15 Y.O. Girl Hit With Baseball Bat Dies

A 15-year-old girl has died in Beaumont Hospital from injuries she received in an incident on the old Navan Road on 11 November.

Rebecca Kiely, from Castleknock in Dublin, was struck with a baseball bat during a row which broke out outside St Brigid's GAA Club.

Two men, both in their 40s, have appeared in Dublin District Court in connection with the incident.

An absolutely horrific incident. The family live just around the corner from me and she and her sister are pupils of my old school, Castleknock Community College. What I gather from speaking to people in the area is that a row broke out between two drunk men and a group of teenagers who were at the 'On The Run' store in the Esso on the Navan Road. One of the men swung a baseball bat, failed to hit his intended target and connected with the girl instead. She was in a critical condition all week but died tonight.

My deepest sympathies go out to the friends and family. It's a sad day for the community and hopefully the perpetrators will get their just reward.

I agree it's a terrible shame but it's all too easy to buy a baseball bat fom any sports shop in this country despite the fact that they are rarely if ever used for their intended purpose.

You can hardly blame baseball for things like this. At the end of the day its a stick. It could easily have been a golf club, hurley etc. People will use things that are to hand, if baseball bats werent available, people would use other implements such ast he above to attack others.

I'm not blaming baseball - I'm blaming the people who sell baseball bats in this country for a quick and easy profit when it's not a sport that even shows up as a blip on the radar in terms of participation. It's pretty obvious what most baseball bats are bought and sold for.

I think you're being silly. I played baseball in Ireland. More than I played Hurling. Rounders is always a popular game as well, doesn't always get played with a tennis racquet.

I can't believe you're arguing against the sale of baseball bats. Would you submit I need a bat license? Maybe prove membership of a baseball club? Anything else you disapprove of selling?

I'm not saying they should never be sold but maybe it would be prudent to distribute them through registered baseball clubs instead of selling them to any Joe Soap who walks in to lifestyle sports looking to buy a weapon. You can't deny that's what many of them are bought for in this country.

What does it matter? As the lad above said, if it's not baseball bats, it'll be hurleys. Or msybe they'll go to the autoparts store and get a tyre iron, if they're really looking for something to be used as a weapon. Heck, the big Maglite torches are often purchased because they make a pretty good club: It's why I selected my one.

If I want to play a game of baseball, or rounders, or whatever, between myself and a few friends in the park around the corner, why would I need to worry about being in a baseball club? I don't need to be in a football club to have a game of football, do I?

The fatal injuries were caused by the fall rather than the bat I heard. ie she was knocked over by the swinging bat but her head hit the corner of a low wall or a kerb or something. Can't even see the drunk being charged with manslaughter tbh.

Tragic nonetheless.

On the subject of baseball bats. I'll be getting 3 for home protection to be positioned around the house so I can definately agree with the comment that 99.9% of baseball bats bought in this country are not bought for playing baseball. On the other side of the coin I would say that of that 99.9%, 90% are probably bought as defensive home protection weapons rather than bought by skangers to go on the rampage beating the crap out of randomers.

Think an intruder would much prefer I defend my home from him with a couple of swings from a bat than by me coming at him with a carving knive I grabbed in the kitchen. As such I think that using a baseball bat as a home defense weapon is the least provocotive weapon to use.

Glad they are till sold legally because I simply don't think bats are the scumbags offensive weapon of choice and most bats purchased will never be used in anger and if they are probably only in defense.

The above tragic incident is the exception to the rule IMO

I haven't read any articles on it, but if it was the drunk that swung the bat at her and caused her to fall over and smack her head off the ground, then he would be done for manslaughter wouldn't he?

AFAIR There was an instance years back in england where a guy was done for murder when he punched some fella in the head who then fell and smacked his head off a kerb. I think it was during in riot between soccer hooligans and was on caught camera.

Calibos, its going to be pretty hard to use a baseball bat effectively in the confines of your house. Go for something you can hit repeatedly with. Frying pan Maybe ?

IMO if it comes down to it you're better off with something that you can justify owning for reasons other than battering intruders. Also dont go leaving baseball bats where the bad guy is gonna pick one up himself

Thats a real tragedy - I hope the assholes involved dont get away it it.
Unfortunatley though, in cases like this its hard to get a conviction as everybody will have their own version of what happened esp. if there was booze involved (just look at all the different versions of the one event in the past few pages).
