Customs are stepping up their seizure of packages given the time of year.

A CD box set I ordered from an Amazon.com Marketplace seller based in the US got caught for €18 worth of duty and VAT.

The means of alerting me was unusual. I got a letter from Customs in Athlone stating that they had a package and could I email / fax them the invoice.
I did a screen dump of the Amazon order and mailed it to them.
They based their calculations on that and I had the package the next day.

I made two orders from send-it.com last Wednesday. One is for a boxset that is nearly 100 euro and the other is a few dvds bout 40 euro. Its still set as "processing", so is this due to all these laws and vat mess or are they just busy. Do you think Ill get stung? If so I might be able to still cancel it.

pack of scumbags. I've a couple of games coming from play and now there is a chance that the bargain I had thought I was getting will be no more.

F*** them for making you feel like your doing something wrong by buying overseas, making us hope we dont get 'caught'.

But you ARE doing something wrong as you ARE breaking the law.

There is already a thread for discussing import duty and VAT, it's a sticky at the top of the forum. The issue with Amazon and electronics is to do with WEEE, although they are being disingenuous by claiming it's WEEE.

Nody, there is nothing wrong or illegal about buying from overseas, either outside or within the EU, but orders over 22euro, that are sourced from outside of the EU, are subject to duty and VAT.

kendragon, they are not scumbags for enforcing the law and doing their job, VAT is one if the costs of living in the EU.

Amazon.com orders, which come from the US, are likely to be hit for duties at any time of year, not just Christmas.

Sendit and Play both send from Jersey, outside the EU, so also subject to duties.

Duty and VAT questions should be kept in the sticky thread.
