter ****e to please the nordies. I'd gladly accept if we mumbled the latter...

Hah, just remembering that at my Christmas party just gone, the last song the DJ played was... yes you've guessed it... Amhrán na BhFiann.

    I cringed :o

They used to play it at the end of the night in any niteclub I went to, not too long ago either. Up until I came to Dublin, actually. I hate niteclubs though, so I usually leave before the end and can't tell you if they play it anywhere here. It was tradition, and bloody funny to see everyone hammered, trying to stand up straight and salute. It's a respect thing, I guess.

Nah they don't play it in any nightclubs I've been to anyway (in Dublin).

I think there's been a thread on this subject before, but IMO, playing the national anthem in that context is tacky and cheapens it for those who consider it a patriotic symbol to sing it.

Seems to be a lot of people singing it just now at the match..

I do(yay) but i was at the munster final last year...
And i was shocked to hear the people around me mumbling " la la la la la" through the whole anthem!

    Discuss..........

    Those aren;t the actual words ...:confused::confused: ?

It was "taught" in primary school when I went there, which is why I couldn't even spell the title when I posted about it in a rugby thread a few minutes ago, let alone actually reciete it.

Everything I don't like is either woke or fascist - possibly both - pick one.

Yeah noticed that -the players sang the real National Anhem with a lot of feeling and some didn't bother with Ireland Call. As a Rugby song Irelands Call is fine - like singing The Fields of Athenry or whatever but to suggest it as a real National Anthem - give us a break!!

Yeah I know the National Anthem in Irish and English. Unfortunatley I am a really crap singer so I don't like to sing too loud at games!!! I suppose I should sing/crow anyway. Think its brilliant when done loud and fast like a march - some bands/singers do it really slowly which makes it seem boring which it isn't. I associate it with the beginning of great sporting occasions - and by the way the last line is -c'mon Oirrrland/Mayo/Kerry(insert County as appropriate......) If ye think our anthem is irrelevant to modern Ireland - have ye heard the words of God save our Queen?!

Just for the benefit of those who are running down the sentiments expressed in the Irish National Anthem here's the French one and an English translation. I chose the French one because for some reason people who can't speak French seem to find it inspiring. There are some amazing similarities.

    En Francais
    Allons enfants de la Patrie
Le jour de gloire est arrivé.
    Contre nous, de la tyrannie,
    L'étandard sanglant est levé,
    l'étandard sanglant est levé,
    Entendez-vous, dans la compagnes.
    Mugir ces farouches soldats
Ils viennent jusque dans nos bras
    Egorger vos fils,
    vos compagnes.

    Aux armes citoyens!
    Formez vos bataillons,
    Marchons, marchons!
    Qu'un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons.

    Amour sacré de la Patrie,
    Conduis, soutiens nos bras vengeurs,
    Liberté, liberté cherie,
    Combats avec tes defénseurs;
    Combats avec tes défenseurs.
    Sous drapeaux, que la victoire
    Acoure à tes mâles accents;
    Que tes ennemis expirants
Voient ton triomphe et notre gloire!

    Aux armes citoyens!
    Formez vos bataillons,
    Marchons, marchons!
    Qu'un sang impur
    Abreuve nos sillons.

    As Béarla
Let us go, children of the fatherland
Our day of Glory has arrived.
    Against us stands tyranny,
    The bloody flag is raised,
    The bloody flag is raised.
Do you hear in the countryside
The roar of these savage soldiers
They come right into our arms
To cut the throats of your sons,
    your country.

    To arms, citizens!
    Form up your battalions
Let us march, Let us march!
    That their impure blood
    Should water our fields

    Sacred love of the fatherland
Guide and support our vengeful arms.
    Liberty, beloved liberty,
    Fight with your defenders;
    Fight with your defenders.
Under our flags, so that victory
    Will rush to your manly strains;
    That your dying enemies
Should see your triumph and glory

    To arms, citizens!
    Form up your battalions
Let us march, Let us march!
    That their impure blood
    Should water our fields

    Catchy, isn't it, ?

I know the National Anthem. A lot of visits to matches, and the end of many Irish sing songs or parties gives plenty of opportunities to sing it.

I for one don't know any of it, and to be honest I have no inclination what so ever to learn it.
