Got the 007 box set from play today, no issue with that.
From experience, the shopping channel QVC charges customers with an Irish address the Irish VAT rates so things are more expensive. And that just comes from the UK :(.

Any company selling to Ireland from within the EU whose sales to Ireland are over €35K must register for VAT in Ireland and charge Irish VAT rates to Irish Customers. Amazon.co.uk already do this.

Arse! I just got a letter in the door today from Revenue telling me I owe them €17.59 in vat and post office fee for a copy of Saints Row.

The turnaround time is annoying me too. Play posted it on the 21st of November! and I only got the letter today telling me I owe them money for it.

another thing you can do is go to the customer services section of plays site and instead of requesting a replacement you can get a refund if you dont want to take the risk of the replacement getting stopped too.

by the way thought i'd give ya a laugh. ordered a book back in october and it turned up 3 days ago, roughly a month after i got the replacement :D play have lost a few things for me but this is the first time any of em have turned up !

so i was about to order an lcd from germany today

will I get stung for vat also - if I paid it in germany already ????

There should be a sticky about this..

If you buy something VAT paid in another EU country then you do not have any other vat liability.

If you buy something from an online retailer in another EU jurisdiction they may charge you the Irish VAT rate if they are over a threshold of sales with Irish customers. This can work to your advantage eg Irish VAT on books is 0% but German VAT is 7%.

I ordered an Xbox game for 22.49 euro and a couple of DVD's at 14.99 and 8.99 euro lastweek. They will all be posted out individually AFAIK. Will I owe VAT on any of these? I really want to get them before xmas!!

This would all be solved rather simply by implementing a localised version of their site.

Look at www.thomann.de, a large online music equipment retailer based in Germany.
You select your country upon entry, and all the prices shown are then at the base rate, plus the Irish VAT rate.
    Done and dusted, no issues.

The issue is, if Play did that, they'd have to pass on that VAT to the Irish Revenue, which they obviously don't want to do.

At the moment, the VAT element of a sale to an Irish customer isn't being passed on to anyone, so it goes straight into Play's pocket.
So, essentially the price for Irish customers is Ex. VAT, and it's just a matter of whether you get caught.

Irish customers are paying the same amount Ex. VAT as UK customers are Inc. VAT.

With that in mind, how are revenue the villians here?
Play deserve the complaints, it's not the governments fault.

Received Splinter Cell : Double Agent Limited Edition while ago from Play.
    Nothing to pay!

It did have a "Datatrack" sticker above the sticker with my address on, over the top of the Play.com logo. Maybe Play put this on, or maybe it was the revenue. Don't know.

What I do know is that there was no price declared on the envelope. I got Table Tennis last week. This was only €22.49, and this was declared on the envelope. Obviously just over the €22 threshold, but no biggie.
Maybe Play have copped onto what's happening, and with any order over €22, they're not declaring the price?

A bit misleading this quote as only stuff bought from amazon.com is subject to the taxation, amazon.co.uk which I presume most people here are buying from is within the EU and indeed registered for Irish VAT (although there is no VAT on books in any case.)

    Refresh ...

Is this still going on ?

I'm tempted by some of the Boxsets that Play.com have on sale, but will Mr. Revenue come calling ?

Several DVD box sets from Play in the €25 - €30 value have arrived no hassle recently.

Yesterday a box set from Play valued at €108 came. Delivered via Parcelforce. No VAT.

It doesnt matter how many boxsets it is, all that matters is the price of each item. I've nver been charged extra for a boxset from Play.com, even though a lot of them would be over the exemption limit.

Actually it does matter, if you check the actual laws on it they can add up all the packages values and charge on the lot, i.e. if a load of packages arrived the same day.

Never heard of it happening though, but it technically could.

    EDIT: talk of "consignments" here
    http://www.revenue.ie/index.htm?/leaflets/pn1179.htm
Where a consignment consists of two or more items of an aggregate value exceeding €45, relief will still be given for those items the total value of which does not exceed this amount. However, it is important to understand that the value of an individual item cannot be split up.

I'm open to correction on this as the revenue website doesnt define the term but a consignment is a single parcel or shipment. WHen they talk of "two or more items" they mean two or more items in a single parcel.

Pretty sure everything is judged on it's own, so separately packaged items are OK which is how Play post everything. If they are all in the one package then they would be valued together.

I think they mean 2 separate parcels.

In one package they are valued together. I will try and find it again but there was some wording I have read that makes me certain that they could technically get you for a lot of stuff delivered together from the same place. Some places sell stuff and tell you it will be sent on 2 day intervals so as to avoid the potential for this happening.

As I said though I doubt it would ever happen except in extreme cases.

Yeah its the same with 7dayshop.com:
VAT is not payable on this item as it is sent to you in a consignment of less than £18 in value.
    from the site

What I have noticed is Revenue have seemed to be leaving a good lot through since xmas, I recently bought CSI series 6 from Amazon.com and even though it took a bit longer to come through (I was sure I was going to be hit with a bill), the postie delivered no problems :) I'd say they might have targeted Nov/Dec and might have contracted out to some company to check all packages during the busiest time of the year.

    Snake ;)

Hey, didn't want to create a new thread so I'll just ask here.

Does Play.com ship to Ireland at all anymore?

Everytime I add an item be it a DVD or a Sony Memory Stick Pro Duo, it says "This item can only be delivered to a UK address."

Haven't ordered in a while from Play but there should be no issues with getting DVD's. However they do not ship any gadgets to non-UK addresses. Pain in the arse  because they do have some neat stuff.

It is classed as an electronic I think, they haven't shipped stuff like that in a while. It has to do with the WEEE regulations. Hopefully it will change in the coming months. It is unfortunate, especially with mobiles being so cheap and everything.

Yea, sucks electronics aren't shipped :/

Didn't want to open a new thread so I posted this here:

I placed an order with Play.com this afternoon with a 3V voucher. The Order status went from Processing to Packing at which point they took the payment out of my 3V voucher. But when I checked it there now, its back at the Processing stage. I clicked on View Details and I get a message about how they are processing the payment etc.. Now they haven't refunded the money they took before; so will I get a e-mail saying 'your card has being declined' or is it normal to go from Processing to Packing and back to Processing again?

  • Closed Accounts Posts: 29,466 ✭✭✭✭Our man in Havana

Nope. That is completly normal. It will go to shipped next. Not a thing to worry about. :)

Is this not the reason why Amazon will not send electronics to Ireland?
