So who out of you can say you know the Irish National Anthem and be honest!

I do(yay) but i was at the munster final last year...
And i was shocked to hear the people around me mumbling " la la la la la" through the whole anthem!

Not even my Dad knew it all(and he was in the Army) and I was shocked!

We bitch about reviving the Irish language but no one seems to know the anthem.

Or maybe its just where I live?????

maybe it should be taught in primary schools

    wasnt in my one anyway

    Where do we hear it?

Going back to Pigmans legendary post many years ago.

" irish people will Q for tickets to get in the other Q for the big event"

No matter what the big event is they will Q for it. But the point remians irish people are gob****es and the ones you see la la la laing it are the epitome of these people, they will say " i was there" tho.

I know the first verse, and some of last lines; one of the few things as gaelige that I learned in school that actually stayed with me (kind of)

    i agree.

i wasnt thought it in school- my big sister thought me it.

But at the final when i sang it out loud(while the la la la ing went on around me) my friends stared at me and afterwards said" Jazus ur fekn smart"

No im not-I just have enough respect for what the irish people fought for to learn the Anthem

I don't know it. What I see as the main problem is that it's rubbish. Almost all national anthems are. You need something with a bit of umph. I like the Irish rugby song, Irelands Call. It's got a better tune, more rythme and doesn't drone on. They should try and translate it to Irish (although that'll probably lose a load of the people who sing it).

If anyone here's heard the Brazilian anthem, it's brilliant. It sounds like something from an Opera but it's all perky and happy sounding (it's probably about death and suffering, but hey, it's in a foreign language so, meh).

I know it. I just sang it to myself there, then saw LB6's post, sang it again, and confirmed I knew it.

I was one of the lucky few who got to sing it on stage at the Chor Fhéile many years ago. I've known it perfectly ever since. And there was a time when I knew it in English too :). I actually really like the National Anthem.

And they knew how to get things done!

Maybe they should reinvent the anthem like they always reinvent films (like James Bond etc). Just take the basics of the old one and put a new tune to it. They could do it each year with a kind of Pop Idol type system!

    edit:
actually, here's a link to the Brazilian National Anthem. (If that doesn't work, it's in wikipedia)

Some odd spellings in there. For example, I'd say "faoi" instead of "fé".

I've never really had the opportunity or the drive to learn the anthem. My loyalty with sports teams is always mixed up because I'm officially English but have lived in Ireland for years. What's happened is I only know literally the first line of both the English and Irish anthem. I don't feel patriotic enough to learn the English one off my own bat and I've never been taught the Irish one and don't find the Irish language attractive enough (Attractive mind, not saying I don't like it for any other reason!) to go and learn it.

I will say I much prefer the Irish tune though. At least at Irish games the fans don't insist on singing the anthem again and again during the match...becomes pretty monotonous hearing them singing about an old lady over and over!

I just know the curfás, which I hold, is the limit of 90% of people's knowledge also. Most are even unaware that verses exist, and substitute "Charlie Haughey" for "Seo libh canadh".

I can never understand why the Irish teams in various sports don't learn it - and sing it as an exercise in pre-game bonding. If they really shouted it out with feeling, in total unison, it would give a huge boost of energy and psych them right up. Basic psychology.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 9,016 ✭✭✭mad m

Some have come from the land beyond the sea,

The anthem was written before Irish was standardised in the 1960s, so the "official" version contains a few non-standard words. I think most people would learn a standard-Irish version nowadays.

    IIRC, its:

Soldiers are we whose lives are pledged to Ireland
Some have come from a land beyond the wave
Sworn to be free, no more our ancient sire-land
Shall shelter the despot or the slave.
Tonight we man the bearna baoil
In Erin's cause, come woe or weal
'Mid cannon's roar and rifle's peal
    We'll chant a soldiers' song.

These are the original words of the song, by the way (the Irish version was a translation)

I learnt it at the Gaeltacht and am delighted I did. Everyone should know it from a young age. This mumbling that goes on annoys me because it's usually the self proclaimed 'patriots' who haven't a breeze. We should at least know our own anthem. The song itself is fantastic and really gets everyone pumped for a big game.

Someone mentioned 'Ireland's Call' as being a better song. Gimme a break. It's feckin awful.

Taught it in both Irish and English in school, am teaching my own kids it. Only sing it in Irish now.
Don't particularly "like" it as an anthem - think it doesn't reflect where we are now, but accept that it IS the anthem and will contiue singing it until /if it changes.
If there was a vote to change it, I'd like to change the wording though

I learned it in fourth year.... when I did learn it I realised, every Irish person should know it, regardless of wether you like it or not.

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 16,793 ✭✭✭✭Hagar

When I went to school in the Christian Brothers they used have their "own brand" stationery and the National Anthem was printed inside the back cover of every copybook. I don't know if they still do that.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 12,564 ✭✭✭✭whiskeyman

It was drilled into us in primary school. Thinking back, I think my teacher then was a bit or a 'Ra head.
Anyway, I'm glad I know it and will always stand and belt it out if I'm at Croker, or even watching an international match in the pub.
It always makes the hair on the back of my neck rise hearing it, and it's really a shame when you stand beside other who haven't a feckin clue. The only good thing us Irish seem to be good at about our heritage and culture is drinking!

Kinda off topic, I was in a pub on Camden st last year, and there were a group of folk from New Zealand at a table at the window. A passer-by (another Kiki) on the footpath recognised a few of the gang. They were probably a bit merry, but one of the gang inside the pub got up and started to do the Haka, with the bloke outside looking in doing it too! Everyone in the pub were amazed and it got a huge cheer! I wonder what it looked like from out in the street!:D
