Hi all! We have been experiencing an issue on site where threads have been missing the latest postings. The platform host Vanilla are working on this issue. A workaround that has been used by some is to navigate back from 1 to 10+ pages to re-sync the thread and this will then show the latest posts. Thanks, Mike.

Is there any good programs or sites that help configure my PC's BB connection to the optimum settings? I have this router, but just want to ensure it's running to its full potential. :D

The new wireless Netopia is a direct replacement for your old one. You can setup the old one on another extension (if needs must) but only one at a time can be in use.

Thanks for that. My original intention was to have a spare so no loss really. Cheers.

Set it up on the phoneline the same way as the old one.
Connect it to your pc with the yellow ethernet cable.
Open Internet Explorer. You should be greeted by a login page that contains the Eircom username and password.
Delete those and type in your BT user/pass and click connect. Make sure to put @btbb at the end of your username (username@btbb)
If you don't get the login page straight away, type http://192.168.1.254 in the address bar and click go.
Click connect and then enter your BT details. Thats it.

BTW, If you're asked for a password when you try to access the router, type admin for username and 1234 for password.

so does anyone know of a similar product that will work with NTL Broadband?

Any wireless router with a WAN socket (ethernet in) that doesn't have a DSL modem built in should work.

Which firmware is best to use? If you go direct to the Netopia site, it shows 7.6.1 R4 as the latest firmware.
But if you use the link within the admin pages of the router it shows 7.7.0 R3
I wonder if the 7.6.1 R4 gets rid of the eircom screens?

    Has anyone tried it yet?

I tried to update with the one linked in the admin page and it failed several times for some reason. The one on the Netopia site (7.6.1 R4) updated first time. And no, it doesn't remove the Eircom branding.

Ok I'll be ranting here for a while so please bear with me thanks :p

Ok so My pc has no Ethernet or wireless capabilities so I've got a hair brained scheme that I would like some help with.

I'm with bt and I use a zyxel router through the usb port. The main reasons I plan on buying the router are:
    1. For use when I get a new PC
    2. For connecting a psp, ds, wii or laptop to it
    3. Obviously because its a bargain ;)

My brother has a laptop so I was thinking could I install the zyxel router on it, then install the netopia on it using these instructions in the first posts.

My brother then would bring his laptop away leaving a configured netopia*** router for Ds/PSP and the remaining zyxel router just for my pc.

Would this work? thanks very much

P.s *** Would the netopia router function normally with just the power supply cable and the internet line plugged in? -aka-(would it need to be hooked up to the laptop to work?)

Ok, short answer, yes you could do that.

Yes, does not need a PC or Laptop connected full time.

Ethernet cards are cheap & easy to install, why not get one & just ditch the zyxel alltogether?

Thanks for your help. I dont know what an Ethernet card looks like. Could you possibly post a boxshot of one? Also would installing it require opening up the tower? Thanks very much.

I have a fair idea where it slots in but I dont understand how the ethernet cable will get to it after the tower is re-closed. Also are they as cheap in shops and I presume there will be different types so how do I know which to get?

    Once again thanks very much

The black rectangle on the chromed metal strip of the network card is the socket for the ethernet cable. This will be exposed at the back of your tower. (After you replace the blanking plate that's currently there.)

There a pretty standard item, PC World will probably be a bit more expensive but maybe not much after allowing for p&p. Try looking in the "Manager's Specials" you might find a cheap one there.

The blanking plate is usually held on by just 1 screw and than you slid it out.
When you boot windows for the first time after installing the new hardware, windows should detect the needed driver and install it automatically.

I'm a bit concerned at a few mentions of poor wireless range earlier in this thread...

Have we arrived at a decision on whether the wireless capabilities are worth using or not? ;)

Should I even be considering switching to use wireless in a house with solid concrete walls, wooden floors and the client PC downstairs and prolly 20 foot as the crow flies from the router?

Woud like to chuck the nasty cable away, but will wireless work well / all all?!

    TIA,

    Maz

PS Nice product by the way - works sweet and simple with BT.

  • Registered Users Posts: 6,182 ✭✭✭championc

My experience of these new Eircom Silver Netopia (2247 ??) routers is that the wireless range is much worse than that of the older 3347NWG. I had my laptop with 3 feet of it and only got 3 bars of signal on my XP laptop. The router is upstairs in the house but when downstairs I struggle to see it at all.

However, with the older 3347NWG, I can get 5 bars comfortably around the house and can see it from my neighbour across the road front door - and my router is in the back of the house !!!

the range is poor for me compared to my older motorola ap. but i am using cheapo wireless cards in the client pcs.

    wouldnt recommend it tbh.

    Righty Ho!

Pc World in Galway have another large batch of these in stock so the offer is back on. They were out of stock for a while.

Personally I find the range is OK , 30ft and a solid concrete wall , at least .

I have no problems with the range either. I can get a signal 50 feet away.

just wondering, we've eircom broadband, we've a netopia modem we got years ago, been using a belkin wireless router the last 2 years but availed of those netopia ones for €24.99.
trying to set it up, do i have to hook up the wires to the old netopia broadband modem or can i just follow the instructions that came with the new netopia router?
p.s. how do i set the wireless to private? is there a way of making your laptop pick up the signal and connecting automatically without having to enter the password or do you have to seeing as how its set to private.
    thanks.

you need a router too to convert the one NTL public address ( 82.100. ... ) to several private addresses ( 192.168.1. ... )

Can you put two ADSL routers back to back in the same way as you can with two modems ( tricky but possible ) - and have one open and use the other as router ??

NTL used to supply "Netgear wgr614 v6" 54mbswireless router.
they or their newer equivalent work anyways with no or little configuration-
just plug it into the ntl modem ethernet socket.

They have a non wireless usb/ethernet modem for 9.99. Don't bother with the 3G stores though. They'll only sell you either modem if you sign up for Eircom BB there and then.

Ha ha was in pc world in cork yesterday, you can now buy one of these routers for 9.99 but you have to sign up. I told him I was installing it in my sisters house and that she'd come back in to set up the account. He was reluctant but i told him my sister didn't have a clue so I'm installing it for her(nearly pissed myself cos my lie was so good).
basically I bought myself a nice shiny router for a tenner.:D

Is it the nameless Eircom boxes you pick up that says about the months free rental and free router etc etc? Are they all the same i.e. netopia wireless router?

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 2,192 ✭✭✭HungryJoey

PCW have now reduced the price to €9.99. But now the customer must sign up with eircom at time of the purchase of the router now. It is the silver netopia wireless router.

What details did they require before they would give you the €10 router ????

They ask for the phone number that broadband is going to be installed on, so they can test it. Not sure what else they want from ya. Just go into currys and chance your arm, say your just looking for what comes in the box, the worst they can say is no.

  • Registered Users, Registered Users 2 Posts: 3,927 ✭✭✭dubmick

I'd say you have to put an order in for broadband with Eircom. When they were €25 Harvey Norman were looking for me to put in an order, luckily PC World next door only checked to see if your line was capable of broadband (i.e. broaband test on eircom.ie)

No that is not the procedure now. They use to ask for a phone no. to test if your line was could recieve ADSL. Quite frankly, they didn't give a boll!x if your line was capable or not.

Now though the procedure has changed there for it is nessecary to fill in an order form before the purchase of the router. Its an Eircom Order form which contains personal details etc.. and they even may ask for proof of address. This was originally harvey norman's practice but now it is mandatory for PCW to do this.

Reason for changing procedure; too many people have purchased eircom routers without signing up to eircoms contract.
